  1. Good and great writers can milk the comedy out of anything. That quality is actually what separates the great writers from the rest of the pack. On the contrary, keeping things true to real life, at least when it comes to specific things like this often helps reign in the writer and keeps the script from meandering. This applies to both writing for comedy as it does drama. That wouldn't have required the writers to drop the politicing and competition storyline between the guys as that kind of stuff still happens(unfortunately)in the real world. Academia isn't an arena that is immune from such things. It just comes across as sheer laziness on the writers parts and a lot people notice it.
  2. Maybe in real life that would be the case but on this show....having Penny would most likely be the thing that would end up being revealed as tipping the scales in his favor. Keep in mind that this is also the same group of writers that despite having a consultant on the show who could have easily explained to them how the tenure process works and they could have written it into the show show realistically, didn't bother, so I don't think in TBBT's reality Penny's current occupation is going to hurt Leonard.
  3. What Johnny is talking about is that he doesn't want the Leonard/Penny relationship to just be smooth sailing from here on out but at the ultimate end of the show, he wants it to be clear that these two are forever. 10 seasons is the number that most of the cast is hoping the show lasts for and given that it's popular enough it could very well happen.
  4. I don't see what's so hard about the concept. Whether or not it's fair or rational, a lot people liked Penny better in the earlier seasons. Some of the changes and or additions to her character have not gone over well with fans. With Penny it sticks out more then the others because not only were the changes/additions stark compared to how she had been presented up until that point but they also seemingly happened overnight, which can also be jarring. The fact that even the creative team involved with the show were forced to take a step back, reevaluate her character and realized that they had to "fix" her or at least try should tell you something. As for the audience vs Leonard in this equation, it's a moot point. Leonard's character has pretty much always had and probably always will have an intrinsic bias towards Penny that the shows audience won't necessarily share. Besides, most audiences don't take their ques on how they should feel about a given character in any show based on how another character may feel regardless of how much that other characters hates or loves the character in question. This is because the audience is usually privy to more information about the character in general and on an instinctual level recognizes that the one character's biases is always in play. You may be right that Penny's character has been a victim of a show that had to find ways to extend or retool the storyline, but at the end of the day that's on the writers and it still hurt her character, moreso than any of the others.
  5. I'm taking about Penny, not the show as a whole.
  6. What happened was after season three when the ratings initially went through the roof and the creators/writers knew they were going to get more seasons out of the show. Chuck Lorre started to put more of his original vision for Penny's character back when she was Katie back into the character. The Penny we met in the pilot was not the character Lorre originally envisioned or wanted. He wanted the character to be much harder, like the character of Katie that can be seen in the unaired pilot that was rejected by the network. When the show really took off in season three ratings wise and Chuck knew that they were going to get more season. With season four he started sneaking his original vision back into Penny and having her behave much more roughly then we had in the past. Season four is also when we started seeing her drink more and when they really started to embellish on her sexual history and proclivity. Granted this didn't sit too well with the audience and they've been trying to fix her character a bit, but at this point some of damage is permanent I think. That trailer is pretty good. Leonard is using the most affective weapon available to him, Penny's sex appeal. Amazing what a good push up bra can accomplish.

Casting Bob Newhart is genius. I'm betting that his character is going to be inspired at least in part by Mr. Wizard. For those who don't know Mr. Wizards was a children's science program that first aired back in the 50's and then had a revival in the 80's. I watched it as a kid all the time. Here's a rather funny clip real put together.
  8. Considering that Johnny did the play Little Dog Laughed, where he had to be fully nude onstage, I'd say having to drop only his pants is going to be a piece of cake for him.
  9. This episode didn't really do much for me. I agree that both Mayim and Melissa looked really good as Snow White and Cinderella. I agree with those who thought Penny looked kinda trashy in her princess garb. I thought the taping report said that Penny was supposed to be Jasmine, not Aurora. A couple of things I've grown really tired of and I wish the writers would move on from already. 1.) The slutty Penny material. It just adds to the trashy image her character has been accused of being and only serves as a disservice to character. 2.) Leonard whining about his goddamn upbringing. Seriously GTF over it already. I thought Leonard's overzealous attempt at selling science to the young girls was cringe worthy. Kudos to Johnny for being the pro that he is and being able to deliver those lines. Just embarrassingly bad.

