Weren't the group kind mean to "less intellectual" people

I think this was a good reflection of how people can be in reality, eapecially the underdogs and different charcaters. Even though it is fictional comedy.

However I am trying to understand the put downs they do to eachother and how they mock those who are acamedic or share their intellect.

Personally, I think they are more acquaintances than friends as they don't seem to understand the true meaning of friendship. They mock and tease each other,  but complain when they are teased and mocked.

Exactly when they are definitley not friends. It seems like they hang with each because of limited choice. Sort of like when people are grouped together because of lack of options. Kind of like the school nerds had no choice because no one else wanted to be their friends.

That's pretty insightful,  but  sadly true. Then again they think that they are excluding others from their group.

I think Sheldon genuinely excludes others because he doesn't know to be social, he seems socially ignorant. Raj is too shy and often seem culturally ignorant.

Could be true with Raj. But Sheldon, rather socially ignorant or not, doesn't care for anyone outside the group. He doesn't want to be social unless force on him by the Dean of Physics or the University President. If they force him, he'll do it,  kinda. But,  he want like it at all.

I seriously think that Sheldon does not want anymore "friends" as he insults everyone he comes in contact with. As for his current friends he only uses them as his "minions" to cater to his whims. I just wonder in the finale if he truly realized how much his friends actually do for him.

As for your last question, I think he's starting to understand what they do for him. The conversation with Amy was eye opening for him.

Sheldon has excellent friends, Sheldon and Penny are very patient with as are the rest of the group. 

For example, he constantly relies on his friend to take him to appointments and transport. But will critize them. 

I also think he has innocence to him but his character is very self involved.
