netmouse Posted April 23, 2011 Posted April 23, 2011 Anyone noticed any interesting changes the producers have made to some of the products featured throughout the series? The soft drink cans are probably the most noticeable. Coke is usually Diet Cola Dr Pepper is Dr Peeper Sprite has the logo modified 7-Up has the "up" word masked somewhat to show 7-Uo Mountain Dew, however, doesn't seem to get modified.. or am I not paying attention? On occasions the Dell logo on Penny's laptop is hidden. As too on Howard's laptop (hidden by bullet hole stickers) I do like that "Olive Garden" and "The Cheesecake Factory" do in fact exist. My sister deliberately ate at TCF on a recent trip to the US to see what it was like... she did enjoy the menu, but alas, no sign of Leonard and the boys nick
BBTfan Posted April 24, 2011 Posted April 24, 2011 I'm sure there is a money factor there. Pepsi is probably paying them for the Dew plug (and rightfully so since Dew is the go juice of gamers) where as all the others aren't. Blocking them out leaves them open for potential "plugging" revenue. Considering how many shows Lorre has done, I'm sure he knows how to milk it. netmouse Posted May 26, 2011 Posted May 26, 2011 I've found some more !! Acardi Rum SunkiRst Fanta remained unchanged as do Doritos chips. Interesting with regards to Fanta. Don't know if it's the same in USA (I'm sure it is) but here in Australia Coca-Cola produce Fanta, yet they change the Diet Coke logo on the cans in the show. Ok.. more re-runs to watch.... see what else I can find.
simonsayz Posted May 26, 2011 Posted May 26, 2011 speaking of mountain dew, the revenge part sheldon was demonstrating the foam revenge raj asked what is this, sheldon was like "mountain dew, ahh refreshing"
Kane Posted May 26, 2011 Posted May 26, 2011 The only one I've ever noticed is the Diet Cola, because Leanord always has it for Lunch. They don't seem to be as bothered with technology though, it's pretty obvious that Sheldon has an Alienware laptop and he had a Dell before it was stolen lol (or it's the other way around). netmouse Posted May 27, 2011 Posted May 27, 2011 With regards to the computers.. yeah they seem to let Alienware go, but on occasion Penny's Dell logo is covered up. There is also an ep where a lady in the canteen is using a OSHIBA laptop (the "T" is covered by a sticker) and Raj's Apple logo is occasionally covered by bullet hole stickers. Also when Sheldon and Penny go to the computer shop to purchase Leonard's b'day gift, they just don't care.... Alienware, Wii, XBOX... it's everywhere !! They also seem to like Anet's Guild Wars and Lineage2 game titles... there are a lot of posters from the games in both the comic shop and Howard's bedroom. Is there maybe some part of copyright law which allows them to say the names of the companies but prevents them from showing the logos or company trademarks? Because when they show the screens like when Sheldon blocked Penny's Wi-Fi, they remove the Windows and IE logos but they have mentioned the names before i.e. when Sheldon says Windows 7 is more user friendly and about installing Linux etc. It seems a little bit onconsistent lol. Trendkilla Posted May 28, 2011 Posted May 28, 2011 I think its a fine line of not breaking the illusion. A laptop is a laptop, everyone knows what it is, no need to give away free advertisment. On the other hand it would beak the illusion of being in a computer shop with no visible logos. I think its all about what benefits the show, what takes away from the illusion and where a plugin could make a buck.
netmouse Posted May 28, 2011 Posted May 28, 2011 I'm unsure about how the whole product name thing works with this show. The original thread just started as one of my OCD rants as I found it interesting that they went to the effort of changing certain products. I think it's kinda quirky

netmouse Posted June 2, 2011 Posted June 2, 2011 Saw a box of Devil Cremes on the loungeroom table in an episode... are these nice to eat? They're a type of brownie or cake, yeah?