I would rather Leonard got tenure if only because he needs another storyline other than his romance with Penny.

    Penny

Don't forget that the syndication of the show brought on a considerable amount of new viewers to the program, probably more so than anything else they've done.

I would also side with those who think Johnny means more of what we've have seen with Leonard and Penny this year. With them having issues but working and resolving those issues. It's especially understandable this would appeal to him given that his character doesn't have much going on outside of the L/P relationship. Which IMO is a problem but that's an entirely separate issue.

I don't begrudge Briana her "opportunity" here because it's really not an opportunity, at least not in any significant way for her. Her sister is one of the MAIN stars in the number one comedy on television. Because of that she has access to people and "opportunities" on a regular basis that the majority of struggling actresses don't. For such a small role it won't effect her in any significant way precisely because she's Kaley's sister and has direct access to Chuck Lorre productions pretty much whenever she wants. The same cannot be said for an as yet unknown struggling actress. This isn't some new phenomena though, it's very common in the industry. But it is what it is.

Yeah and that part could have gone to a struggling unknown actress who needed both the money and the credit a lot more than she probably does and isn't as fortunate to have the personal connections to the production company.

Yep. She's playing the character of Gretchen. Gotta love nepotism.

It's sitcom writers who don't care all that much about continuity nor consistency from episode to episode.
  17. For all that owners high and mighty talk about not allowing for bashing of characters and other ships. The members of that community frequently bash Leonard, Amy, Leonard/Penny and Sheldon/Amy.
  18. But that was the entire point of the Boyfriend Complexity. It was supposed to be awkward because while Penny still has feelings for him she's actively trying to deceive her father. Penny as a character has always been more comfortable being "in the lead" when it comes to her relationship with Leonard. When you combine Leonard being bold here(having his fun as it were)along with the fraudulent nature of what they were doing, things are going to be uncomfortable for her.

You don't think the writers would pass up the opportunity to have Penny play opposite somebody the exact opposite of Leonard and have him become jealous over it did you? I'm putting the plot line for Street Car in a quote bubble below for anybody who's interested. What's interesting is that Penny's character shares some traits with Blanche DuBois, so I'm betting that's the character that Penny will be portraying.

Bottom line is sweeps is all about the money. It's when the networks are able to charge a premium price for advertising spots.
  21. The cast looked good all dressed up...except Kaley. She really needs to fire her make-up and hair people because she can be made up to look so much better than she is here and it's almost become a on running joke about just how garish she's going to look at any given event nowadays. As for the rest of it. I should think that fact that the show is the number one in ratings should be well good enough for people. That's the only rating the really matters.
  22. I've never thought that Leonard and Penny was just about sex, if that were the case I don't think they'd be together anymore nor would they constantly be pulled into each others orbit so to speak. I think both characters are drawn to one another at times for reasons that neither character completely understands only that there is a very strong need to be with that other person. On the other hand the writers do have a tendency to go a bit overboard with the cheap sex jokes when it comes to this pair so in a way they are(whether they realize it or not)giving life to the point of view that their relationship is based more on sex than it should be at times.
  23. You are also forgetting that cockroaches are one of the few things that have been shown to be able to survive a nuclear holocaust, which ultimately symbolizes longevity and survival. What this means for you is that the cockroaches are actually symbolic of the men you would best provide for you over a long period of time. Ergo giving you that "love of a lifetime"....seriously Jean, how DARE you spray those roaches...some people are so heartless.
  24. What's even more sad is that they are doing this all over a relationship that they were never promised to get in the first place.
