Hello,

I wanted to know your opinions on Amy as a character.

Personally, in her first appearance I thought she was okay, but I didn't think she would last long in the show.

Like Priya, I thought that Amy spoiled some of the episodes, such as when they featured a lot in the episode, there just wasn't a lot of laughter from me.

Thankfully, Priya isn't a main character anymore, and I am hoping Amy will get cut soon. I really think she is spoiling the show and I am a huge fan, so it would have to take a lot for me to not enjoy it. Watching 5.08 earlier, I was thinking about how much it was destroyed by her presence.

My best friend is a huge fan and he really doesn't like her at all.

Does anyone agree with me?

I love Amy and never want her to go. She is hilarious, superweird, with a touch of humanity in her scientific and awkward ways.

I don't understand why some people (as the OP) say she is "ruining the show", like, how exactly is she doing this?, what is she doing to destroy the show? she alone?

We must be objective, we may not like certain characters, and we are in our right to, but claims like those, without any kind of reasoning are just useless and come across as gratitiously hateful.

Why is it so difficult to accept her for some people?, doesn't she comply with some of the basics premises of the show?, isn't she a super intelligent socially challenged individual who wants to fit better in society?, she even have a kinda-crush in the hot girl too! :icon_mrgreen:

Or is it just because she is a woman?

I was just asking to see what other people thought. I don't really have to give reasoning to find out their opinions. If you want to know why I don't like her, then fine. I don't like her because I really don't find her funny at all. As an avid fan, I am used to laughing a lot throughout the episodes, and in the episodes she makes frequent appearances, I don't seem to laugh a lot. I understand her role as a character and the role she plays to the rest of the group with their relationships, but I find her annoying and unfunny.

Ok, then, as I said before, we all have the right to like or dislike any given character, maybe I find her funny just as much as you find her annoying, it's normal, happen in all shows. Sheldon could be the most famous and celebrated one, that doesn't mean I've never came across people who find him umbearable.

Just as you have a friend who neither like her, I have many friends who do love her, it's a matter of taste.

My point is, I don't understand how is she "destroying" the show? if that were true, and a great majority of people really couldn't stand her, then the show wouldn't be getting the numbers it's getting, not even mention the last episode would have never become the third most watched of its story, when all the publicity and promos clearly stated it revolved around her.

I'm not saying you are wrong for not liking her, it's your preference, and I understand you were only asking for opinions, I'm just saying that there are a lot of people out there that not only doesn't mind her addition, but that they may even actually like her.

I wouldn't say that's being "destroying a show".

Or is it just because she is a woman?

Sorry to hijack the thread but this caught my eye as I was skimming over. There's definitely a lot of funny women in showbiz. I think "Suits" is one show where they give the prominent female characters the better lines. Sarah Rafferty's zealous humour and Gina Torres' smooth wit was always a joy whenever they had screen time. You'd smile whenever the male cast quipped and joked, but with the women you really laughed. Kaley Cuoco in TBBT and Cobie Smulders and Alyson Hannigan in HIMYM also get equally good lines as the guys (apart from Barney and Sheldon), and there are thousands more examples.

To keep on topic, I like the idea of Amy but I don't like how she's a boring cardboard caricature of Sheldon. She's not exactly fresh, she was taken and developed from the grain of an existing character. She's also not very funny in general. I wouldn't mind it so much if she was a "sometimes" character like Stuart, only popping up here and there to serve her purpose then bowing out again.

That's ok, I wasn't asking that in a general sense, I was not implying that if someone doesn't like her was because there aren't funny women in tv shows. My point was that seemed like some people were less tolerant with her when she shows a lot of similarities with the things the nerdy guys of the show do. For instance, Howard says lots of jokes with a sexual innuendo and he gets always a pass, she does the same and she's called "annoying", Sheldon put someone down and he is darn funny, Amy does the same and she is being "incredibly arrogant", that's what I was trying to say, should have been clearer.

But wich one of the characters of the show is the epitome of originality? :icon_cheesygrin:

It's okay, as I said to the OP, it's a matter of taste, personally I think she is far, far away from being just a "cardboard caricature", but that's just my opinion.

I think it also depends on where people are in the series. Most people who have only started watching Season 4 would say Amy is a Sheldon clone, but by the end of Season 4, she's clearly her own character, and definitely after the start of Season 5.

