rachelshamyfan Posted May 9, 2012 Posted May 9, 2012 My favorite "human" Sheldon moment was the scene with him and Penny sitting on the sofa, where he's coaching her through Age of Conan for the first time. He's sitting sideways, with a foot pulled up, leaning close over Penny's shoulder, and right as Leonard walks in the apartment, he's so into it that he's sporting a real, natural, full-on smile. It's about as non-robotic as I've ever seen him. __________________________________ The natural full on smile is something i noticed as well and it really does look like a genuine hello rather than "acted"

Guest I'm not dead Cheryl Posted May 22, 2012 Posted May 22, 2012 LOL it's kinda ironic. Viagra-like spam on a thread called "the truly human side of Sheldon". ROTFL
snow*flower Posted May 22, 2012 Posted May 22, 2012 Well, he is like a child in many ways. But Sheldon also likes to be the leader, but doesn't do a very good job as one. He's doesn't understand how to work as a group and he wants everything to go his way and rarely listens to others. Maybe he's more of a follower, but wants control. His ideas tend to fall apart pretty quickly which means there not exactly great but he has a creative mind. Sheldon is not like every other person whenever an idea strikes him. And there's this song that I used to listen to that basically reminds me of his attitude towards his creative life. Though, it's about a girl not a boy. Here's a link to the song. Edited: Everyone in the group (or maybe even outside the group) is like a parent to Sheldon, except for Amy. I think it's been clear she has a bigger role in his life than anyone else atm. In many ways, she's the one whose turned him into more of a man. Though with Leonard, I definitely see him as a father figure for Sheldon, more so than anyone else. Which allows me to see a pattern that often comes out of Sheldon and Leonard's relationship. He clearly manages to basically take care of Sheldon or has been giving him advice through the years, especially in TVF/TEA/TZS/TCVA/TEA/and a few others. And it usually begins with Sheldon having an idea and Leonard is the one who helps him along the way. But now I think about it, sometimes it's because he has to, not because he wants to. But I think we see them both turn to each other for support. Whenever Leonard and Sheldon struggles and goes through problems, they're often there for each other. If you think about it, Leonard wasn't always the father figure between the 2 of them. In the beginning Sheldon was in some sort of way the father figure. It was the event that established the foundation for Leonard staying as Sheldon's roommate which was brought out in the flashback scene in which Sheldon saved Leonard from blowing himself up in the elevator. SydNC Posted May 22, 2012 Posted May 22, 2012 Don't you think that Leonard is kind of an enabler to Sheldon though? He's the worst enabler. Penny is the one who stands up to him the most. Leonard let's Sheldon get away with WAAAAAAAAAAAAAY too much.
rickfromillinois Posted May 22, 2012 Posted May 22, 2012 Yes, Leonard has in many ways been an enabler to Sheldon, but at the same time if you compare the difference in how Sheldon acted in the first episode verses the latest, he has grown allot since Leonard moved in with him. Something to also remember, Leonard began as a roommate, not a friend, and he has plenty of his own baggage.
HeWolf Posted May 22, 2012 Posted May 22, 2012 Leonard is a 'take the path of least resistance' appeaser. He does it with Sheldon. He does it with Penny. He does it in all of his relationships.

