No, Sheldon is not a good friend. He's a condescending jerk who at times can be helpful. Personally I believe that Leonard tries to be a good friend. But, Sheldon, Raj,  Howard and at times Leonard are too caught up with being teasing, mocking and at times hurtful to be identified as good friends. Just my opinion.

I do agree that thr group are genuinely not kind friends but more so aquintences, I am currently rewatching s1-s3  starting understand why audience believe that was a good era of tbbt

But overall their digs at eachother is pure nastiness especially considering none of them above the other in awkardness even Penny.

Howard, Sheldon, Lenard sound shallow.

About being shallow, you seem to forget one of the most shallow, which was Raj.

Sheldon's arrogance and condesencion is manifested in many ways towards his so-called friends. Some instances are: the sweater incident with Leonard, the blackmail to Priya and Leonard just to get his way in the RA, the constant mocking of  Leonard about his job and references that his "friends" are there to cater to his every whim and take him whereever he needed to go without asking only assuming they will. But most of all his attitude towards Amy the woman he supposedly loves. These are not the images of a true friend.

Totally agree and so sad. Not to mention the terrible things he said about Penny as well.

well, yeah, he's selfish and self-absorbed but he can be a caring friend at times. If he were an inconsiderate jerk all the time, you'd wonder how the guy even has friends in the first place.

Yes he can be a caring and sensitive friend at times, which only shows to me that he knows exactly what he is doing.

I agree that he knows exactly what he is doing. Maybe the first few seasons he might have been a bit clueless. He blossomed into a full blown condescending jerk. How Leonard put up with Sheldon is beyond me. Maybe he stayed to be close to Penny. 😂

I can't remember the exact quote but he says to Leonard something along those lines  in season 8 " i know I can be difficult so thank you for putting up with me". So there's a level of self-awareness, he knows his behaviour can hurt his friends.

I think the sweater incident was absolutely one instance that showed he knew exactly what he was doing. He was lucky that Leonard didn't strangle him with the sweater.

Leonard was too stubborn and he got caught up in the craziness of the situation , he could have taken the sweater off but the episode did show quite a nasty side of Sheldon. A person  who can plot a revenge for years for something as trivial as a DVD rental isn't clueless plus he saw that his friend was in actual physical pain and could have stopped the whole thing. The silence at the end of the episode was quite telling I thought. Everybody was left wondering WTF

Yes I recall this  It is when Leonard and Sheldon go dress shopping with the girls and they sit waiting for them. However, another instance I recall where I believe Sheldon knows exactly what he is doing is when Raj and Sheldon are having a conversation and Sheldon asks Raj why he is jealous after seeing Emily with another guy. He then asks Sheldon wouldn't you be jealous if you saw Amy with another guy? Sheldon replied that Amy and him had an ironclad relationship agreement......slick huh?  (or words to this effect)

If I were Leonard I would have ended the friendship right there and move in with Penny

I agree about ending the friendship with Sheldon and moving in with Penny. That is if she is OK with it. If not move somewhere else. The main thing is to move!

As dysfunctional as it is , the Leonard/ Sheldon friendship is central to the show so it was never going to end. I really wish they had Leonard move in with Penny much sooner than they did on the show though. It got absolutely ridiculous.

There's one thing I'd like to know though is why Leonard would think he needs Sheldon ( like he said to Prof Proton). We never got the answer to that.

Also there's one thing i wish the writers remembered and it is that line from season 2 episode 23 ( Sheldon to Leonard " I can’t comment without violating our agreement that I don’t criticize your work." )  If there's one thing Sheldon respects it's his agreements, his whole life revolves around them, you'd think he'd be true to his word and not diss his friend's work all the time. There must have been one hell of a loophole in that agreement.

They do have a dysfunctional friendship and yes Leonard should have moved in with Penny, but what was even more ridiculous was why they stayed with him after they were married! Penny was the one that caved in to Sheldon's whining about being abandoned and alone. Even worse was they still stayed there after Sheldon and Amy reconciled. Just totally ridiculous

Them staying there was ridiculous. A married couple does not live with a  former roommate when a perfectly furnished apartment is empty across the hall. But they stayed for the comedy effect that the writers were looking for.

Sheldon's violation of his own conceived roommate agreement was numerous. It was his thing to criticize Leonard's work and his reputation as a scientist.

It's like Leonard set himself up to stay with someone who treated him like his mother did.

oh definitely. It's the type of behaviour he's known all his life and in a weird way i think it brings him some comfort. The human brain works mysteriously and Leonard is a bit messed up like that. In saying that , i believe he genuinely loves Sheldon and cares about him.

Well,  Sheldon is his longest lasting friend. Followed by Raj and Howard. Although some times I wonder if they are friends or just acquaintances. They like to mock and tease each other in my opinion.
