Slicknickshady Posted April 27, 2012 Posted April 27, 2012 The Creators said Sheldon and Penny will never happen. It won't. You shenny shippers just don't think about how bad it would make both sheldon and penny look. Leonard would disown them forever. rickfromillinois Posted May 18, 2012 Posted May 18, 2012 I am curious as to why the people who believe that the show has become so terrible not only continue to watch it but feel strongly enough to come to fan threads and make comments? I keep hearing how downhill the show has gone since season 2 for some and season 3 for others. We have just finished season 5. That would mean that there are people who no longer like the show but continued to watch it for 2 additional years and I daresay will watch it again next near. The would mean that there are some who watch a show that they no longer find entertaining for as long if not longer then the time they did enjoy it. Either the show hasn't decayed that much or they are not only extremely optimistic about the show changing, or just perhaps they are creatures of habit. Pomita Posted May 18, 2012 Posted May 18, 2012 The last comment makes me recollect; now season 3 has joined the rose-tinted era of 'good old days' nostalgia, but I remember that there were MANY complaints at that time on this board, about the show declining and Sheldon going out of character. Many people hated Sheldon's drunk speech in Pants Alternative, for instance, and his hyper-charged behavior (especially the ball-pit scene) in Einstein Approximation. At that time, people were like 'all the science has been left behind in seasons 1 and 2, and season 3 is just some crap about Sheldon going crazy and acting OOC'. I tried to point out that Einstein Approximation had a very science-oriented theme, and scientists can indeed lose it when they're stuck in the middle of a complicated problem (a fact also mentioned and praised in that year's Nobel speech), but no-one listened. In fact, there were many of the view that the show had already jumped the shark when Sheldon started saying 'Bazinga'. I don't know if some of the same people are still here now, saying that seasons 1 to 3 were wonderful and it started to get horrible season 4 onwards. If so, I would like to ask them - is this going to shift further? (i.e. in season 7, will you still be here, saying that seasons 1-5 were golden and season 7 sucks so bad?) In case you haven't noticed, some of us who don't like the direction of the show are still somewhat obsessed with it. Obvious truth is obvious. So now I will turn the question around (as I will do every time I see this question as I have already answered it multiple times). Why would anyone who must have disliked the show so much as to desire "evolution of the characters" or "growth" or whatever have not only kept watching it, but through focus groups or feedback or however else opinion is sent to the writers, actively influenced the change from the original premise to the relationship centric show that it is today? Guest I'm not dead Cheryl Posted May 18, 2012 Posted May 18, 2012 I don't think any group has/is/will influence the writers. They don't care. And they shouldn't. They are the ones who are running the show, why should they care? Listening to the fans always ruins things. Heck, if it was for that, then Sheldon & Penny would be having sex all the time then, since Shenny's usually harass Bill & the rest of the writing crew via twitter and other mediums to try to convince them. Do you know what they listen to? Ratings and critics. Ratings are at an all-time high, critics love it, the show got nominated for an Emmy, Jim as won two, Johnny got nominated. That's all they care. BTW, the fact that I like the way the show progressed, doesn't mean that "I hated" the show as it originally was.. wth is that? Of course I loved it, I loved it how it was, and I love how it evolved.. sheesh

Let me reply to this with a personal comment. I did not dislike myself (and my friends) at 5, or 15, or 25. I liked and accepted myself as I was then, and I like and accept myself as I am now. I just know that I have grown and changed in all these years - I grow and evolve and learn new things and new ways of being every year - and now, at 35, I cannot behave in exactly the same way, believe and enjoy exactly the same things, as I did 5 or 10 years back. And I love that I have been able to move forward on the path of life in this way, even if it has meant giving up some of the things that once meant a lot to me. It's the same with this show and these characters. I loved them when they were younger, more inexperienced and awkward; I love them now, I respect them for the distance they've moved very organically in these 5 years, and I look forward with curiosity and pleasure to see what milestones await them next. N.B. I have not tried to influence the writers with letters or tweets. And even if anyone has, I doubt if the writers ever take those seriously. They must be getting thousands of completely contradictory suggestions every day, judging by the range of opinions just on this board. Astonishing. Do you really think that the writers / producers don't engage focus groups and do polling to determine what direction to take the show in? How can you explain the radical re-tooling of the show to re-direct it to the mainstream, lowest common denominator? They started off with a popular show focusing on nerds / geeks / scientists and turned it into a show about relationships. The humour is different now, the plotlines are different. I can't imagine that a group of people who came up with the original show - which was the show that originally became popular - would just switch gears without some kind of input from somewhere. I would imagine that they discovered that even though there were a certain set of people watching the show, that if they re-tooled it they could take it to a different but larger group that would be more likely to buy whatever products the advertizers wanted to sell. It has changed, no-one is denying that, but I wouldn't call it a radical re-tooling. No. Not at all. And no, I don't think they do that, and if they do, I don't think it had anything to do with the change on the show. To me, they were running out of storylines. That's why for me, most of season 3 was lackluster as well as the first half of Season 4 (except a few episodes). That was pretty evident to me, at least. The show was always about nerds/geeks/scientists.... in relationships. The Leonard/Penny thing was from the pilot, Raj/Howard were always trying to get women, they didn't get any (except for a few) but seeking relationships does fall in "relationship plot". What has changed now is that they have steady relationships, that's the change. But the relationships were always there. but whateaver I guess I was watching a different show? or is it like we say in my country "todo tiempo pasado fue mejor" (the past is always better)? Is like some people see seasons 1-2-3 with idealized and selective filtered glasses, and doesn't remember the whole Leonard/Penny drama, the whole Leonard/Leslie drama, the whole Howard/Leslie, the whole Howard and Raj complaining that they didn't get women. And Howard/Bernadette from season

Only the present is bad.
