Why I love Amy Farrah Fowler

I love Amy Farrah Fowler.

Amy Farrah Fowler is not the kind of girl a lot of people want to see on TV. Why? because she is the type of girl most of people just ignores. And it makes me sad to think that. Truth hurts sometimes. And hurt is something Amy has had a great deal of.

It hurts to be a lonely person, it hurts to be like Amy. As a kid, she wanted friends, she wanted to be like everyone else. But she wasn't. But she couldn't. And it wasn't her fault.

I can imagine how happy she was when she finally "shared the room with a little vietnamese girl" and how devastated she must have been when the girl didn't make it trhough the night. This little girl, was the world to Amy.... 20-something years later, Amy still remembers that night as a happy experience, despite what happenned after.

20-something years later, she still gets excited about being invited to a slumber party. 20-something years later, she still wants to do the "clicky crap" from highschool she never got to do because she didn't have any friends.

And she really tried very hard. And she still tries very hard. 20-something years later, and she didn't give up. Because when the heart leads us to want something it never gives up. She can come up a little strong sometimes.. how could she not? she has a heart full of love and never had a single person to give it to. And if she never had anyone to give all that love to, how could she know all the social ways and "appropiate ways" to demonstrate that love?

And she loves Penny, and she loves Sheldon... they took her out of her loneliness. Sheldon accepted her right away, just the way she was, without judging her for her ways, or her clothes, or her look. And it was almost surely the first person that did it. She found someone to share her things with, to share her toughts and her passion about science. And he shares his life with her, and he shared his friends with her. And he, inadvertedly, led her to Penny.

And she met Penny. And she saw in Penny what she always wanted to be. I think Amy sees Penny as her role model. As someone who is all what Amy always wanted to be but couldn't. And she hangs on to her frienship, in a way some people say "too pathetic", but that I find absolutely endearing, honest and full of happiness. Full of happiness because she finally met someone who would hang out with her. Someone who as "cool" and pretty as Penny is, has a heart of gold, and would never willingly humilliate her. And Amy sees that. And Amy knows it. Because she always had to live her life as an observer, as an outcast, as someone who sits alone in the school's cafeteria and watches the world and analizes it, hoping someday she will understand.

And she is a Neurobiologist. And she wants to know how the brain works. And brains work on people. And she wants to know about people. She wants to be one of them. With all her heart. But sometimes, she is still misunderstood, and sometimes, she still tries too hard, and sometimes, she is still ignored and shunned. But she has Penny... and she has Sheldon... And she has a bunch of people who watch her every week. And a lot of those people, finally realized, that Amy Farrah Fowler exists. And that she doesn't deserve to be ignored, and that she doesn't deserved to be shunned, and that she doesn't deserve to be hurt anymore.

Is this maybe too sentimental, maybe a little corny? .... sure as hell it is, but I don't care. Thanks Bill, thanks to Chuck, and to the writers that created such a wonderful character.

She is fictional. And a perfect picture of millions of nerdy, social outcasts. Much more than Sheldon. Sheldon never cared, and still doesn't care, that he wasn't popular. He never wanted to be included in everyone else's fun. He sees himself as superior. Amy wants to be popular. She wants to be included. Sheldon looks back with derision on those in his past that mocked or bullied him. Amy looks back with pain and wishes things could have been different.

Amy is pathetic in her worship of all things popular. She's much better than any of these brain-dead floozies, why doesn't she realize it?

Amy is an extremely intelligent girl who's very successful in her scientific field. To wish to become more popular and socially successful is one thing, and IMO she should try (and honestly, it's not even difficult - come one, she's not hideous, she's smart, she can learn to fit in socially if she put her enormous brain to it)... But to worship someone as far beneath her as Penny-the-promiscuous-drunkard-loser-waitress? Really? Just because Penny was popular and Amy was a nerd? How very sad.

I thought people got behind these stupid things once they left high school. When the "popular" girl is a loser server in a chain restaurant without any prospects, and the unpopular "nerd" girl is a rising star scientist, just who should be envious of whom exactly?

Amy idealizes Penny. She thinks she is perfect. Yes, Amy is delusional regarding Penny, but can you blame her? She's the fist girl who ever even allowed Amy to be her friend. She was never mean to her, so she thinks Penny is perfect.

Amy is smart, and extremely intelligent, but, just like Sheldon, she is not the role model of psychological health. She grew up with an overprotective mother (who wouldn't even let her watch Grease in fear she might join a gang and warned her all the time about the "drug and alcohol peer pressure"), didn't have any friends, and the people around her always bullied and humilliated her. Along comes Penny and is not mean to her, and allows her to call her "bestie" and invites her to hang out, it's not far-fetched at all she will idealize her. I do hope that someday she does realize that Penny is not as perfect as she thinks she is.

And I don't really think Sheldon didn't care at all. He just dealt with it differently. Sheldon building a sonic death ray to kill the neighbourhoods kids is not that healthy either.

