BigBang Posted June 4, 2012 Posted June 4, 2012 From another thread: How much of a geek am I, I read the whole thing lol I always wanted to ask, what is the difference between a "geek", a "nerd", and a "dork"?
netmouse Posted June 6, 2012 Posted June 6, 2012 a geek knows everything about Star Wars. a nerd owns everything Star Wars. a dork dresses up and re-enacts scenes from Star Wars in front of a video camera. (google "Star Wars kid" on Youtube to see a great example)

BillF63 Posted June 6, 2012 Posted June 6, 2012 I always thought a geek was really tech savy with computers and technology. A nerd was into science fiction etc. A nerd was also socially inept. Many times these two identities are found in the same person. I think a dork is just a more derogatory mean spirited term people used toward nerds and geeks. I am a nerd because I love science fiction films etc. I am not a geek because I am not really at all tech savy. I am also not socially inept. As a part time musician I have no problem socializing with people.

Fruit Loop Posted June 6, 2012 Posted June 6, 2012 a geek knows everything about Star Wars. a nerd owns everything Star Wars. a dork dresses up and re-enacts scenes from Star Wars in front of a video camera. (google "Star Wars kid" on Youtube to see a great example) While I like the Star wars description, I have to go with the Computer Geek and ScFi Nerd. A dork is a real spaatz who can't chew gum and walk down the street at the same time. They can be a Geek or a Nerd. But general just plain Dork. They all can have that inbred Uncle Dad look on their face. That is the "I don't have a clue" Look. Generally Their clothes would have been very stylish in 1955. . netmouse Posted June 6, 2012 Posted June 6, 2012 I got to "spaatz" and started giggling :D Good description of a dork, Fruit Loop.

A dork is a nerdy or geeky spaaz. But a spaaz doesn't have to be a dork. A geek is into sciences, a nerd is into sci-fi or fantasy. A geek goes to work for Microsoft or Bristol-Myers Squibb, a nerd goes to Comic Con and midnight premiere of Harry Potter. A dork or a spaaz are socially awkward, but a geek or a nerd can be successful social butterflies, right? I think I'm getting the hang of it... Moonbase Posted June 6, 2012 Posted June 6, 2012 Love all the descriptions, but we have dweeb now as well ?? Is this the pie chart that you were talking about, netmouse?
BigBang Posted June 6, 2012 Posted June 6, 2012 Darn, I almost had it figured out, now you have to introduce a "dweeb"! Can a "dweeb" be defined as a variation of a "socially clueless but super smart geek"?
Disgusted Posted June 6, 2012 Posted June 6, 2012 Love all the descriptions, but we have dweeb now as well ?? Is this the pie chart that you were talking about, netmouse? Dweeb!!! You've found the missing part of the rosetta stone! It all makes sense now. I got to "spaatz" and started giggling :D It's actually "spazz" as in spasmodic. Good description of a dork, Fruit Loop. netmouse Posted June 7, 2012 Posted June 7, 2012 @Moonbase: yup, that's the chart I was looking for, tyvm. "Dork" conjures an association with stupidity.
Pomita Posted June 7, 2012 Posted June 7, 2012 Now someone please send this pie chart to Jim, who (when asked in an interview whether he's geeky or nerdy) very earnestly said that he's more geeky than nerdy, because he considers himself to be dorky, and he thinks that geeky is closer to dorky than nerdy is close to dorky. :D
Schrödinger's Cat Posted June 8, 2012 Posted June 8, 2012 Off topic, but it was asked... This Three Stooges fan is not interested in that movie. It looks like yet another atrocious modern adaptation (Nuns in bikinis? Give me a break). Besides, the classic Stooges are on in HD daily. We DVR three or four at a time and watch. My 7 year old LOVES them...

garyp Posted June 10, 2012 Posted June 10, 2012 I always thought a nerd was an old school term that had been updated with the advent of PCs back in the 80's. When I was in High School there weren't any PCs but there were plenty of nerds but those were the super smart guys in the Chess Club and were interested in Math and Science. They were also socially inept. But, when the PC was introduced in the 80's then the nerds became geeks to reflect their interest in computers. They were also socially inept. Dorks were considered to be socially inept but they weren't smart either. Even the nerds and later the geeks avoided the dorks. A nerd and later a geek could be dorky but they weren't dorks because they were smart.
