What Leonard Needs

Recommended Posts

Leonard has that same baffled look on his face with Amy, as he has when Sheldon talks sometimes. Not to say that it couldn't work, if they hung out more though. Interesting…! I'm not sure if he gets Amy, no one really does. Sheldon comes the closest but that might be because he's so unusual he barely notices she is. Still Kaley was quoted as saying she wants the show to make it to 10 seasons! 10!!!! Overkill if you ask me, but who knows what will happen by then!

OK, now that Penny has told Leonard she loves him I don't want Leonard to show Penny insecurity again. If he gets a little insecure, he can discuss witb his Bro's but never in front of Penny again.

wow, spot on BangerMain; I have never met a real girl like this either; gay or straight. Penny is most definitely a man.

Some of the best times are just cuddling or a hug. It would drive me crazy.

I thought, "I don't know. Foreplay?" was hilarious. :D

I agree though, they should have some kind of deep conversation in this area. How they can handle that on the show without it being "MELODRAMA!" is another question. It's one of those things that should probably happen off-camera.

I'm really starting to feel that Leonard would be happiest with...Amy. I know it seems odd; but she's just like his mother but warm. She wants human contact, sex, all of it and they have so much in common. Remember what a nice time he had at the wedding with her? I think they'd be a happier match than L/P.

He had a nice time at the wedding? He moped and pouted through most of it. And who is this warm Amy you speak of? She's Sheldon with a sex drive. She is too much like his mother. Direct to the point of being mean. This is one pairing I just can't see.

That is so right. Amy IS Leonard's mother in character (by design):

- A Neurobiologist of some renown.

- Sexually repressed (in the beginning)

- Dismissive of all people she finds inferior

- Sexual attracted to Sheldon.

I wonder what will happend if Amy finds out the little "secret" that Sheldon, Penny and Dr. Beverly agreed not to tell?

Do I see a budding Leonard/Amy shipper? :)

You have a point. But I'm too much in love with Sheldon/Amy's weird relationship to really want the (possibly smoother?) one between Leonard and Amy!

More likely a shenny shipper looking to put some space between LP

I kind of see L/A as endgame & watch out: I see Sheldon winding up with Penny. I know it sounds weird, but Penny is smart & practical like his Mom and deals very well with Sheldon (they even fight amusingly) & they have tons of chemistry.

I know I too enjoy the weirdness of the Shamy it's so fun & different; I can see them both maturing socially together and then finding their eventual mates as endgame. Amy can be warm, she ran over to Penny's to support her 'bestie' when she found out about Priya, she cries when she's left out of the girls' group, she wants to cuddle. Leonard himself said Amy was fun & that's when Sheldon hit him with the toy train.

I have the feeling that this could be like at the "The Wonder Years" Finale ... Kevin and Winnie became best friends, and made their romantic lives with other people.

What I say is that not only Leonard but also Sheldon, need someone to take them out of their comfort zone.

What Leonard needs isn't to end up with someone just like his mother, Amy, not saying that ending up with Penny would be any better or worse. Bring back Priya!!! She was hot and put Sheldon, Penny and Amy all in their rightful place's. She was beautiful and successful something they all lacked.

As for Penny ending up with Sheldon, unlikey, because you know thats what Penny is hoping for in a relationship no passion, no kissing and to quote Sheldon no coitus.

Still, there would have to be some compelling reason (read: money) for the producers to build up the fan interest over years to see a pay-off for relationships to then pull the rug out from under them at the end. They have to sell these episodes for future years of syndication and they don't want the vast majority of the viewers remembering how pissed they were about the final end game.

Also, they wouldn't have invested so much time /money in writing & developing Amy's character, making her endearing and warming up the fans on her relationship with Sheldon for what? to turn her into a stepping stone for a Sheldon/Penny relationship? if that's what they would have wanted to do, they could have used anyone, a Ramona, or a Dr Plimpton and voila. But that's not the case.

Also, I don't see Sheldon as someone who would shift his affections to someone else just like that. Sheldon is not your typical TV character at all.

Amy does take Sheldon out of his confort zone, but she does it very differently than Penny. She provokes him and he comes out of that comfort. It's like Mary said "he's like a baby deer, you have to let him come to you". Amy does this, she challenges him, but on his own terms, not by yelling at him (which is mostly what Penny does).

I hope so!!

I think writters forget this, when we see Sheldon being ridiculed and betrayed by his "friends", or, even when he acts like a clown.

