It's hard to explain why, but I really don't like Sheldon's scenes with Amy. I think Sheldon works best as a character when he's the odd man out -- it highlights his uniqueness and makes his weird behavior rather "adorkable." But with Amy around, Sheldon's behavior looks more selfish, egotistical by comparison to her. I liked them fine when they were just friends hanging out, but the whole boyfriend/girlfriend thing has robbed him of a lot of his "spark," IMHO.

It might have something to do with Sheldon can carry a scene by himself and with Amy he looks like less like the Sheldon we are use to.

I wouldn't blame that on Amy's character... I would think that is the cause of the writing, not of Amy's character.

People mention ratings... I hope the writers/producers aren't using that to decide which characters to keep or toss (Except the main characters since the show's inception). But let's face it, it's show BUSINESS. They'll do whatever they want just to keep making money. And that's how I see the Amy situation. People thought she was funny at the start so they decided to throw her into every single freakin' episode since - no matter how overdone or overused.

It reminds me of when you hear a great song on the radio. You love it then you blink and it's on every single station. You get sick of it....flip the station but it's that song again. So you don't listen to the radio but then every store you go into is playing the song while you're shopping. It's TOO much. It gets to the point that years down the road you can't even listen to that song or you cringe. Perfect example is for me, Alanis Morrisette. Loved her in the 90's at first then her songs were overplayed. Now I can't listen to any of her songs, even if it's one of the non-famous ones. I now hate her.

Forgive my clumsy metaphor but that's how I feel the character of Amy is being handled. The first few times she was on, I didn't mind her. Small doses, as Sheldon's friend. It was even funny. Now she's everywhere. Penny scenes - Amy's there. Sheldon scenes - she's there. Group hang outs - Amy's there again. Definitely overused. THEN the writers make start making her really desperate and needy. I get that she doesn't have a lot of friends and missed out on a lot growing up but I think the writers went passed that part where it's funny and just moved onto the area where it's sad.

To me, Amy feels like a gimmick. Where the show is using her to get more ratings and more money. Whenever a show, or a part of a show feels like that, it's hard for some people to enjoy. If Amy wasn't in more scenes than the original cast, I don't think it would bother me as much. But she is, and I don't find her character funny anymore. I watch the show and every time she says something and I hear the obnoxiously-loud laugh track I just sit there and go 'THAT was supposed to be funny?' I just...don't get it.

Anyways, the other part of lame metaphor I listed above is about overexposure. Yes I just mentioned some, but I do think that in part of that, when I see ads on tv for the Big Bang Theory, I get excited, then when Amy shows up, I just feel tired. I'm so tired of her showing up everywhere.

I know I know, I've mentioned a lot of this before but I feel I need to repeat myself because obviously the writers keep repeating their mistakes.

In my opinion, when you have new characters to a show, they should not take precedent over the main characters. If you want a storyline around them then do the occasional episode but not ALL the episodes. That's like the last season of That 70's Show where Topher Grace left and they brought that new guy in. Train wreck.

I really how the writers focus more on the original cast from now on. Have scenes where Penny isn't a drunk, where she's seen hanging out with other friends on occasion since she was supposed to be so popular, or even at an audition or shooting a commercial. Scenes with the guys all together without the women (like the old days) would be nice. I was disappointed that this week's episode wasn't about the guys so much as Amy & Sheldon's relationship.

If the writers insist on using Amy, can't they just keep her in the background? I personally don't care if Sheldon gets a girlfriend, I just don't think the writers thought that out very well. It feels to me like they took what was supposed to be a funny 1-time appearance and stretched it out through season 4. Then they figured 'hey, Sheldon needs a girlfriend' and instead of using their creativity they just went with the only female character on the show that wasn't already hooked up.

I know, I'm babbling. Sorry. It's 4am and I just got home from work an hour ago...can't sleep.

Anyways, with all of that said, I must point out that I started watching TBBT last year. I saw an episode from Season 1, thought it was amazing and since I've watched all the episodes. I've liked Seasons 1-4 but I wouldn't go as far as to say that I like season 5. There are parts of it I thought were good but the rest of it is mostly just tolerance. I think it's all to do with writing - making fun OF the nerds instead of laughing WITH them AND of course, using Amy's character so much (and making her annoying). I'm hoping it'll get better.

I think Amy's character is the writing, by definition. I certainly have no problem with the actress per se, nor does Amy on her own bother me that much (although I do find her a bit too stereotypical). But in my view, the writers haven't been able to give the character of Amy the right combination of traits that actually complement Sheldon instead of muting him.

By contrast, look at Bernadette -- I love her both as a character in her own right as well as with Howard because the writers have come up with a character that is non-stereotypical and funny, and who also brings out the best in Howard. Moreover, the writers gave Bernadette some interesting flaws that Howard's character actually offsets rather well.

