Sheldon's watches

From what I can tell, Sheldon Cooper has worn just 2 different watches on TBBT. Unfortunately, there have yet to be any really good close-up shots of them, enough to know for certain what brands/models they are. Does anyone know?

^ Well, no more geeky than a website devoted to any other collectible hobbies. Watches are very collectible, and there are some which have quite a bit of functionality (like altimeter, barometer, thermometer, compass, chronograph, and GPS) that people like to discuss. Yes, I did find that montage image there. I wouldn't go out of my way to own one of his watches, but I am curious to know which ones he owns. It does seem out of character for Sheldon to have analog watches. He is a major technology geek, so you'd figure he would have a digital Suunto X-Lander like Leonard, or something similar. But then... Sheldon does have some "unexpected" qualities surfacing from time to time. It may be the watches were gifts from his mother or sister, so they have a sentimental quality for him.

Plus an analog watch has a more "prestegious" air about it. Something I think Sheldon would appreciate.

That IS bold, because... you're dead wrong. Mechanical analog watches can sometimes achieve quartz watch accuracy (at very high expense), but only temporarily--they suffer far more deviation issues.

In the world of watches there are two display types: analog and digital. And there are two main movement types: mechanical and quartz. Sheldon's analog watches are most likely quartz, which are almost as accurate as digital watches (it's the physical movement of hands that detracts from accuracy). However, there are some models with atomic synchronization which can help keep a watch more accurate than the most expensive mechanical watch on Earth (the Tourbillon).

You're right that mechanical analog watches are generally considered more prestigious, because of the time honored tradition of conventional watch making. Creating an accurate quartz watch is a different kind of modern horology, which involves programming. It's an art, but not a well understood one by the general public. Also a good program is easily copied and thus the proliferation of really cheap digital watches creates a public perception that there's "not much behind them." So the big time analog watch makers don't market them nearly as much (although many of them have digital models in their product lines).

I see Sheldon being more about conventional superiority, rather than following a marketing image. Plus, a digital watch can have a lot of functionality to it that an analog would never have. Leonard's watch is a Suunto X-Lander, which provides not only time in multiple zones but has altimeter, barometer, and compass information. Perhaps Sheldon wouldn't want a watch like Leonard's, because he doesn't need that kind of information. Instead, I could see him wearing a Casio G-Shock with solar recharging and atomic synchronization. Something more like this:

Watches no long have Prestiges they once had.

^ hmmmm... but those cell phones have to have their time set off of a more traditional, mechanical source, yes ??

Plus, it's too hard to get the phone to wrap around your wrist.

I use my mobile phone as my alarm clock now and on occasion a watch when I can't be fagged putting one on.

As a switch technician I have brought 3 different switches for cell systems on line using Nortel DMS-250 switch systems. Although switches get their timing for data transfer from satellite GPS systems, that is not where they get the time that appears on your phone. On the last system I brought on line I set the time by using my watch.