I love the Pilot !!!! :icon_exclaim:

They have invested so much in Amy's character that not only did Mayim get an Emmy nomination, but it can be argured that the Shamy is now the big driving force on TBBT, replacing Leonard and Penny.

agreed. And by what Chuck Lorre & Bill Prady keep saying in interviews, I'm sure they know they hit gold with the Sheldon/Amy relationship

Oh I agree the Shamy is here to stay; it would be too much for the fans who've invested. And I also agree Shamy has replaced Leonard and Penny; they are much more interesting and different and amusing. They obviously inspire the writers. I just think Amy would be better for poor Leonard.

I don't think she is, Amy can be warm, but not as warm as what Leonard needs to compensate for his mother's coldness, but even if she were, characters are like people, and people most of the times, do not end up with who "would be better for" but who the heart wants. Otherwise, relationships would be far more easier than they are in reality.

Totally agree with you HeWolf, the idea of Leonard and Amy is, IMHO, horrible. So, since Leonard likes human contact and Amy is eager to experience it, they should hook up? Sounds awful for me. As Moonbase said, Leonard reacts as puzzled with Amy as he is with Sheldon, he just doesn't get her. She had said several times she finds him "boring" and not attractive at all.

I don't know why people focus so much in Amy's vocal interest for sex and human contact and ignore all of her other needs, those needs only Sheldon can cater. She likes intellectual companionship and has those quirky and crazy ideas and plans only Sheldon can get and follow. She couldn't sleep with an stupid guy, doesn't matter how hot he was, she was able to reject a potentially warm and "normal" relationship with a guy who would probably adore her as Stuart and prefer an asexual one with the guy she really likes.

I don't like when people say her situation is "sad" and that she is miserable in her relationship, because she is not! She chose to be there, she has other options, but she is with Sheldon because she wants to.

Their relationship is quite fulfilling as it is, with only the sex and contact aspect lacking, but Sheldon doesn't want her to leave him, he doesn't want her to be with other men and he's even slowly coming to terms with the fact that he may want to have physical contact with her too (his reactions to her experiment and his hand-holding at the end of last season are big proof of this), so, it's just a matter of time and adjustment from both parts.

And regarding Leonard, Dr. Stephanie, (Priya not so much, because she didn't really care for him), that Alice girl, they were potentially good partners for him, but not Amy. When had he showed any interest in finding a woman like his mother? Actually, in episode 100 his subconsicious in Sheldon's form told him he liked Penny because he had always looked for someone completely opossed to his mother!

I agree. Sheldon and Amy have been written as perfect for each other in so many ways, just not in the physical way so far - and from the direction they've taken, it seems quite likely that Sheldon will come round in that matter, too. He just needed the impetus of a fulfilling intellectual companionship, followed by a deep emotional attachment and dependence (which he's demonstrated for Amy many times), to start feeling the stirrings of romantic/physical attraction.

He may move at his own pace, but I don't think Amy is in a hurry; as Sarah says, she has consciously chosen to be with him because she has feelings for him. It's not as if she had a dearth of opportunities for physical gratification or for a relationship with a more 'normal' person. But she doesn't want that, she wants Sheldon. And about Leonard, while she too enjoyed his company in the latter part of the wedding, she made it clear to Penny that 'he doesn't get my motor running'. Amy wouldn't know how to play games or hedge about such things; she definitely meant it.

I don't think she is, Amy can be warm, but not as warm as what Leonard needs to compensate for his mother's coldness, but even if she were, characters are like people, and people most of the times, do not end up with who "would be better for" but who the heart wants. The character of Penny is a male TV writer's erotic fantasy:

- A super hot blond who is a "Big Old five" when it comes to initiating sex

- Is "good to go" after a few drinks

- Does not want a commitment of any kind

- and most importantly, does not want to talk about her feelings or yours

wow, spot on BangerMain; I have never met a real girl like this either; gay or straight. Penny is most definitely a man.

...and Leonard has been made a traditional sitcom "woman".

Penny is suppose to be a sympathetic character that the fans root for to be with Leonard. What she has been turned into now is debatable.

That explains a lot. In fact, that explains everything. Thanks.

The clues were all there:

Penny: "My dad wanted a boy... I wasn't slugger anymore."

Wyatt: Thinks all Penny needs is the "love of a good man" to straighten her out.

And how about that "man to man" talk about respect from Wyatt to Penny after she lied about Leonard?

Penny lives alone, Likes football, drinking & partying to all hours, random hookups, drives a beater, works a menial job but tells people she has a glamorous career to impress them.

Penny hooked up with Zack for a few days for New Year's, just to dump him later, because she didn't want to be alone.

Slept with Raj, "When they were on a break"

Doesn't like to talk about relationship issues (truth or dare)

There are probably more examples, but on to Leonard:

He has a roommate and a group of friends with whom he discusses and analyzes his relationships.

Wants good relationship with mother, but doesn't have one.

If all men were like him, humanity couldn't survive.

Penny "had him at hello"

Tries to "fix" Penny when the opportunity arises.

