I think the thing that keeps me from calling Penny a full-on slut is that she does want a committed relationship. She may not be ready for it, or know 100% what she wants, but she is looking for something real. Sure, she has her flings here and there, but she isn't just going out to "get-some" (her 36 hour weekend aside). If she had ever met the right guy, I think she'd stay with him and be loyal. She was with Kurt for 4 years, so she is capable. If not for that, then yeah, she'd be a slut. As it is, she's a girl looking for love and having fun on her search.

Agreeing with Syd, I also enjoy that Penny is not a "user" or someone who has sex with men to get something out of it. I also love when she tells Alicia she's wrong to use the guys to set up her stuff. It takes good character to not be someone like that, but it's even harder to stand up for people when they're not around.

Given Penny's background/lifestyle and the fact she can't have had much else to do growing up uneducated and possibly bored, I'd say normal 25yr old. Although when Penny talks about the things she did with past boyfriends, I find it very funny. So from my perspective any slutiness is part of the characters humour.

I don't think Sheldon and Amy think she is a slut exactly. Amy said social convention would 'imply' and as Sheldon once said "social convention is stupid". From Sheldon's point of view she's a slave to her lower urges but he's more matter of fact than judgement. And Amy doesn't mind what Penny does. I thought it was fitting she choose to confide in her after the Raj fiasco. I can't see Bernadette being so supportive. She probably would have given her a telling off.

Not to be too critical but Penny was being hypocritical when she said that. She has used the guys for free food and free wifi. They also set up her entertainment cabinet. The girl upstairs didn't take any more advantage of the guys then Penny has. Her problem was that another hot woman was taking advantage of the guys.

Let us get the numbers straights. Sheldon said Penny had been with 130 guys but only slept with 31. Penny disagreed with the 31 partners but not necessarily says there were less.

Let's look at Sheldon's Numbers a little closer. Penny is approx 25. She was with Kurt for 4 years. She started dating at age 14. The leaves 7 years she was single or dating. 30 guys minus Kurt, divided by 7 years equals 4.28 guys a year or just under every 3 months a new guy.

She also made statements, Sex is the best time to break bad news. She told her Boy Friend she was sleeping with his brother and his brother she was sleeping with the boy friend both during sex. She is admitting to sleeping with two guys at the same time.

The PhD with the motorcycle that falls on Leonard, Penny does naked pictures on their like second date when she discovers he is married.

If I were Leonard, I would have a hard time forgiving Penny for sleeping with Raj. However I understand it more as a Pity Penny encounter more than a get even with Leonard & Pryi.

I started this thread but I haven't Voted yet. I have a 25 year old Daughter who is a professional and a former Beauty queen winner. Is she Like a Nun? I hope not, but she was with one guy for 7 years and just started a second relationship after a few years of no boy friend.

i don't think shes a slut - as she cares about who she sleeps with and wants a loving relationship. For example she didn't continue sleeping with that guy who tried to take nude pictures of her and had a wife.

She is though desperate, not for sex (well at times yes, but not always), but for a loving relationship. She has had many failed relationships in the past and just longs to be with the right person. Penny seems to advance fairly quickly in the bedroom area but that does not make her a slut.

We see her as a very happy go lucky individual most of the time, but I think penny may be hiding even more emotions than we can perceive. These emotions in my opinion cause her to do things that she may not be fully conscious off.

I'm thinking of her own admission when Amy comes over that she sleeps around, and her remark that they'd have to 'drive pretty far' to find a place where nobody's seen her naked.

Not judging her, but yeah, she seems to get around, and doesn't seem to think it necessary to wait for a second date to sleep with a guy. Is that the definition of a slut?

I want a SOMEBODY'S, NOT AN EVERYBODY'S. No I don't expect or want a virgin. Yes I want a angel in public and the best way to keep her an angel is to be closed mouth. I tried to raise my children as Ladies and Gentleman. It is not want you do in life, But how you do it.

