In the first episode he was going to masterbate for money, so I'm guessing it's something he has done before.

This has been written on the forum a few times but I thought I'd just paste in the passage instead ...

The first four episodes of The Big Bang Theory portray Sheldon somewhat inconsistently with his later characterization. He is seen trying to impress Penny, knocking at doors in a "normal" way, participating in a salsa class, and attempting to donate to a sperm bank (though he eventually refuses because he feels there is no guarantee his sperm will produce high-IQ offspring).[26] According to Prady, the character "began to evolve after episode five or so and became his own thing".

Sheldon is drinking alcohol and showing emotion for Howard so sure why not? He should drive too while he's at it.

There are a lot more fans who prefer they don't have sex than I realised. We hear the cry for sex and think everyone must agree, but it may not be the case. Some fans like the fact there is a TV couple without a sexual component to their relationship. Chuck resisted the shenny's and they hassled him something chronic. Whatever he does, I don't think he's one who aims to please the public if he's already made his mind up about something. So it could go either way, but my instinct tells me Sheldon is his invention and he wants to protect that. And we keep watching......

Just as the show has never labeled Sheldon as an Aspie (though he does display some prominent characteristics of it), they have never labeled him as asexual. So they've left themselves enough wiggle room to go where they want with him. Certain comments, like the one Sursonica pointed out about 'a cross we must all bear', hint at a determined suppression on his part, because of his views and his germaphobia, rather than total disinterest.

As some people said, there are many levels of sexuality, it's not in black and white. Sheldon giving in to some degree of intimacy with Amy, at some point, doesn't have to mean that he's going to turn into a horndog and violate everything he stands for. I've heard that even asexual people can, at times, develop such a deep emotional attachment with a specific person that intimacy with that person follows naturally just from that sentiment - even if they never feel any kind of sexual desire otherwise, or in general. It's possible that things between Sheldon and Amy are going to be like that.

The events of Launch Acceleration, and Amy's discovery of her own sexual interest during the last season, seem to indicate that they plan to take them there some day. (I'm almost sure that the show intends Sheldon and Amy as endgame). But even if they do, I like to believe that physicality will never be the most important aspect between them - their relationship will always remain primarily 'of the mind', because that is what their attraction is based on.

absolutely agree.

Another thing I don't understand is many people's claim that "having sex would change him completely" I don't get it. Poeple don't change when having sex, it doesn't change your personality.

I am absolutely certain I am the same person I was before I started having sex. I like the same music, have the same idiosyncracies, like the same food, and I'm still a germaphobe as I always was. People don't turn into dinosaurs when they start having sex. (LOL the dinosaur part comes form my grandma who was always annoyed when someone referred to a girl "she became a young lady" when having her first period. Her go-to expression was: what was she before.. a dinosaur?, but I disgress).

As Pomita said, even if he started having sex, I don't think he would turn into Howard, just because he had sex, or anything close to that.

I understand people might want him to stay as he is and that is fine, but I don't agree with the statement that "having sex would completely change him"

Accepting sex as a part of his life would certainly be a paradigm shift for Sheldon, but I believe he is already (unconsciously) on that path, right from when he 'officialized' his relationship with Amy, and even more from the time when he realized that he fantasizes about her and has 'affectionate feelings for her at inappropriate times'. From there to actual intimacy is not a huge leap. And I agree that it's not likely to change Sheldon's basic nature at all. If anything, falling in love (of which he is showing symptoms right now) is more liable to influence one's personality, rather than just the progression to the physical act.

I like the dinosaur analogy. :D

What was the book they gave him? I have heard it being mentioned

We haven't been told the name of the book. We only know that his friends gave it to him, he tried to read it and it gave him nightmares. :D

when Sheldon & Amy became friends, they clarified that "theirs is a relationship of the mind" & they hit it off on a "purely intellectual level". so I think they should keep it that way. I was upset enough when they announced they were boyfriend & girlfriend. I was like, "ohh nooo". I didn't like when they started having Amy make advances toward Sheldon. the holding hands, or hugging was innocent enough. but then Amy started her seduction attempts, and it kinda went downhill from there...

I think it would definitely be interesting if Sheldon & Amy were to have sex but obviously it would be weird if they did it any time soon. I really like how the writers are taking things slow with these two. It's the most fun and unique relationship I've ever watched on TV and I'm just gonna enjoy the ride :-). I imagine if they were to have sex it would be near or at the end of the show considering it took over a year for Sheldon to grab her hand. LOL.

agreed. I think the way they've been handling it ultil now has really made it endearing to a big part of the audience. It is refreshing to see a relationship like this, where they take it slow and have a relationship on their own terms, before jumping in the sack like every other relationship on TV.

There is no other couple on TV that can have people expectant and shocked after something so simple as a hand-hold. I mean, think about it, Sheldon took her hand on the Season finale and for 5 months it has been an endless discussion and analysis and fanarts and gifs all over... again, over something as simple as a hand-hold.

I really hope they keep handling this relationship this way. Slow. Baby steps, but throwing in something every once in a while like they've been doing so far.

I just posted in the S6 thread about an idea I had related to that book and Sheldon's nightmares. Something along the lines of how Sheldon might react to a...um...(whispering embarrassedly)...wet dream...

That make's sense considering he's notorious for covering up his true feelings about different things. For example, when Amy did her own experiment to make him increase his feelings for her and he liked it but acted like it was a terrible thing. LOL.

Well, there's a book alright since the writers wrote it in....just a fake one obviously that will never be seen by us. LOL. Yeah honestly, I'll be shocked if they ever make them have sex. The writers very well may put it in at some point in the future because it's one of those questions that keeps popping up by people and now even Jim is to the point (based on an interview I watched where they were answering a few tweets) where he wants to see it happen at some point in the future. He didn't feel that way before so I found that interesting. We shall see :-).

No, no, a thousand times no! The Dungeons & Dragons version of Shamy sex made me so uncomfortable that I may have to revert to reruns from now on -- and that will get old in a decade or so. In fact, I'd like to ask the writers to ditch Amy altogether, but I fear there's no going back from this. Remember Moonlighting, guys!

I hear ya! I didn't feel that comfortable myself, but I don't think they should ditch her. Or that they would. She has a lot of her own fans now. Irrespective of Sheldon. But their relationship is a bit meh!

eww No ways!!! the last shamy bit in lovespell potential was very awkward for me. I pray to the writers to keep things platonic between them or break them up. Like lenny and howardette aren't enough, we need these two to go down that sexual path too??

Just messin' with nested quotes. And still wondering about  Sheldon's reaction to the physicality,  " oh, boy" might be the least of it . But there might be some nerd stuff that is applicable in the Alfred Bester novel "Tiger, Tiger", otherwise known as "The Stars My Destination". Love through leaded glass.

But I am getting on-board. Still a teeny bit quizzical, but I can see the connection to the original premise as embodied in that titular joke. Ms Bialik is the real thing.

Where my imagination fails me is what happens after...
