  1. Here is the primary thread for the 'location' of the apartment building: http://forum.the-big-bang-theory.com/thread-327-page-5.html As you have already surmised, the shot in the Google Earth scene is a composite.

  3. Just watched the season 5 finale. At the end they show the roof of the building and then pan up into space. I found that location on Google maps. The rooftop we actually see in not real. The building that is actually at that location has a different roof. Also, it's not on Los Robles, so whatever. The location that they start zooming out from is at the south west corner of Cordova and Madison Ave in Pasadena. Here's a Google Maps link: http://maps.google.com/maps?q=pasadena+city+college&ll=34.142145,-118.138309&spn=0.001881,0.002832&client=safari&oe=UTF-8&fb=1&gl=us&hq=pasadena+city+college&hnear=pasadena+city+college&cid=0,0,6769089712747176799&t=h&z=19 Another thing I noticed is that they actually spliced together different sections of Pasadena into a composite map that does not resemble reality at all. For example, there is a section that contains the Pasadena City College football field northwest of the location of the build. In reality that football field is east of that location. There is another section directly to the west of the building location that looks like part of the parking lots behind a group of restaurants on Lave Ave. Oh well. At least they were zooming up from Pasadena. I recognize the major highways you can see once they get to cloud level. Jim
  4. I think something dramatic/traumatic would need to happen to snap Raj out of his selective mutism. One idea I had was in the season finale the Russian spaceship blows up during launch presumably killing Howard. In everyone's grief and shock Raj speaks to Bernadette to offer his condolences and loses his mutism. However, he also experiences an internal struggle between grief at the loss of his friend and the realization that Bernadette is no longer 'taken' setting the stage for new kinds of awkwardness in season six. The writers would have to be really careful if they went down this path so they don't make Raj look like a heartless creep. Then somewhere in season six it is revealed that Howard panicked right before launch and fled the space capsule before it launched and is still alive in Russia but went into hiding because he was too ashamed at his cowardliness.
  5. In the mid-90s I wrote a description of digital cash for Tom Steinert-Threlkeld, Technology Writer for the Dallas Morning News at the time. I then posted it online to the old cypherpunks mailing list (Google it). It was picked up by a lot of people and cited in papers and university assignments and linked from a number of web sites. You can still find it online. Search either 'digital cash mini-FAQ' or 'e-money mini-FAQ'. I had to post a second version of the mini-FAQ using the term 'e-money' because the term 'digital cash' was trademarked. After posting the mini-FAQ I got an email from a tech book publisher asking me if I would write a book about digital money and I stupidly told them I was really busy at the time but could start it in about 6 months. I never heard back from them and in about 6 months there were at least 2 digital money books on the market from two different publishers. http://www.amazon.com/Presenting-Digital-Cash-Seth-Godin/dp/1575210622/ref=tag_dpp_lp_edpp_ttl_in http://www.amazon.com/Digital-Money-The-Internet-Commerce/dp/047114178X/ref=sr_1_1?s=books&ie=UTF8&qid=1336089991&sr=1-1 Waa! One of them could have been mine! Oh well.
  6. I'd like to see Howard's Mom take Leonard's Mom down a few pegs.
  7. The Cheesecake Factory in Old Town Pasadena would only be about a 10 minute drive from CalTech. They could easily go there for lunch every day if they wanted and not miss any significant amount of work. http://maps.google.com/maps?saddr=California+Institute+of+Tech,+East+California+Boulevard,+Pasadena,+CA&daddr=Cheesecake+Factory,+West+Colorado+Boulevard,+Pasadena,+CA&hl=en&ll=34.140154,-118.138132&spn=0.027528,0.038581&sll=34.141111,-118.133363&sspn=0.027527,0.038581&geocode=FabZCAId3or1-CEeyrGvykwwAA%3BFW0GCQIdVCr1-CE9O_opMJFqEg&oq=Chee&t=h&gl=us&mra=ls&z=15 Jim
  8. Thanks! BTW, I finally saw 'The Justice League Recombination' and at the very end when Sheldon as the Flash goes running out the building to the Grand Canyon you briefly see him running down a city street. That street is Raymond Ave. He is running north through the intersection of Raymond Ave and Colorado Blvd. This is a pretty good glimpse of the heart of Old Town Pasadena. Last summer I was renting an apartment just a block away from the clock tower you see at the end of the street. Of course, given where we think their apartment should be (corner of Los Robles and Union) there is no reason he should be running north on Raymond as it is a few blocks west of there. Oh yeah, and then just a moment later we see Sheldon as Flash running across a bridge with a sign saying Pasadena city limit. That bridge *is* in Pasadena. It is the somewhat famous (at least locally) Colorado Blvd bridge. Sheldon is actually running east back towards the Old Town Pasadena area, but that's ok. It's a nice looking shot. http://maps.google.com/maps?q=pasadena&ll=34.145042,-118.164906&spn=0.003761,0.005665&client=safari&oe=UTF-8&hnear=Pasadena,+Los+Angeles,+California&gl=us&t=h&z=18 Jim
  9. Here are actual salaries for positions at CalTech: http://www.glassdoor.com/Salary/Caltech-Salaries-E22139.htm There is a pretty wide range, but they could realistically be making over $60,000. Jim
  10. Looking closer at the page I linked to above I see it makes a big difference where you work as a physics researcher and if you are a full researcher or just an associate/assistent researcher.
  11. Good question! A quick Google search finds this page: http://www.glassdoor.com/Salaries/research-physicist-salary-SRCH_KO0,18.htm I think a conservative estimate for their salaries as research physicists just a couple years after getting their Phds would be in the 80-100k range. Maybe they have a lot of student loan debt. Jim
  12. Yeah. The real one is much more upscale than the one in the show. After working in Pasadena for almost 5 years I finally went and ate there the other day. Jim
  13. I just looked up apartment rents on Apartments.com in Pasadena. I used the following search criteria: 1 bed room Laundry facility Elevator. The least expensive one was $1509 and that was for an apartment barely in the Old Town area. Minimum wage in California is $8/hour which would be around $1280 per month if you worked full 40 hour work weeks. We don't know what Penny gets paid or how many hours she works, but I find it hard to believe a part-time waitress could afford to live in Old Town Pasadena area. It sounds like the writers have an opportunity here. They could introduce a plot that explains how she could afford to live where she lives. Jim
  14. Yes. By looking at the CalTech physics department staff office locations: http://www.pma.caltech.edu/GSR/facresearch.html and the campus map http://cit.s3.amazonaws.com/map/Caltech-map-20110428CO.pdf it looks like most of the physics offices are in buildings close to California Blvd. It's a good bet Sheldon would walk west on California Blvd to Los Robles, then north past Colorado Blvd to the intersection of Los Robles and Union St (which seems like most likely location for their building).
  15. How long does the walk take? To walk from my workplace to CalTech, walk around campus a bit, then walk back takes up my entire lunch hour. That's why I've only done it a few times. I would guess a walk from the corner of Union St and Los Robles to CalTech would take about 35 minutes depending on how fast you walk. I guess when I put it that way it doesn't seem *that* long. I typically walk for that long over lunch for exercise. I think I was remembering the enter 1-hour+ round trip.
