What Leonard Needs

It may occur to him to look around for someone new, but ultimately he needs more self confidence and I still think he'll likely end up with Penny regardless. Unless writers have a huge change of heart.

True, even when he dates other women it always feels like a stopgap. Unless both Penny and Leonard decide it's finished and they are just friends, fans will always be half expecting them to get back together, no matter who else they date.

Alice, the comic book girl was perfect for Leonard but oddly, he wants someone who isn't a nerd like him. (hence all his long term girlfriends weren't nerdy, Penny/Priya/Stephanie) I have to agree with Rick on Stephanie, all that crying, yikes!

What Leonard needs is to move to the east coast. Maybe get a job at a university in Boston or something.

That way he can stop mooning over Penny, find some real friends and get on with his life.

The only thing I didn't like about the season finale was the rehashing of the same kind of conflict between leonard and penny.

I think the only way at this point the relationship will grow is by Leonard admitting how much it bothers him that penny will not share his feelings. If she still will not share why she can't commit or share the same feelings, then he needs to move on. If he does, that would be a huge step for him and will probably shock penny to the point that she will finally figure out what she wants.

Agreed. The rehashing of this same conflict is just an attempt by the writers to keep the will they/won't they going, but it's starting to make Penny look overly mean and manipulative and Leonard pathetic and wimpy. The part that I find frustrating is that Penny already had her revelation that Leonard is a great guy and she made a mistake breaking up with him - so for her to continue on this "don't rush me" path kind of doesn't make much sense.

It will be interesting to see how they reconcile Penny's revelation from Season four that she wants Leonard so much after seeing him with Priya and her blase attitude by the end of season five. The hints are that Penny is young and immature and is confused about what she wants but her character is down right illogical now.

They must have some explanation coming in season six or we will have to chalk it up to lazy writing.

I dunno, Penny comes off as confident and tough, but she's very sensitive and deeply offended whenever she interprets someone else's actions as trying to tell her what she can and can't do, -even if it wasn't intended that way.

e.g.#1 Penny tells Leonard the musician is going to sleep on her couch for a few weeks, and Leonard expresses that he doesn't like that, and she goes bat-snot crazy and tells him it's not his business, and she can do whatever the heck she wants.

e.g.#2 Leonard thinks psychics are ridiculous. He does not tell Penny what she can and can't believe, and in fact tries to explain that it's perfectly natural for couples to have different beliefs, and they can discuss them and respect one another, and still love each other, but Penny slams the door in his face.

e.g. #3 When Leonard tries to talk about why Penny can say she loves food, but not him. -A valid question. But Penny interprets this as Leonard trying to control her, and she very defensively tells him that he does not get to tell her when she's ready to say she loves him. -Which is also a completely valid argument, but again unnecessary.

e.g. #4 - The proposal!

Who gets angry over a wedding proposal?

Leonard has stated in the past that he loves her, and they've even discussed that (who knows?) they could get married, they could break up, anything could happen. But when Leonard blurts out what's been on his mind, she freaks out and yells at him and pretty much kicks him out. Why? It's as if Penny is afraid Leonard would try to make her marry him whether she's ready or not.

Leonard has no illusions that he has any measure of control over Penny, so when she reacts, he's left confused and blames himself, not really sure what he did wrong. Penny is left feeling like Leonard doesn't respect her, like he would try to go over her head and make these intimate decisions for her regardless of her opinion (which is likely what all her other boyfriends have done in the past). Leonard trying to confront her again would only aggravate the problems they're already having (I didn't even mention his bug report list to her, or on the 101st episode date, blah blah blah.. lol).

Maybe all Penny needs to hear is that blatant confession from Leonard that sharing his feelings (good or bad) isn't intended to manipulate her, but simply to be honest with her about how he feels, and that he hopes one day she will trust him enough to do the same. He can't control her and he doesn't want to, because he loves her the way she is.

