    Aliens!

@funbus I'm still trying to figure out if aliens visited us once, and were confused as angels! It does seem that humans have always believed that there are beings out there! Did visiting aliens get confused as gods? I think that last footage is interesting, but I'd definetly be more convinced if they weren't humanoid! One positive aspect of our search for extraterresrial life is the technology we develop. I heard a scientist say that the new generation of telescopes will have mirrors four times the size of present ones. And while governments have cut funding(blast those bankers and speculators), private donations like $25 million from Paul Allen(co founder of Microsoft, which hopefully also means any of us using their products), have helped. I've just been listening to an interesting discussion(part of radio3 Free Thinking), where they debate the impact of alien contact from a; theological, scientific, philosophical, ethical, viewpoint. They also mentioned such possibilities as nano probes travelling across the cosmos at close to light speed. It's an interesting area because like our imaginations, anything is possible as long as we are open minded! http://www.bbc.co.uk/programmes/b01nwdzm

    Aliens!

I saw a lighthearted Family Guy episode the othe day where Brian and Stewie visit alternate universes. One of the universes was set at the same time, but the civilization had progressed beyond all recognition. The reason; the religious lobby hadn't impeded scientific development. There's a ring of truth to this. If we don't believe that extraterresrial life is possible, we won't look for it. People won't be convinced it's worth spending the money, just to find more minerals! 'Truth is a matter of the imagination', 'The only thing that makes life possible is permanent, intolerable uncertainty: not knowing what comes next.'(Ursula K. Le Guin, The Left Hand of Darkness) Here's a link to the Planetary Society http://www.planetary.org/blogs/bruce-betts/20131003-our-improved-optical-search.html for those who still believe!
  4. If I could just control it, wouldn't need a jet pack!! Now that would be an impressive skill! Yes I've seen my 'cheeky' sense of humour stop potential bullies in their tracks. It's I suppose hard to hit someone and laugh simultaneously(well for some people!). My favourite date from the show would definetely be Leslie Winkle!
  5. I imagine that children get their prejudices from their parents, until they learn better. They do seem to draw a boundary around what they consider 'normal', and tease those outsiders. I don't remember this at school! I must have been considered a 'nerd'; physics and chemistry geek, ran chess team and spent all our free time playing chess, even captain of the fishing team, but I always got on with the beefy sporty kids, and cool kids as well! As for weight, I still have to force feed myself bars of dark chocalate(veal style!), just to stop from floating away! Life is tough, yes sure!!!!
  6. Okay lets get this out straight away. Just because the Americans do something doesn't mean you have to do it. Gardens are for playing badminton in! Kitchens are for cooking in! But now when I open my windows in the summer all I can smell is idiots burning chuncks of beef in their gardens, de-evolution or what!
  7. Not surprised!!! When I listen to that Elvis track, I find myself pulling a strange expression, and have a feeling in my stomach!!!! While we're on an Elvis tangent, this is one of my favourites(couldn't find live). This thread makes me laugh and smile, always a good thing!!! http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zsNMZsihErU
  8. I just think that Stuart is a great guy, but he lost alot of confidence, and his life seemed to go downhill, generally after dating Penny. As Bev H said Penny is just out there looking for the affirmation she thinks she never got from her father. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nRoxCqCd77E
  9. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=84XbjYS3XLc @A ThingOfBeauty, you've got TROUBLE written all over you!!! No literally!!!
  10. Listen to five times, and then destroy every copy in world!!!!! http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NIcW36J-h7Q
  11. AAAAAAHHHHHHH!!!!!!! That's the stuff, grown on the lowlands of Pasadena!!!!!
  12. I always thought Stuart was one of the best guys until Penny http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=z3Ef1WhfBzo
  13. Bye Lou Reed , RIP,... http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Uri6LLCZVjg
  14. @purrpurrpurr Yes thanks for the hilarious Young Ones clips, needed that!!! All we need now is some of Spaced Up's famous gifs(I imagined a scenario where some rogue shamys have gaffer taped her to a cinema seat, and are making her watch their favourite episodes, until she relents. But probably enjoying a good holiday!). You'll have to be Vyvyan, Count, as everyone tells me I'm like Rick(I even look like him!!!). I've come to the conclusion that artists don't need to produce anything, they just have to be themselves(ie: be a living art work!), keep our integrity and defy the world! I was thinking the remit for that video(retrospectively), would have been; remake TBBT as a Jane Austen sit com. Thanks for finding that, all great writers are even better researchers! Don't worry about those other threads, this is the only one where everyone has an IQ at least twice as high as their weight in kilos! http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HhSOldqndPQ
  15. Hey, has Spaced Up been kidnapped? We need more funny and heartwarming gifs to punctuate our verbal nonsense!!!
  16. This is a topic I'm also trying to research. I was wondering if it's sometimes, one of the traits of those with autism. I've just finished a book by a Japanese boy who was diagnosed as having 'autistic tendencies'. He attempts to answer all the questions that we outsiders ask. 'Q42;why do you memorize train timetables and calendars(I think by that he means, historical events and dates, etc). To which he replies; Numbers are fixed, unchanging things. You can easily understand all of them by following the same set of rules. We can memorize these as easily as if they were jumping straight into our heads'. I realise that people with 'autistic tendencies', even if they are only very mild as with Sheldon, are very talented at certain mental functioning, and just like people with dyslexia are adept at code breaking, people who's minds function differently could have special roles in society, where their 'tendencies' would be invaluable. Keep us informed of anything you find out.
  17. I reckon he's so light, he doesn't need to use his arms, just blow hard(stop it!) and hover!
  18. Thanks for clarifying( about use of 'protest'!). Irony and Pedant, are our middle names! What was that term I heard the other day,'semantic shift'. Glad I could squeeze it in appropriately!
  19. @ Count We had noticed your absence, but I just assumed your alter ego was invading Prussia, for the hell of it. That Shenny video says alot about obsession(what do they expect of TBBT fans) and brings to mind the quoteI enjoyed seeing a Brecht play. Ideas that he promotes, just shift our perception of reality slightly. After all the postmodern/deconstruction indoctrination I went through at UNI, I see all possibilities simultaneously, and nothing is fixed! Maybe you could give us some installments from your book(Dickens style)!
  20. I've always had problems buying clothes, they looked good in the shop! But I finally feel I know what suits me. It's usually black! I think people judge other people who wear black, but I just think it's a strong colour. I also like crows and jackdaws!
  21. 'An author's intentions, thoughts, milieux? These are common critical categories. In Derrida's view, none of them offers an assured foundation for interpretation, and they're premised on metaphysical oppositions'(Jeff Collins) I enjoy the films of Lars von Trier, particularly The Idiots,Dogville and Dancer in the Dark. But it's the concept behind The Five Obstructions, that interests me. The director challenges Jorgen Leth to remake his film The Perfect Human, five times. Each time, von Trier specifies an unusual method or guideline. The concept could be applied to any art work/film/programme!
  22. I'm still missing a few episodes from season 6. Where have you found the show online? I tried CBS page, but it just said, not available in your area! Looking forward to new season as well!!!!
  23. Just ordered complete Smiths boxset, plus Morrissey's Autobiography(everyone's talking about it!)http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_h-lN-ipAEI
  24. I never remember all the mythology around singers/bands. I think that's when I appreciated her, when she had some emotion, it's what takes it from a background song, and makes addictive(for two weeks at least!). I've heard of Damien Rice, but hasn't grabbed me. It must be hard for younger bands, having to compete with singers likehttp://www.youtube.com/watch?v=y-5c5o85SGo