Penny's Character is loose with her sexual favors. She states a date ends with sex. Or Leonard would get sex after a date no matter if he disagreed with her because it was a date. A SEXUAL Penny was written into the show the first few years as the opposite to the Nerds who didn't get any sex. Then the writers made Leonard the new stud in town.

The above is the most truthful statement in this thread. It is actually what I was trying to find out. What is the Cultural Perception of Penny's morals.

I am a senior citizen who grew up in a more sexually up tight society. I also was single in the 1960's etc. As of today the poll is showing 20% feel penny is the average 25 yr old. 80% feel she is less than pure or Lose with her favors. I think that is a very good distribution of opinions. I feel the Cultural Perception of Penny is normal for a moral society.

I came into this thread ready to call her a slut, but you guys got me thinking. So I did just a little research about the term 'slut' and it sounds like, for centuries, it was not only used to describe someone who would sleep with just about anyone or anything, to also mean a generally unkempt or disgusting person, so I'm changing my vote to no.

Penny may be loose. She may have slept with two different guys at once. She may sleep with random guys she doesn't intend on having relationships with and never expect to hear from them again. But I don't think she's so bad that she would just sleep with anyone or anything that leers at her. She does have some standards.

But if she's this bad now, I dunno, twenty years down the road, a not-as-cute Penny, still phobic of real relationships, might be inclined to loosen even further.

Maybe not quite a full-blown slut yet; but not ruling it out as a distinct future possibility. lol

You are omitting the number of men that Sheldon said had spent the night at her apartment and his hypothesis as to how many men she had sex with. A number that she didn't dispute after thinking about it by the way. It would appear that your standard is that if they don't actually show it visually on the program it didn't happen.

What I meant was summed up in my final paragraph. Penny may have had as many men as is claimed by Sheldon but they have made it all "talk". The producers and writers have carefully edited what is shown as evidence. This is the old double standard at work.

Leonard, who is presented as an almost virginal sexual loser, gets more action then any character on the show. Sometimes you feel he is Alan Harper of "Two and a Half Men" another Lorre character who is scorned as a loser while scoring semi-regularly. We have seen Leonard in sexual situations with:

- Joyce Kim

- Leslie

- Stephanie

- Penny

- Dr. Elizabeth Plimpton

- The rich "grant" patron

- Priya

- Alice (not consummated)

Hurray for Leonard !!

Penny is talked about as if she turned semi-pro in High School but the evidence that we are allowed to see of her sex life is:

The best example of why this dichotomy exists is the reaction at the end of season 4 when the fans thought she slept with Raj. Because Penny is a woman who the fans want with Leonard, they can talk about how slutty she is all they want, but they better not show it.

Kaley was originally turned down for the part of Penny. The writers were looking for a more STREET SMART type girl for a stronger difference in personality types to the Nerds.

The original pilot lead female character was called Katie and was hard core slut (lived with a married man, slept with her mother's new husband). She was going to live with Leonard and Sheldon since she had no place to go. The test audience and CBS hated her, so the sweet, traditional Penny was born for the new pilot.

After the series started the producers started to graft on to Penny some of the characteristic of Katie that they wanted on the original female lead but could not have because of the network's objection. The sweet Nebraska farm girl started to get slutty but in comments only.

They try. This show is from the producing house of "Two and a Half Men". It must kill Chuck Lorre that his original very daring premise was squashed. But when you look at it from the point of view of the writers, they wanted the Leonard/Penny relationship to be very non-traditional and in the face of the viewers, a challenge. But this is American TV, I don't think it would have worked.

Pretty sure she makes loosee goosee sound good enough to be used as the Harvard medical school's term for being a slut. And not even a restraining order can keep Leonard away from Penny, it's just as useful at seperating the strong interaction between all sub atomic particles kinda like Penny and Leonard. Honestly her love life is like Leonard's shower curtain she'll share her covalent holes with other Adams, plus she'll open for anyone who needs to get wet, in a shower.