It would appear that Penny is afraid of committing to a long term relationship. Perhaps because of her previous experience with her boyfriend who cheated on her. That was her old boy friend, not Leonard. Her own fear could be the undoing of their relationship.

Be that as it may, Penny still takes Leonard for granted. She believes that she doesn't have to make any effort in the relationship because she seems to be under the impression that Leonard will wait around for ever for her to finally tell him that she loves him, if she ever does. Despite sappy stories about a man waiting all of his life for a women to finally realize that she loves him, usually just before he dies of old age, things usually don't go that way. Leonard seems to strongly desire a loving relationship in his life, and IMO if he comes to the conclusion that Penny will never love him, he will look somewhere else for the relationship he desires. Before that happens though I think that something or someone will give Penny an emotional swift kick in the butt and she will realize that she does love Leonard and will tell him so.

If she doesn't love him now and believes that she never will, then she is doing Leonard a terrible disservice by going out with him. She knows how he feels, she should know what he is looking for, and by giving him false hope she seems to be keeping him on leash for convenience and to keep him out of reach of other women.

Maybe there could be a situation where Sheldon could help penny come to terms with her feelings. He and Penny have a way of being honest with each other without worrying about it. And, it would be cool to see sheldon helping her over personal issues instead of the other way around.

Deep down sheldon loves Leonard and wants him to be happy.

True, although I don't know if he has much insight to help. He would try in his own way. I was thinking maybe Bernadette might be better for this. They haven't done much with the friendship between her and Penny. At times I wonder what these two have in a common at all, but when it comes to affairs of the heart Bernie may be the best character to give Penny something to consider.

I'm sorry to say but I think the writers rushed all aspects of the Leonard and Penny relationship since the start of the series to the point where I care less and less about Penny or Leonard. At this point, I care more about guys like Sheldon, Raj, even Stuart that good things will happen to them than I do about Leonard and Penny.

The reason for that is how the writers have flip flopped their relationship, sped it up then brought it to a screeching hault and speed up and slow down again.

I enjoyed the first season of the show quite a bit. It was a good dynamic between two nerdy guys living across the hall from a beautiful girl and how they tried to connet. Obviously one of them, Leonard, the only one who really intended to 'get with her'. But the concept was believable. At that point, I did root for Leonard to get closer with Penny BUT at the same time whenever he would get a bit closer but Penny would turn up the next day with a new boyfriend I understood it. It made sense. That happens all the time. One guy thinks he's making strides with a girl (potentially out of his league) and the next minute she shows she doesn't feel the same way by showing up with a new squeeze.

But the problem, I think, was that by the end of season 1 Leonard had already secured his first real date with Penny and then through season 2 and 3 started getting mad 'action' not only from Penny but other girls; Leslie, the girl who sleeps around and stayed at their apartment, Dr. Stephanie, etc.

So Leonard went from this awkward nerd who never had much 'going on' to, basically, a player. That's when I stopped caring. I laughed because it's classic 'TV Magic' that girls just start being attracted to Leonard now, out of nowhere.

Then as the seasons progressed there became this back and forth with Leonard and Penny, they would break up and then get back together, break up, back together. Penny always seemed to take Leonard for granted but I 'got it' because I think she was better off with a guy like Zack, only smarter! I feel Penny always looked at Leonard as a friend ... with a few benefits and the reason she starts to have feelings for him is because he's not a total douchebag (just a little bit of a douchebag sometimes) which is a big step up from her past relationships.

So they've basically tossed this whole Leonard and Penny relationship around so much that it doesn't make sense and I've lost most of my reason to actually care about these characters. I now laugh at Leonard and Penny's expense, am happy to see good things happen to Sheldon, Raj and Stuart (not that it ever does) and are more reserved to laugh if it is at the expense of Sheldon, Raj and Stuart.

That's how I feel right now. Anyone else?

