Amy mentioned that Penny taught her to drink when she is unhappy and I've noticed Penny has been drinking quite a bit lately. Does it have something to do with her emotional progression? Perhaps.

Yo back together with Leonard.

Is it just me or does Penny drink a LOT of booze on this show?

If you want to see Penny drinking heavily, go back to season four and early season five. Her consumption of alcohol has dropped dramatically since she got back together with Leonard.

I was pleased that she and Bernadette were drinking coffee just before Amy slammed her in the face with her coffee can of change in a bag.

The drinking depicted seems realistic. We don't see her drink every day  - because we don't see every one of her days.  It is probably not excessive now.

However because the show is in syndication we do see them drink almost every one of our days.

IRL It gets to be a trap, particularly when you start drinking wine when making dinner. IME. :icon_wink: .

Since Penny got back together with Leonard her drinking has dropped to occasional and casual. During season four and early season five they showed her passing out drunk like a hard core alcoholic.

Those were the bad old days.

Would Penny take Leonard's last name (if she weds -  she certainly is not rushing to that civil celebrant)? Or would she maintain her independence and remain Ms X. I was jokingly labeling the couple as the Hofstatders on another thread but I think now that might have been presumptuous.

I don't think it's too presumptuous. While she does have an independent streak, she hasn't mentioned anything about keeping or hyphenating her name when she gets married.  Of course, we have to wait for her to propose first, before we get to the name thing.   :icon_wink:

I think if they get married at the end of the show's run she will definitely take his name. But if they get married earlier, the writers may play with it. I would like to see the show run a couple seasons with them married and the last year them all being married. I think the last episode should be Penny having her and Leonard's smart beautiful baby girl.

I think there will be some Mr. And Mrs. Leonard Hofstatder lines, but Penny will still be no last name Penny. Also think the last show will tie back to the "our babies will be smart and beautiful" line from the first show. Pehaps L&P pushing a stroller with a couple of babies into the sunset.

My guess is when they do get married is when we'll learn Penny's last name. Do you Penny (X), take Leonard Hofstadter to be your... Wouldn't it be nice if that were the same day that Bernadette gets offed?!

Maybe Penny's last name isn't unrevealed like we think; maybe she just doesn't have a last name.  She's just Penny, like Cher or Madonna or Adele.  Then it would be cool if L/P got married and he took her non-last name and became just Leonard.  OK, I've officially gone silly from lack of sleep.  Time for me to step away from the keyboard.  :icon_rolleyes:

Harsh but LMAO

by escaped test monkees from a nearby lab (Mike or Peter?)  or dissolved by a mutant lab organism.

Though that would cruel the day for Penny, so maybe not.

What if they end the show in a completely opposite way with Penny & Leonard. Imagine Penny getting a HUGE role and her acting career hits off. She moves somewhere closer to sets & stays on location for months to film leaving Leonard ... because long distance won't work for them.

According to Wiki entry the people who wrote this show said in an interview.  They will give penny a last name before the show ends!

I am glad they toned down the drinking, seeing a character get hammered once in a blue moon can be funny, but seeing her get hammered every other week it seemed (I know that is a bit of an execration, but in season four and five she drank a lot), really isn’t funny and is kind of uncomfortable to watch.

People are correct the drinking has lessened since she got back with Lenard, but I would guess it also has connection that a new writing team has taken over <shrug>.

yep.

Steve Molaro has been given free reigns now that Bill Prady and Chuck Lorre are occupied with other Projects. Lorre was the worst corrupter of the Penny character according to reports as he wanted to remake her into his original conception, the crude, hard drinking, street tramp

In a Hollywood Reporter article, Lorre kidded Molaro as being a softie with the characters, protecting them from being emotionally hurt and making sure that character conflicts in the show don't last very long.

Molaro and the writing staff, with Prady, rebuilt the Penny character this season to make her more mature and a better partner for Leonard. The payoff in critiques and ratings has been spectacular.

Much has been made of Chuck Lorre's attitude about women and how it effects the representation of female characters in his sitcoms.

Nothing sums it up like this cynical, brilliant and revealing Vanity Card shown after the Valentine's day episode of the Big Bang Theory,

CHUCK LORRE PRODUCTIONS, #408

She had a fierce intelligence in her eyes which was not apparent in her
behavior or speech. When you looked into those sparkling, bluish-grey
orbs, you couldn't help get the impression that she had something clever
to say. She did not.

And when she favored you with a smile, you got the reassuring feeling
that she understood. She didn't. Not a clue. It was only much later you
realized that her wry, knowing grin was something she unconsciously did
when she was suppressing gas.

Oh, and her touch. The way she held your arm, or delicately draped a
hand on your shoulder. That simple gesture made you feel loved, made you
feel as if the two of you were connected on the most intimate level.
Well, turns out, that was just her way of keeping her balance while
wearing six inch stiletto heels.

And the worst part was you didn't care. The illusion was good enough. As
long as she didn't talk, fart or fall on her ass, you were a happy man.

She's certainly integral to the show. I can't imagine it without her. Just think of the amount of storylines that would have broken down without Penny in the show. I especially enjoyed the Sheldon/Penny/Leonard scenes in the first season, when they were just getting to know each other. I'm always pleased when she's talking to Sheldon/Raj/Leonard/Howard rather than Amy and Bernadette in these recent seasons.

Same here. When she's with Amy & Bernadette, it seems like they're switching between two entirely different shows... TBBT &  Ugly Betty or something like that, with the entire thing feeling like Friends.

Yup. You sort of have to take a step back and look at Penny as a whole as there were two different versions of her; normal Penny of S1-3 and FUBAR'D Penny of S4-S5. Penny's drinking and other problems, for the most part are the result of the writers efforts ( or lack of) to come up with ways to keep the L&P will they-won't they saga going in s4-5.

After the WW reoccurrence / L&P breakup, the writers threw Penny under the bus by giving her flaws that didn't really exist prior.  They repeatedly portraying Penny as more and more screwed up, and overtime morphed "normal" Penny into a self absorbed, bat crap crazy head case with a hardcore drinking problem.  Anyway, Fubar'd  Penny and the raj and penny hookup idea didn't go over very well, and generated enough negative feedback for the writers to spend much of this season unfubaring Penny.

Had Lorre or whoever remained on course, Penny would be worse.

.

I always look at these. This one disturbs me. I hope it's a writing exercise, not a manifesto, or show bible synopsis.