Some of that same synergy exists when Amy and Sheldon are interacting professionally, but I just don't see it when they're together on a personal level.

I've just started watching season 4, and I actually like Amy there SO MUCH MORE than during season 5! Wow.

I thought I had no problem with her in season 5, but now I do. She was better before! Hmm... :icon_frown:

I'd like to se them feature penny more talk about her acting, outside of the commerical what does she have to show for it? Is it still a goal of hers? How often does she go on auditions? Every once in a while she'll mention she's a actress but that's it.

Well it seems I am in the absolute minority here since I absolutely love the Amy character. She became my favorite even beating Sheldon.

To me, the writers did an excellent job in developing her character, in much less time than they had for all the other characters AND being a secondary character. Amy, on her own had only 2 storylines this seasons, Pulled Groin and Isolation Permuation.. al the others were Sheldon storylines (that included her but were still Sheldon storylines), so I don't really think of her taking over time from other characters.. and to be honest, Penny has never had a storyline by herself, except for Barbarian Sublimation, and some storylines on season 3 and 4, but this has been going on since BEFORE Amy so I don't think it has anything to to with her character. Heck, she only had one or two lines in Wiggly Finger and Friendship Contraction for example and people still complained about her, so "I like her in small doses" my sweet pattootie. (Anyhow, i do like that season 4 the "politically correct" thing to do was to hate Amy and wish her a painful death while now, it is "politically incorrect" to hate her.

Anyhow, for what I've been reading I don't think Mayim is going anywhere, Chuck has said numerous times that he thinks his cast is now complete, and I don't know if you guys read the critics.. I do, and they've been claiming for an Emmy nomination for Mayim as best supporting actress since the beginning of the season.. they even had an entire article for her on Variety naming her as an Emmy hopeful. The ratings are backing her up, Chuck is backing her up, the critics love her, and a LOT of fans do love her as well (even if this forum is not the example, but I do know she has TONS of fans).. so... unless Mayim decides to leave the show on her own, (she has said this is the best job she's ever had so I don't think it's likely anyway) she is staying.

I'm with you Sursonica, I love, love Amy, as you said, she had surpassed Sheldon in my affections and as the one who makes me laugh the most.

I'm glad to read what you wrote about Lorre & co planning to keep her, I hope she stays for the long run :)

And while I understand there are people who don't like her (there are haters for practically every character, she is not gonna be the exception) what unnerves me a bit is the fact that some of them forget at all that their dislike is just their opinion, and they like to throw the "she sucks, she's runing Sheldon by her mere presence, nobody likes her at all" as if it were the universal truth.

People, I respect your opinion, please respect the actress behind the character and those who love her too.

@Beecharmer, as you said, this is a Business, that's it, if they are keeping her (and Bernardette) it's because they consider them as an asset to the show, and, in fact, if I remember correctly, people didn't instantly loved Amy, but they had faith in her and kept developing the character, Mayim auditioned for the role and won the part, she had had no special considerations, she is just doing her job, and happens that a lot of people like her now as a part of the show. You say she doesn't work for you, well, it's okay, I respect it, I tell you she works for me and don't want to see her going anywhere.

Also, I don't understand this part of your post:

It feels to me like they took what was supposed to be a funny 1-time appearance and stretched it out through season 4. Then they figured 'hey, Sheldon needs a girlfriend' and instead of using their creativity they just went with the only female character on the show that wasn't already hooked up.

What do you mean with "instead of using their creativity"?, they didn't hook up Sheldon with the only female that was not taken, as far as I know, the character of Amy was specifically created to be Sheldon's match!, this is the way she entered the picture. In fact, I think that what they are doing right now is just developing the "let's pair Sheldon with someone" idea further.

I think Amy is a great addition to the show. she's one of my favorite characters. I love she forces a friendship upon Penny. I don't like her & Sheldon being "boyfriend & girlfriend" but that's a Sheldon issue rather than Amy!

Well Amy was only supposed to be on the season 3 finale and then they wanted to have the date on season 4 premier, and the reaction is positive so the people don't like her on if you liked her then either blame yourselves or others that made her a regular.

Hi everyone, I'm new to this forum.

I have to say I love Amy. I agree with the others that say they could stand to cut back on the lesbian jokes, but other than that I think she brings so much to the show. And the like some others have said, I think the lesbian comments are Amy's way of expressing admiration of Penny. It's like hero worship or an innocent girl crush. I don't think she's taking away from the guys' sls any more than the other two girls. The difference is now there are 3 girls and they hang out together and sometimes have their own sl together, but Amy never has her OWN sl on her ow w/o penny and Bernadette or Sheldon, w/ the exception of the episode when she went to the wedding w/ Leonard.