I find it interesting that at comic con the writers were saying that they are only three months ahead of us in writing and they don't really know what it going to happen either. They are just making this up as they go along, and they probably don't know what to do with leonard and penny at this point either.

I've been thinking the same thing. Sheldon has so little insight in sex based relationships Penny would be amused at him trying to talk to her about Leonard.

Bernette is the only one that could give Penny any advice and good counsel. They are long time friends and Penny introduced her to her future husband which she, for some reason, appreciates. She has seen Penny and Leonard's trails for years now and she would be able to understand Leonard's frustrations and she also knows Penny's true "love" for him after going thru Penny's Priya torments.

But this all assumes that the writers will try to get Penny's character back on track. They have her completely screwed up at the moment and they realize it which is why they talk about Penny growing up in season six. The "fix" may be in progress.

Agreed; they've messed Penny up big time & I have little patience for Leonard/Penny. Both of them have to mature in some way. Maybe Dr. Beverly will deliver some home truths to them both & they'll start maturing.

The character of Penny is a male TV writer's erotic fantasy:

- A super hot blond who is a "Big Old five" when it comes to initiating sex

- Is "good to go" after a few drinks

- Does not want a commitment of any kind

- and most importantly, does not want to talk about her feelings or yours

Where does this creature come from? After five years she has progressed only slightly, most of that coming in the second half of last season. She has a long way to go before she is anyway recognizable as even a normal "sitcom" female much less any average woman in "real life". That Leonard finds this "girl" the only one for him makes you question just how smart he is.

They need maturity fixing badly next season.

...and Leonard has been made a traditional sitcom "woman".

Chuck Lorre has explored "Penny-Like" characters before; Jane Deaux, Dharma's friend in "Dharma and Greg" and Jeri Ryan's character Sherri on "Two and a half men". These were women who were players and did not want commitment and drove the men who pursued them crazy for having this traditional male ethic. But these women were not the central female on the show like Penny is.

Penny is suppose to be a sympathetic character that the fans root for to be with Leonard. What she has been turned into now is debatable.

Very true, the roles are reversed but it does actually happen in real life.

Also would I be far off in saying Sheldon has become an very unexpected female fantasy? A male who has no interest in outward appearance, only the mind. Sheldon is unspoilt and incapable of deceit and to top it off seems to require rescuing from his sexual and emotional repression.

Normally you see the "whipped" male relationship which is quite common and was satirized on the show this season. But the women who dominate those couples are not commitment phobic nor unwilling to talk about feelings, just the opposite is true. Think Bernie and Howard (who shows far more backbone than Leonard).

Are women attracted to asexual men? It seems teen girls sure are.

That explains a lot. In fact, that explains everything. Thanks.

The clues were all there:

Penny: "My dad wanted a boy... I wasn't slugger anymore."

Wyatt: Thinks all Penny needs is the "love of a good man" to straighten her out.

And how about that "man to man" talk about respect from Wyatt to Penny after she lied about Leonard?

Penny lives alone, Likes football, drinking & partying to all hours, random hookups, drives a beater, works a menial job but tells people she has a glamorous career to impress them.

Penny hooked up with Zack for a few days for New Year's, just to dump him later, because she didn't want to be alone.

Slept with Raj, "When they were on a break"

Doesn't like to talk about relationship issues (truth or dare)

There are probably more examples, but on to Leonard:

He has a roommate and a group of friends with whom he discusses and analyzes his relationships.

Wants good relationship with mother, but doesn't have one.

If all men were like him, humanity couldn't survive.

Penny "had him at hello"

Tries to "fix" Penny when the opportunity arises.

Does things he doesn't really like or understand to "work on" the relationship with Penny. (football, read Eat Pray Love, go to psychic..)

So this is what it's like when the paradigm shifts.:icon_eek::icon_idea:

So this is what it's like when the paradigm shifts.:icon_eek::icon_idea:

Great analysis of the dynamics of their flipped relationship.