You know what...I think that every geek girl (or at least many geek girls) goes through an Amy phase in their late teens or 20s. It's a delayed adolescence of sorts, when you finally reach an age and find a community where you can be who you are AND popular...only to realize that you're kind of fuzzy on who you are outside of your intellect, and how to be normal without being mundane. So you experiment, and goof stuff up, and get vulnerable, and generally stumble around as you try to cast off your loneliness and discover how to be yourself and have friends at the same time. And if you're lucky like Amy, you find friends who support you and put up with you in that process, and care about you enough to let you wear the frakking tiara and be the self-obsessed princess for a while. As for the Amy/Penny thing...Something tells me there's going to be a day (possibly next season) where Amy's growing confidence and Penny's thoughtlessness converge. Penny is eventually going to hurt Amy's feelings, and Amy's crush/idol worship/whatever will die. It'll be interesting to see if they can reform a friendship on a more even ground. I hope so--they're good for each other.

It should also be added that Amy thinks Penny is great is certain aspects, however if she thought Penny was perfect then she would try to be Penny. Amy does not turn her back on her intelligence or career, she just wants the social aspect of life.

Sheldon's "I don't care because they are stupid" stance is a coping mechanism, a good one but I don't for one minute think that the tough times he went through as a child he sees so objectively. And the guy loves what he loves, there is science, but then there are comic books, super heros, sci fi movies & television.

Amy wants to expand her life, while Sheldon is happy with having a narrow enclosed life. The relationship between the two bugs me, I wish Amy broke up with Sheldon and found someone to actually share her romantic side with. If she had to hook up with one of the guys, why not Raj? Let Sheldon be free and content with his routine.

Oh, and Amy realizes Penny is not perfect, when she compared her to Priya it was hilarious. At first Amy said that Penny had nothing to worry about being compared to Priya, but after analyzing the situation (as only Amy & Sheldon do) she basically said that Priya was smart, successful and was from the culture who wrote the book on sex.

And in comparison to the counter parts of the opposite sex, Howard & Leonard would sleep with and be content with any women who gave them the time of day. Amy seeks companionship whereas the guys seek the sheets.

I think you mostly nailed it. However, I think she sees the potential in Sheldon--he can be a very caring/romantic guy IF you catch him at the right second and with his defenses down. (See: the Tiara, which was utterly romantic in a very Shamy way). That kind of guy, if you can break into his "trusted" zone, he's pretty much yours for life. That's what Amy wants in her life now that she realizes that she *can* have it--it's painfully clear from the wedding obsession, and in true Geek Girl fashion she's taking the most direct and methodical route possible to her goal.

This is so me, very often even till now, that it's almost scary. Yes, I'm one of those 'ugly', socally awkward science-nerd girls who identify with her.

Absolutely. For anyone who wonders what Amy sees in Sheldon, this:

Trust me, it's not easy to find that kind of acceptance. Plus they genuinely understand each other and enjoy each other's company. Plus she finds him attractive. Plus, as @Camille says, Amy can be certain of Sheldon's complete devotion. Once she breaks through his shell (which she already has, to a great extent), he's hers for life. He's never going to look elsewhere - she's his only lady, apart from science.

Yeah, I know, there are actually a gazillion "I love Amy" threads, it's not like we needed another one (please insert the Leonard pic in Disgusted icon here), it isn't like there are enough, original and well thought hate threads out there.

Seriously, to "forbid" hate and lies inside a hate thread, what kind of oxiMoron is that?

I understand people can like or dislike whatever they want, and say it out loud too, internet's anonymity allows a lot of things, but I'm glad you opened this thread, at least you saved me the temptation of dignify some nosense with a reply.

I'm not questioning the right of some people to hate on her (as there's hate for virtually any fictional character), just as I expect that same people could be able to respect that there are many people out there who love her to pieces, as I do.

She is actually the part I love the most about the show right now (and I love the show as a whole a great deal)

She has easily surpassed Sheldon this season as my favorite character.

And regarding the "she is runining Sheldon", I find it interesting that those episodes people seemed to be most taken aback by him, are those were Amy wasn't with him, those "just Sheldon being Sheldon" bits: his silly attempts to scare his friends in Halloween, his even sillier attempts to get rid of the bluejay, the way he behaved at the stag party, in the "transporter malfunction" and the Hawking episode, etc.

I even see the controversy around her as a positive thing, she is being noticed, she is important and relevant, otherwise, why to bother? she is getting a lot of love as lately, and, yes, she is still getting hate too, but I'd say good part of that hate is caused by fear.

If you notice with Amy when she first appeared she was abrupt and rude (in a funny way) to the others but now that she has spent time with them all, they accept her and vice versa, Amy has changed but in a good way

Agreed--i bumped into the first episode with Amy a few weeks ago and was reminded just how far she's come in 2 seasons. Amy's character arc from her robotic beginnings to now is almost as intriguing to watch as Sheldon's.

The only problem that I have ever had with Amy is when she is coming on to Penny. When she isn't doing that I find her funny and a good addition to the show.
