PeriodicTableShowerCurtain
Why were the writers so obsessed with these? Or are they routine in the USA?!
chucky
I don't know why the writers were obsessed (if that's the word) with colonoscopies. The only person that was really invested in them was Sheldon. I think Leonard mentioned them once in reference to Sheldon wanting to get one. As for the writers, maybe they thought it was funny. They are routine for elderly people. I, myself, have had a few. But then I'm 67.😊

Colonoscopies area normal for those that are over 40, here in the US. I've had one about every 5-7 years since I turned 40. They are a good way to check for colon cancer. However, I think this goes back to Chuck Lorre, who, in his thirties was a mostly out of work musician, trying to raise a family. He had intestinal problems, but couldn't afford a colonoscopy to check to see what was wrong. The only thing he could do was to go to a teaching hospital and get a colonoscopy, without anesthesia. They figured out what was wrong with him and it was treated. Although I think it left a mark on Chuck, (anesthesia free colonoscopies are not fun) hence all the colonoscopy jokes. As I said in an earlier post, I've had my share of colonoscopies as well.

I’ve decided that being old is just having to go through a lot of medical procedures.

PeriodicTableShowerCurtain
Gosh, this is a very thorough answer, thank you! I'm in Scotland so our medical care is NHS ie free at the point of delivery. I don't know of anyone who's ever had a colonoscopy (of those that would share such a fact with me). Maybe we all die of Haggis and Irn-Bru induced heart attacks before we get to the relevant age.

All my friends and their wives have had them numerous times thru the years, as we are all in our 60's. They are not painful and I enjoy seeing the inside of my colon.😂