Penny and Leonard have been mutating to the original concept of their relationship from the original, failed pilot of 2006 written by Lorre and Prady. For those who have not seen the never broadcast pilot, the setup was this:

Sheldon and Leonard are returning to their apartment when they see a pretty woman sitting on the sidewalk talking on her cell phone to her mother. The woman is trying to go home because she has no place to stay since she left her boyfriend, who it turns out was married. Her mother refuses to let her come back since she has slept with her mother's current husband. Talk about hardcore!

Leonard listens in on the woman's conversation and is moved by her tears when she hangs up. The woman, whose name is Katie, is invited by Leonard, despite Sheldon's warnings, to have a meal with them and later to move in to their apartment for "a few days". Katie meets Leonard and Sheldon's equally nerdy scientist friend Gilda, who has designs on Leonard and tells Katie to make sure she know Leonard is off-limits. Katie takes a shower and comes back in the living room and flashes Gilda by opening up the front of her towel. Gilda is a bit befuddled but not appalled at all. Gilda's character will be the genesis for Amy Farrah Fowler. As she tries to kindle her relationship with Leonard, she even admits to having slept with Sheldon at a Star Trek conventions. Talk about a change in series design!

Leonard later confronts Katie about how her problems are caused by her bad choices in life. Katie reacts by drawing a giant penis on the whiteboard in the apartment and calling it Leonard and later moves out. Leonard goes down to the department store where she works and apologizes and Katie moves back in delighted that she gets free room and board and does not have to sleep with anybody. She then convinces Leonard, Sheldon and Gilda to go out drinking and dancing with her and makes fun of their spastic dance moves.

This first pilot was a disaster, Chuck Lorre calls it his great failure. Test audiences hated Katie's character passionately, and the brass at CBS would have none of it even if it did come from the shop of "Two and a Half Men". Having seen this thing, it really is 22 minutes of hell, like a very bad update of "Three's Company".

Lorre gets a do over, well because he's Chuck Lorre. In the new pilot, Gilda becomes Howard and Raj and Katie (Amanda Walsh) becomes Penny (Kaley). Instead of a semi-pro slut, LA street chick in her mid-twenties, we get a 21 year old Nebraska farm girl who in the first episode seems as naive as, well a mid-western farm girl. CBS and test audiences loved the changes and the pilot is sold. In most of the first season Penny is a sweet, open and understanding object of Leonard's affection who would never do anything to hurt him. She is the one who gets taken advantage of by men.

Since the start of the first season, Penny has been taking on more of the characteristics of Katie as Lorre and Prady have gotten past the guards, so to speak. I understand why this was done practically, since if Penny had stayed the way she was created to get the new pilot passed she would be married to Leonard by now.

Now the character is this strange hybrid of two concepts that the writers seem to change almost weekly. I don't know where they are going and frankly, since they don't create story arcs for each season but make up directions only a few months in advance of air dates, I don't think they know either.

To me Sheldon is the ladies' 1# choice as

1) he's the obvious Alpha male (smartest & tallest).

2) He's not asexual, he like Spock, thinks he's above mere emotions. That's a big challenge to women & a turn on (just read all the Shenny fanfic).

3) Finally Sheldon really likes to talk; a male who willingly will talk endlessly with a woman is another big fantasy...lol

The idea that Mr. "sing soft kitty to me", "I can't drive a car", and "I have to do laundry tonight, it's Saturday" is the Alpha male of any group is frightening. He gets his way by throwing temper tantrums and extortion. His appearance of having control over the group has been more of a case of the others not caring enough to put up with him if he doesn't get his way. I have noticed that as time passes they rest of the group is less and less willing to put up with him. A good example is when Leonard started seeing Priya over at Raj's apartment, the rest of the group met there instead of hanging out where Sheldon was. That would seem to mean that Leonard and not Sheldon is now the Alpha male. Still a sad commentary of the group.
