Why I love Amy Farrah Fowler

Recommended Posts

I'm kinda with you on that one Rick--it was sort of awkward/funny the first time or two, but it's now bordering on creepy (and I'm not sure which side of the border). I hope they use the Handholding Implications (now there's a title for the season 6 premiere...) to jettison that aspect of the character.

Amy wants to expand her life, while Sheldon is happy with having a narrow enclosed life. The relationship between the two bugs me, I wish Amy broke up with Sheldon and found someone to actually share her romantic side with. If she had to hook up with one of the guys, why not Raj? Let Sheldon be free and content with his routine.

I always thought that could've been a problem but so far it's not a big enough issue that ever inflicted upon them. At this point, there's still time for him to turn into the person Amy wants him to be. Though, if it does become an issue it seems like an good story. At the same time, this problem can create a lot of unfunny drama (as it did for LP). If anything, it's definitely a scenario that seem odd for me to see. Like if Amy asked Sheldon, "where this relationship is going?" it would sound like such a realistic and serious situation for Sheldon to be in. So I think it's way more interesting for Sheldon to slowly transition into genuinely wanting the same things as her.... and I have more faith in that than I actually should.

I always thought that could've been a problem that can come between them but so far it's not a big issue that ever inflicted upon them. At this point, there's still time for him to turn into the person Amy wants him to be. Though, if it does become an issue it seems like an good story. I agree. The mismatch in their needs regarding physical affection is the main problem the writers seem to have planned for them, we could say they have an almost exemplary relationship in practically every other aspect.

However, this conflict and Sheldon's hesitation is much more believable than in L/P's case. Sometimes I have trouble to understand Penny's aversion to commitment, I don't think it's very well justified.

In the other hand, with S/A, It's the first relationship ever for both of them, Sheldon has been avoiding feelings, attatchment and touching since his early childhood, it's not like he will turn into a different person overnight, and Amy can seem as eager as you want, but she is equally unexperienced as him.

What happened in the last two episodes surprised me, though. They showed Sheldon could quickly develop more interest in the physical aspect of their relationship than I imagined. I think they are preparing the ground to show he can do things, not just because Amy wants him to do them, but because he wants them too.

And I don't think Sheldon could continue "free and content with his routine" anymore, they have clearly stablished that he is not okay with Amy hanging out with other men, that was why he hit Leonard, and also his main motivation to take action and make her his girlfriend. Yes, I was also surprised with that turn of events, but they did it, speaking of going too OOC, it would be a bit weird if suddenly he doesn't care anymore, they have been two whole seasons preparing this development.

And Amy is not after any other man either, they had set up options for her, and, so far, she still prefers Sheldon, those were just devices to make them get closer instead of setting them apart. We don't know yet what will happen in a future, but I venture to say they are making them (slowly) walk towards each other.

@sarah - I agree. And Bill Prady has gone on record to say that 'Sheldon won't change, but he is capable of things that we haven't seen him doing'.. that's a pretty clear hint.

I'm late to this, but that was wonderfully written. I also root for Amy. I just love her.

I really liked the part about her loving Penny and loving Sheldon.

I also think that, in some ways, she made Penny a better person because she knew Amy looked up to her.

Penny went through this weird downward slope in the beginning of season 5 and there's a chunk of episodes where I REALLY don't like her character, as she was a functioning alcoholic doing shady things for a little bit. She is Bernadette's good friend, too, of course, but I think she knows how much she means to Amy and is one of the reasons why Penny is evolving, because I'm a believer in the theory that Penny is a diamond in the rough.

Same with Amy, though. She grows as Sheldon grows. It's pretty awesome.

True. And at the risk of taking this off topic, the show really needs to do a better job of getting us into Penny's head for this evolution into a better person, which I think/hope will kick into high gear in season 6. And I have a sneaking suspicion Amy will somehow be the catalyst for that.

I would really like to see this.

IMO the two characters who are actually in need of some growth and progress now, are Penny and Raj. I'm hoping that they intend to work on that in season 6, since season 5 focused quite heavily on the development of Sheldon/Amy and Howard/Bernadette.

I agree very much with you. Even when the one who pursued the friendship and had made the biggest effort for it to work was Amy and not Penny, she gave him the opportunity to hang out with her, not rejection, that highlighted the biggest quality Penny has IMO, wich is a kind and accepting heart.

My favorite interaction between them was when Penny tried to cheer Amy up and give her advice after Sheldon failed to accompany her to that party. They acted like genuine friends.

amy's a bit... off. she's ovbiously dosn't understand what is socially acceptable or not, except not in a funny sweet way like sheldon. More like a wtf way. she's also not even slighlty funnyor for that matter intressting. but I dont like amy mainly becuase of how she changed the show.

Oh, okay. I figured that was it.

I have the feeling it's implied that, without formal diagnosis, just as with Sheldon, Amy also presents some Aspie characteristics. Something that, for sure, was a factor that contributed to her isolation as a kid. The others, specially Penny (since she is the one that hangs out the most with her, apart from Sheldon) treat her with that kind of patience, trying to teach her what's okay and what's not.

I often wonder why part of the audience judge her so harshly while, at the same time, they are so tolerant with Sheldon when he does/says the same kind of things, I think we are bound to understand that, besides of their lack of experience in any kind of personal relationships, none of them is neurotypical. Perhaps that's also another point of identification between them.

Thing is, you and me will have to agree to disagree in this point :icon_cheesygrin:

I find her social awkwardness as funny, endearing and sweet as Sheldon's (sometimes even more)

I like Amy, in small doses, I don't think she should ever be the main subject of an episode, but I understand that as her b/friend is Sheldon she will be front and centre a few times. more than Bernadette should be. I too wish they would stop her "hitting" on Penny, that would probably make her character more likeable to more people.

I have a feeling that season 6 will be dominated by the Amy/Sheldon relationship leading up to the ratings-smashing episode where they have coitus. Bet the farm on it.

This would completely end he series, you know ow man would be pissed off?

That would be too predictable. I fully expect Sheldon regressing quite a lot (from fear) before he makes that leap.

I like Amy but not with Sheldon. That's probably a werid opinion but I don't like too similar in couples.

That's not weird. "Too similar" gets very boring very fast. Both on TV and in RL.

Not in real life. You have to have more similarities than differences or you never want to do anything together. It's just too hard. Just my own experience of course.

Saying that, it can work on TV for comic effect, if you don't mind the show focusing on misunderstandings all the time. I'd rather not see that myself. They've touched on it already. Amy and Sheldon don't agree on everything but it's not their similarities that have caused conflict it's their differences. She doesn't like Sci fi, comics or cult. He doesn't like cuddling and social events.

I was about to say that. 'Opposites attract' is a very teen-romantic concept, but the fact is that most long-term relationships in real life are built on similarities, matching wavelengths and shared values, goals, likes and dislikes.

Some measure of similarity is IMO required for happiness. However, too similar is not good (speaking from experience :icon_lol:).

It's the easiest thing, to fall in love with your mental/ upringing/ values/ emotional twin. Eventually though it gets really blah.

The happiest long lasting couples are those that compliment each other. When both of you have the same shortcomings, who's going to balance them out?

My point exactly being that Sheldon and Amy are similar but not too similar. IMO, of course.

You meant 'complement'. Though I agree that compliments are important too. :D