I think Amy and Sheldon are perfect together honestly. It's obvious he has feelings for her and just because he's not interested in sex now with Amy doesn't mean he will never be, and that's what I don't see people addressing. He has issues with intimacy and emtions but as we have seen that is changing slowly. When his mother visited he realized that emotionally he is no different than anyone else, with the help of Amy, and he's starting to come to terms with his feelings for Amy and what being in a relationship means. He's evolving as a result of his relationships, romantic and platonic, all the guys are, and isn't that the point of the characters? I don't understand why anyone would expect Sheldon to never grow or evolve over the course of the series? All characters do, it's only natural. I don't see why Sheldon should be the exception or remain stagnant at the expense of character development. I'm not saying they should just throw Amy and Sheldon into bed, but given time I think it could be written as making sense. And Amy in general adds a unique character to the girls that is like Sheldon in some ways but not in others. I think it makes the show as a whole more interesting. The girls bring a much needed element to the group and yes it was fun with just the guys but it would get old after a while. The characters need to expand their world as time moves on. It hasn't changed who they are as characters.

Btw, unrelated, but I don't agree that Sheldon wouldn't have freaked out over the bird pre Amy either. He's always been afraid of weird things and had his phobias. There's nothing to suggest Sheldon's behavior was as a result of her influence. This is a guy that has a line taped for how far people have to stand away from the toilet and the mirror and who faints at the site of blood, and who will writer letters about flags flying in the wrong order in front of a building. Why is it a huge leap that he be afraid of birds?

I also find that a lot (not all) of people that dislike Amy and the Amy/Sheldon thing are Penny/Sheldon shippers, so really there's often another agenda behind it.

Well for one people can't make an opinion on Amy due to her obession on penny and the lesbian jokes so with these they can't stand it thus Amy as well if they did away with this then they can then determine if they like her.

The bird/flag thing I don't see it as a Amy influence just I can't see him having an episode like this last season much less previous ones but it's not Amy who I'd on now but the writers to blame for those episode.

As for shenny I disagree maybe some but overall it's just taking away from Sheldon and penny's friendship and there's not as many scenes with just the two like there was and at times she's not in the same room as him as they used to be.

I also totally agree with amshafe. I actually loved, loved the scene when sheldon touches the bird. That episode had much more meaning than just being about a bird. Sheldon did something that he was afraid of, and realized that he liked it. It's a precursor to more things to come.

Exactly. It struck me as a deeply significant incident. Two things happened to Sheldon in this story - or rather, three.

One, he realized that it is possible for him to get over a long-standing fear of something - 'all these years spent in fear - for nothing!' - and be all the better for it. (Symbolizing his fear of romantic relationships or even sex?)

Two - he developed a sudden deep emotional attachment to the very thing he had feared. Sheldon uses the word 'love' rarely.. he used it for Lovey Dovey.

And three - almost as soon as he learned to love it, he lost it. 'Come back here, you stupid bird, so I can love you!' - these were some of the most meaningful words to come out of Sheldon's mouth, because they showed that while Sheldon is learning how to feel love, he is still in an immature, childish emotional phase where he expects the world and his love objects to conform to what he wants. The whole experience probably gave him to understand, to some degree, that it doesn't work that way, and also engendered in him a fear of losing something valuable just because he delayed too much in expressing his attachment in the first place.

I think all these little subliminal messages acted as catalysts in Sheldon's finally getting it together and proposing a relationship upgrade to Amy in the very next episode. Still in an immature, rigid way, motivated largely by possessiveness and the fear of loss; but for Sheldon, that was still a huge step.

Pomita, I'd marry you if you weren't already taken...... what the hell, marry me anyway LOL!

I couldn't have said it better. The writers know they have to do things with Sheldon in a much more careful way than with the other characters and I do believe that this was a resource the writers used as to show development on him, not being so direct about it, hinting it, and laying bases for what was to happen next episode (and the season)

Sursonica - I thought we're already married, as per records elsewhere. ;)

I've said it many times before, but I can't help wondering at the subtle hints and psychological layers that the writers use for moving the Sheldon/Amy story forward. I don't see them showing as much intricacy in the other romantic arcs, so it's obvious that they're rather determined to have a good go at creating something memorable here.

Something haunted in Sheldon's eyes, when the bird flies away and he stays at the window gazing helplessly after it.. that moment stays with me.

:icon_lol: is true!! we are already married! (I'm being a bad spouse) :( I promise I'll behave.

And something else on that scene with the bird flying away... Amy shows up behind him just as he sees the bird fly away, he turns to her, she says she is sorry for that, and when he turns back to the window to shout, she is still there behind him.

Pomita -- all what you said is so very true. The writers know they have something special here and they are showing us what going to happen in subtle ways. I loved the bird episode; and good observation that he asked amy to be his girlfriend in the very next episode -- the scene with sheldon and amy in the movie theater makes me smile every time I watch it. Love, love the look on sheldon's face while he tries to ask Amy to be his girlfriend. :)

and they even used an "epic movie music background" using the cinema as an excuse in that scene. It made it perfect.