Does things he doesn't really like or understand to "work on" the relationship with Penny. (football, read Eat Pray Love, go to psychic..)

So this is what it's like when the paradigm shifts.:icon_eek::icon_idea:

Ok, if spoilers are to be believed, this is true. The plot thins.

To begin with, I don't see where Leonard has ever tried to "fix" Penny as much as help her solve a problem that she herself has vocalized. To paraphrase, she said that she felt stupid around Leonard because he was so educated and he tried to help her solve her problem by getting her information on some local colleges. If SHE had not mentioned her feeling of inadequacy because of her lack of education, he would not have brought it up.

I keep hearing that Priya did not care for Leonard and that is incorrect IMO. Frankly I don't see how she tried to "change" him anymore then Penny did, she was just more successful about it then Penny was. Maybe that says something about Penny. After Leonard and her had been separated for an extended period of time she slept with her old boyfriend. Frankly I find that more understandable then breaking up with someone because they said that they loved you, hang around him and being jealous because he is now with someone else who makes you feel like a "toothless Okie", get back together with him, get all bent out of shape again when he tells you that he loves you, and start considering breaking up with him again because you are bored. Just guessing, but I think that they will have another hot woman show up who is attracted to Leonard and then all of a sudden Penny decides that she really does love Leonard. If that is Penny "caring" for Leonard, God help him if she hated him.

If this is the route that the writers are going to take the Penny character I hope Leonard finds someone else and tells Penny to hit the road. I also hope that Sheldon gets closer to Amy because he certainly deserves much better then someone like Penny if the writers are crazy enough to go in that direction.

Amen! Amen!

We know the writers are not going to break up Leonard and Penny because this is their starting premise as totally illogical as it has become now. What bugs me is how Leonard has become so socially neutered. I get it that they think it's cute that Penny has the traditional male role and Leonard the female role in their relationship but it makes no sence how this has happended.

Leonard has been with at least six different women who are either smarter, more accomplished and even as hot as Penny, yet he is still as unconfident and awkarded as ever around her. When has a guy who has had that kind of success not learned a thing or two about how to interface and relate to women? How can a man who has had sex with a woman probably 50 times be so surprised and overwhelped that he has nailed her for the 51st? In what world is this man not able to see or remember that he has proven other options available to him if his current partner is unsure of their relationship? How can he not know from previous experience that all he has to do is mention he may go elsewhere to find her attitude will quickly change?

Sheldon once made the conjecture that Leonard seemed under the assumption that Penny is the only woman in the world for him. That seems to be what holds the Leonard/Penny relationship together.

I not only agree but would like to point out that after the success that Leonard has had with other women, all more successful in life then her, where does Penny get the nerve to keep jerking Leonard around in the manner that she does? To me it appears that she actually has a very low opinion of him and just keeps him around for what she can get out of him until someone "better" shows up. What she fails to comprehend is that if someone better did show up, he would only be interested in her for what HE could get out of HER, then he would go looking for someone better.

Taking the six season spoilers in account, the fact that Penny considered breaking up with him because their stable and happy love for each other was "boring", as you mentioned, shows a woman with unjustified hubris or she's just cosmically stupid. We got hints in season five that she considered Leonard unable to break away from her and seemed quite pleased to tell him and his friends that.

I can't understatnd why she now feels she is superior to Leonard or that there is someone who is coming along who is better. The entire reason for her being with Leonard is that she could NOT do better, even her father told Leonard that and gave several examples and predicted her likely tragic fate if Leonard gave up on her. She admitted in season two she was afraid that Leonard would dump HER when he found out how uneducated and unaccomplished she was. She even told Leonard in season three that he had "ruined" her ability to go out with the brainless hunks that were her stock and trade. She saw in season four that Leonard could do much, much better than her and she nearly went crazy about it.

I still am hopefully that the writers will start fixing this mess in the coming season.

I still don't like Priya, but I'm not going to argue that Penny's not much better for Leonard, -if at all at this point.

What does it really matter if Penny does become a successful actress? Leonard already has her on a pedestal, I see this only making things worse. And if she's looking for someone more exciting, she'll find it at work, and break up with Leonard on the phone where she doesn't have to see his "puppy dog eyes".

Here's hoping these allusions she made to "being in love before, and it wasn't like this" will eventually erupt into some cathartic realization that the electric, exciting, lustful "love" she experienced before can't compare to the warmth and long suffering devotion Leonard has undeserving given her all these years. And hopefully she will realize this right into his arms.

Everyone lives happily ever after. .. somewhat repeating the end of season 1. lol

This.

And I'm still rooting for them. I hope to god the writers are hearing or seeing the same things being said here, so they can work the whole darn thing out.