According to the Friendship Rider in the Roommate Agreement, they also had to be friends (of course it isn't that simple though). But this shows also your point how Sheldon has grown. He had to make someone sign a contract to be obligated to act as a friend, maybe because he didn't know how to make his own friends. Eventually, Leonard did put his foot down and said screw the agreement, we're friends because we're friends, not because of the agreement. But I think we see them both turn to each other for support. Whenever Leonard and Sheldon struggles and goes through problems, they're often there for each other. That's very true, both about Amy and about Leonard. Amy is the only person who actually treats Sheldon as an equal; she respects him for his brilliance, but at times she refuses to take his crap and pushes him beyond his barriers - while the others mostly treat him like a problem child, getting irritated with him (or at best amused), rolling their eyes and ignoring his inappropriate comments. With Leonard, it's much more of a familial relationship - Leonard tolerates Sheldon's quirks, he doesn't really 'get' him on a personal level, but he cares about him, and they often end up sharing their problems. They really are 'surrogate family' to each other. Yes, I think this was another great example of Sheldon's progress into greater 'humanness'. He did seem to realize that he wanted Leonard's company, and not just because of the agreement. LOL it's kinda ironic. Viagra-like spam on a thread called "the truly human side of Sheldon". ROTFL LOL. :D
snow*flower Posted May 26, 2012 Posted May 26, 2012 But part of me also thinks Sheldon doesn't treat Leonard the way he should be treated. Leonard supports Sheldon in so many ways that I want to see him return the favor in a proper manner. Because what we've seen in TFS only makes me realize how much Sheldon doesn't appreciate Leonard. I would've accepted an ending where he just declares a day for Leonard but it was completely ruined when he added, "just give him a crummy card and you're good." Leonard deserves an episode with Sheldon showing he cares. Ya' know, since Sheldon's currently going through a phase where he's maturing, one part of this progression should be him doing a selfless act for Leonard that's as sweet as what he did for Wolowitz in TAI. That's true. But then, he's Sheldon, he's never going to effusively show that he cares - he doesn't even do that for Amy, yet. So one has to read his feelings from sometimes odd and backhanded demonstrations of them, like the very fact that he tried so hard to get Leonard back in TFC. Or his standing up to Speckerman in favor of Leonard. His comments were unintentionally insulting, but he was sincere in his desire to defend his friend. He even said 'I platonically love you, man', and he hasn't used the word 'love' for very many people in his life.
snow*flower Posted May 26, 2012 Posted May 26, 2012 Yeah, I think he kinda does care. And I also think the more Sheldon is being forced in these circumstances where has to be normal and is out of his comfort zone, the more he's able to change. Even though he's gone through this repeatedly in the past, he doesn't make much progress. So the only difference now that Amy's around is that he's actually making real progress. She's like the key for him to change. He's practically in a state where he's in-between who he is and what he'll probably become. The writers are able to pull off this whole transition very well because his attitude in these situations hasn't really changed. So while the past Sheldon wouldn't even hesitate to say sorry. The present Sheldon would do but it would take both him and Amy more effort to get it out him. And what makes the scene in TVS so much like him is that he doesn't apologize right a way. Sheldon is still is very much himself in moments like these, so it helps ease him through this.
rickfromillinois Posted May 26, 2012 Posted May 26, 2012 I have to wonder just what Sheldon would do if Leonard moved somewhere else. How would he get to work, the comic book store, the model train store, and myriad other places he likes going. IMO it is very unlikely that if Leonard wasn't there, Howard and Raj would come over. Sheldon would be desolate unless someone like Amy picked up the slack. If she failed to do so then Sheldon would need to buy himself some new bus riding pants because that would become his chief mode of transportation. Sheldon is still is very much himself in moments like these, so it helps ease him through this. Yes, the moments just before he had to say sorry - when he kept skirting the issue with 'I'm sorry my genius..' etc - were very much Sheldon in an active state of transition. He was clinging to the familiarity of his ego, but he also knew he had to do right by her and he wanted to, so he just about managed to push himself over the edge. I have to wonder just what Sheldon would do if Leonard moved somewhere else. This actually makes me curious about what favors towards himself are outlined in the relationship agreement. The roommate agreement is full of a list of jobs for Leonard, but then, Leonard is an enabler and it's relatively easy to take advantage of him. Amy has shown many times that she has it in her to stand up to Sheldon, so I somehow don't think she would tolerate much in the way of 'girlfriend duties'. Except those which she herself likes and approves of (and here it helps that they have so much in common).

MJistheBOMB Posted September 21, 2012 Posted September 21, 2012 Oh, there are many moments. I was just thinking about this to myself last night. As bratty as he is most of the time, he's such a sweet heart at the same time. *When he simply says, "thank you" to people in such a polite manner. *When he defended Leonard when Penny called them all pathetic for having the time machine, etc. *When he went to Wil Wheaton's party to "save his friendship" between he and his "little buddy". LOL. *When he cared for Amy after the girls went dress shopping without her. *He brings any friend who is upset a hot beverage. *While a bit under the influence of Tequila, he tells Leonard, "...thank you for asking...I love you so much." LOL! We can list things all night which prove why a man who is such a brat can continue to be loved by those around him. LOL.