netmouse Posted June 12, 2011 Posted June 12, 2011 Was reading the newspaper at work yesterday (don't tell my boss !!) and saw that Dell are stocking Alienware computers. I'm guessing this answers my question about why TBBT moved from Dell to A/Ware after the boys have their apartment robbed. Guess it's the natural progression. Not that I'm the biggest fan of Dell. Love their computers, just think you pay a little too much for them. However, A/Ware is an awesome breed. I was looking at a Dell A/Ware laptop similar to Sheldon's new one... it was only $3000.... ahhhh to have that kind of money to burn on a computer. Howard has an A/Ware stick pin too btw. It's the green alien head logo that you can also see in the background of the boys apartment... there is an A/Ware computer tower near the model Master Chief helmet from Halo. Sometimes the tower is on the table, sometimes it is on the floor. I REALLY need to get outside more ps... it actually takes just as much time to type "Alienware" as it does to type "A/Ware"
netmouse Posted June 15, 2011 Posted June 15, 2011 Noticed the other night whilst re-watching season 4, that Sheldon's new Alienware laptop (after the boys are robbed) doesn't have a numerical keyboard attached to it. Am I correct in thinking that a physicist would be doing a lot of "number crunching" and would find the addition of a numerical keyboard on his computer a bit of a necessity? I cannot recall whether his older laptop had one... looks like another excuse to re-watch seasons 1&2... yeah, I'm up for that challenge. BazingaGirl Posted June 15, 2011 Posted June 15, 2011 I guess he would do a lot of number crunching but you can have a laptop with a number pad built in which is what I have. It's a life-saver when you do a lot of accounting!
netmouse Posted July 1, 2011 Posted July 1, 2011 Found another little one, but I'm adding it to the list. The boys were drinking cans of "Monste" energy drink the other night. I must admit, the Monster import cans are well worth the extra 40cents over the locally canned stuff. God bless the Netherlands
Jacks Posted July 1, 2011 Posted July 1, 2011 Interesting stuff I have read in here, must watch more closely next time I pop in DVD I have seen a couple of Mist (?) cans on the lunch tables... Re Alienware laptop (Nice equipment btw! ) I think this should be Sheldon's new one
netmouse Posted July 2, 2011 Posted July 2, 2011 @Jacks: the Mist soft drink is Sierra Mist produced by Pepsi. I've never seen a can of the drink, so I don't know if they block out the "Sierra" word. On this link, the bottles have both Sierra and Mist written on them. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sierra_Mist
Oz Banger Posted July 4, 2011 Posted July 4, 2011 And there the Biji Water ! Anyone else noticed the use of bottled water in a number of episodes made to look like "Fiji" brand water but the F changed to a B. Noticed several - for example - one in the episode in series 4 when Priya arrives with Raj from the airport. While Priya & Leonard goes to the toilet Raj tells Howard to keep his hands off Priya. Sitting on the table in front of him is a bottle of Biji. Noticed it in a few others as well. Odd thing to do. If you are going to do positional adverts and get paid for it use the real thing. And if you are not why use something that looks very much like it ? Do they really need free advertising?
Peter Posted July 4, 2011 Posted July 4, 2011 I wonder with the new product placement laws if this will be rectified in the new season? Also could it have something to do with overseas rights? I mean do the US episodes have the official products in their episodes? Its just im a fan of a games series called Shenmue which was on the Sega Dreamcast years ago. In the Japanese version of the game, you could go up to a Coca Cola branded vending machine and buy a Coca Cola, or a Fanta etc. But in the US and European releases, Coca Cola was replaced with a fictional brand, with fictional branded flavours. Oh and another to add to the list is Youtube. In the episode "The Pants Alternative", Leonard says to Sheldon to "check Youtube", when Sheldon asks where his pants are. But when we see the actual clip, it looks like Youtube, and has all of its features, but there is no Logo, and the look is slightly off to what Youtube actually looks like. What confusing to me, is that Youtube in its own name an independent product. So how can it both be demonstrated and referenced, yet not actually allowed to be displayed. netmouse Posted July 5, 2011 Posted July 5, 2011 Someone posted right at the start of this thread about how certain things come under copyright whilst others don't. I like the "Where's Wally" approach and have made it a bit of a mission in life to find every possible name change. @Oz banger: I hadn't paid too much attention to the water bottles as I don't drink the stuff and wouldn't notice a name change unless it was really obvious. netmouse Posted July 7, 2011 Posted July 7, 2011 Noticed this one tonight... when Sheldon complains about Raj's tv having the bunch of damaged pixels, he refers to the movie "Harry Potter & The Philosopher's Stone" as "Harry Potter & The Sorcerer's Stone" Obviously JK Rowling wasn't going to allow the use of the franchise ?? You would think she would be glad of the publicity. Hmph.... muddles !!!

You would think she would be glad of the publicity. Hmph.... muddles !!! In America they released it as The Sorcerer's Stone because they thought that the average 9-12 Year Old American wouldn't understand the word Philosopher, if memory serves me correctly. netmouse Posted July 8, 2011 Posted July 8, 2011 Seriously ?? Omg, I never knew that, tnx Mark. I lol'd when they over dubbed the original Crocodile Dundee movie with US actors because they didn't think the Yanks would understand our Aussie accents. pfffff again.... "muddles" !!!