For me, the similarities Sheldon and Amy share are that they are both highly intelligent, primarily look at things from a logical perspective, and are only starting to grasp social conventions. The differences would be in Amy's development of trying to be accepted by her peers, while Sheldon for the most part doesn't care at all. They were both isolated and made fun of in their childhoods, but Amy is the one who actually cares about having friends and admits to having sexual urges, needing human contact and discovering intimacy. I see her as the bridge that could get Sheldon to explore a bit of his emotions, and I do see that progression with the introduction of Amy. I know a lot of people don't want Sheldon to ever change, but I like the direction he's going as a character with his relationship with Amy. It's not out of character for him, and it's only human for people to evolve based on their interactions with other people. In an interview between Jim Parsons and Maiyim Bialik, Jim put it well when he said that he feels like Sheldon doesn't mind being part of Amy's experiments in the relationship paradigm they constructed. He obviously draws a line somewhere, but with anyone else, we've seen he would be adamant about say, touching anyone's hand, yet he would let Amy hold his. It's little things like that that set Amy and Sheldon apart.

Her lesbian schtcik and over neediness has reached it s apex.

The girly parts of the show...sorry I don't find funny.

I do not find women funny for the most part...and the ones I do, usually wind up being lesbian...Ellen DeGeneress and Paula Poundstone being 2 of the ones I found hilarious and they came out later on. Why is that? No idea, but I think what cause their sexual preference is also found in their sense of humor.

She is good for an asexual quip...but these women centric episodes are boring and catering to a demographic that drags down the show for ME and some others.

I agree with everything you say although it seems Sheldon may start to change after the next episode (Spitoon).

I much prefered Amy at her beginning when she had some excellent sarcastic lines. It would be great if they brought in somebody else to continue where she left off in that regard

.. or it's nadir?

I agree.

As soon as they stopped with the Raj homosexual implications , then they start with Amy fancying Penny. I hated the Raj jokes and now these annoying Amy jokes. What is it with these writers? Are they all gay or what?

It wasn't funny with Raj and now it's not funny with Amy.

As I said before about Raj... if he is gay then let him come out...same applies to Amy

While I used to not mind Amy in small doses I'm not crazy about her. I actually find her annoying sometimes whereas Sheldon is always great.

What bothers me about Amy is that the show seems to be trying to make it like she and Sheldon are a couple but that's just strange to me. It would be like he was dating himself (only less funny). Their friendship I understand...but as a couple? No way.

If Sheldon gets a girlfriend I picture him with someone very different. Like an artist type. Someone that would baffle him and challenge him because she's so different. He knows sciences, not the arts and while I do picture him with someone smart, I think it's weird that he end up with someone who is like Amy. He needs someone to compliment him....like the way Penny complimented Leonard. It worked and it wasn't weird.

While I think Mayim Bialik is a good actress I just feel her character is in the show too much. I find myself getting bored with her. I do however still love Penny and I love Bernadette and how those two never leave. Amy can go.

I was skimming this thread and had to join to give my two cents...

AMY NEEDS TO GO!!!!!

She is not funny at all, and is (like others have said) a failed attempt to re-create Sheldon. I find that when the show cuts to scenes with Amy, I am disinterested and just waiting for the scene to be over. Her character just feels totally forced, and they are really trying to feature her over the other characters (that are the reason the show became so popular in the first place!).

Look at Seinfeld - the reason IMO that show was so successful was because it had 4 central characters and were only supported occasionally (e.g. Newman, Uncle Leo, etc.). Those characters were great because you saw just enough of them for a few laughs before the plot returned to the 4 central characters.

Big Bang Theory needs to take a hint from Seinfeld and go back to the way this show was in Seasons 1-3.

Amy did start out as a Sheldon clone for the close of one episode. It was a hit, so they brought her back. Since then she has developed into her own character. On the surface she is much like Sheldon but I think the characters arrive at that similarity from completely different routes. Sheldon is the way he is because he shuns social connections. He trivializes friendship unless it is central to his needs. He is in many ways mildly autistic and certainly OCD. Amy is the way she is because she has always been shunned by society. She built up masks and social camouflage to hide her pain.

Sheldon likes being isolated. Amy craves the friends she never had. They are attracted to each other because of what they are, even though the causes are different. They suit each other because neither can find an intellectual high ground. Amy will bring humanity to Sheldon because she can. He can't resist her because he can't feel superior to her.

I don't think Amy is a lesbian. I think she loves Penny because Penny befriended her and gave her a social position she never let herself believe she could have. She also loves Penny because Penny IS the girl Amy would have rather been. Sheldon would never trade his brains for anything but I think Amy would give up the smarts in a second to be Penny.

However, there remains the question of whether this should be the course taken with the show. It seems that relationships are the core plotline for the current writers. They have obviously decided that is the correct way to go. It remains to be seen how it all progresses.

the big bang theory was funny with just the 4 guys... now how the show revolves around amy's feelings is just stupid

Amy was introduced on the season finale of s3 she was thought of as Sheldon's clone at first and was not accepted with open arms. She developed into 'a unique young woman' as Sheldon's mother Mary (Laurie Metcalf) would say but it did take some time to establish her existence as fans we were not sure if this was a good addition (well I will discount myself as I liked Amy from the start) and there was a lot of lashing out and back and forth against this character. I couldn't understand why Bernadette was so welcomed but Amy was bashed? I couldn't understand why they didn't like the thought of Sheldon having a love interest or relationship with said Amy? Many took a long time warming up to Mayim's character but she seems to get better and more popular with every episode.

As it stands right now I think Sheldon and Amy's chemistry and story-lines are the best of the series. I misunderstand some of the reasons for liking this relationship with other fans. I see many like it to remain just a friendship NOT a romantic relationship. But why? I have conflicts too however I am more aimed at the romance side. I feel that maybe Sheldon would gain more respect from the guys and he wouldn't be so 'left out' if he did experience as they like to phrase it 'coitus.' Not that I think that completes or consummates a relationship but maybe his 'ruts' would lessen. I don't understand why people want to see the same thing for a character and not allow them to evolve? I don't understand the problem with him evolving and joining the real world. He can't be stuck in this non reality forever. I really don't think the writers would make the same mistakes as Friends with Ross/Rachel or any of the 'common' sitcoms as many fear. I think they will still have their little dramas but only temporary messes and they would be minimal compared to the norms. But with all the clues they have been throwing in episodes as of late, the fact that Amy seems to be falling for him every single episode, its bound to happen. Why are people thinking the show would jump shark if this happened for Sheldon? He could still experience coitus and still be the same pigheaded, stubborn little pain in the ass we all know and love. But its inevitable it's going to happen eventually. I would like it if they take this slowly and not just have them jump into the sack with each other but talking about it and thinking about it doesn't hurt anyone. It's doubtful and unlikely that these two would find anyone better. They are in some ways soul-mates and work so well together. They have similar interests and traits and they have different ways of expressing their like or love for each other. Opposites attract as differences find interest. I speak this way as a SHAMY shipper so forgive my bias opinion on that.

Lastly, people can't live on 's2' forever. It probably will never be the same since it has a different flavor and more characters to distribute airtime for. If bbt became an hour long we might have a better show but only so much time for each character and plot. I wouldn't use 's2' as a wish anymore, its just a waste of time and effort. Is it because it was fresh? Every show goes through that and as it ages it changes, nothing you can do. Are you telling me that every show you shipped or were a fanatic for stayed the same all through out the entire series? If your answer is no then why expect this to be any different? My point is, don't dwell on something that will never be again. Do I wish it was focused on things like in s2? Sure, as I explained up above. But I am not ditching the show or even considering doing so just because it doesn't go the way I WANT.

I agree though far too much time is being taken away from the main cast. Howard and Raj tend to get pushed aside for Amy and I dislike that. I tune in for the four main guys not the extras.

I loved Priya, and I love Amy. I really really really hope that they don't cut her like they did Priya because in my opinion she is bringing a lot to the show and I find her quite humorous.

I agree with sarah, everyone is entitled to their opinions but I don't see how Amy is destroying the show, she is simply bringing another element to iit. If anything I think she is getting better and better, when she first came around, sure i laughed at some of her scenes but I saw her as another sheldon (who is not my favourite character, even though I do find him funny) now she is evolving into her own character, not just a female clone of sheldon.

I'm 100% for Amy staying, they need to represent as many different types of females as they can just like they try to do with the guys, showing that not all girls are stereotypically "girly", but come in many social varieties. That's not something they can do with just Penny and Bernadette, who share more similarities than differences.

I don't think Amy is ruining the show herself. I just think she is part of the overall changes that are ruinnig the show for me.

I don't actually mind the dynamic of Amy and Sheldon, but its the constant sexual inuendo and hitting on Penny that just get tiresome.
