Leonard & Penny?

Well it has been a long time since I have visited this site. My life is pretty demanding these days. But it is Sunday afternoon, a cold winter's day, I have a lovely fire going a mug of home made soup in my hand and not much else to do. So I thought I would stop by.

While perusing youtube the other day I viewed one of the most recent episodes of Howard/Bernadette's wedding and Leonard/Penny sleeping together again and yet again falling apart. In my opinion this relationship is and always has been a trainwreck. It baffles me how the Lenny fans see this as anything else. Please do not think I am trying to antagonize people I really am not. I am just trying to understand the writer's thought processes, if these two are the main romantic interest in the show, why they are written so badly when they do come together?

Leonard and Penny sleep together during which he proposes and she blows up. Does she love him? I really don't know but find it hard to believe she does. For instance she refers to them 'having sex' frequently. As does Leonard use the term sex. They don't seem to view the act as making love. It is just a physical release for both of them. It is also usually preceded by some awkward banter and followed by the same. I would like to see them cuddling on the couch some time. I don't mean making out, I mean just holding each other and being one. I cannot see how either party have secretly held, deep abiding love for the other when they behave the way they do. One would really think after five years they would know their feelings for each other and if they have a future together.

The only solution I can see to this on again, off again painful scenario is to end it completely. I would like to see both of them in happy relationships with other people and be able to maintain their friendship. No guys, I am not heading in the Shenny direction, don't think that for a moment. I just want to see both characters happy, which neither seem to be when they are together. Their childish little sniping at each other during their friend's wedding is an unbelievable demonstration of how bad they are for each other. They only seem to bring out the worst in each other.

Please writers in season 6, end this misery once and for all.

The writers seem to enjoy writing L/P as an awkward uneasy couple. I wish they would show more personnel moments involving L/P such as cuddling together on the couch, playing games together and going to dinner with just the two of them. However, the writers want to complicate L/P's relationship by having them do things to each other that make us the fans scratch our head sometimes.

I don't want L/P to break up again as they are my 2 favorite characters (yes there are some of us out there who don't watch the show because of Sheldon).

I agree, Penny has never cooked a meal for Leonard, like she did with Sheldon. And why not? He's her boyfriend! The writers seem to enjoy driving a wedge between this couple more than bringing them together. It's like they have much more faith in this union than they are giving their audience. I don't want Leonard and Penny to split either but the dynamic needs to change. People are tired of their relationship staying in limbo.

I think that it is pretty obvious that where they are going with the relationship is that Penny will come to terms with her feelings and eventually tell Leonard that she loves him. There is no other character on the show that even comes close to being a better match for Penny then Leonard, and her, him. At first glance Penny may not look like a good choice, but as time has passed both Penny and Leonard have grown emotionally, and when they are alone just talking the mutual attraction between them becomes apparent.

I think that in season 6 we will see Penny telling Leonard that she loves him. It may be after something happens that makes Penny wonder if she might lose Leonard or maybe not. In any case, one of the main pillars of the storyline has always been the genius scientist who is enamored and eventually gets the beautiful and street smart girl, and the problems that they will have to overcome due to their different interests and personalities.

I agree on all points.

Being an American sitcom, the writers will not deviate too far from the pattern of the traditional romantic story arc or the viewers will be ticked that they did not get the payoff they expected from their investment in viewing time. They are going to make the path bumpy of course, but season six is the right time to have them start working on their relationship for the long term.

Penny has to change the most. I think she pretty much has come to the conclusion that Leonard is the one she needs but she is an insecure, immature 26 year old who does not like to think beyond her work schedule at the Cheesecake Factory. And Leonard has ceded all the power to chose a direction for their future to this woman-child who has not a clue what to do with it.

Leonard is the logical one to take charge and get her going in some direction (that includes her career) and she has hinted strongly that she wants him to do this but by nature he is not assertive enough to confront the inevitable childish outburst that would follow even though he should know by now its mainly bluff. He seems to have forgotten that Penny follows him when she knows he's right (the musician ex-boy friend who wanted to stay in her apartment in season three or the platonic date in season five when she told him that she likes when he takes charge).

I'm sure that the producers of the show will not keep them from maturing and advancing in season six. The fact that they are still a couple after the stress points of the last two episodes is a great sign.

Having Leonard and Penny in a relationship full of conflict is really what the show is all about now.

I think they have made it very clear that this is now a show about relationships - the humour and geek culture are all but gone.

Their relationship will remain a train wreck until the end of the series due to the fact that most viewers want this. They want conflict. Why do you think shows like the Kardashians are popular? People want to see people doing stupid things. Usually it is stupid people doing stupid things. Now they have a show about supposedly smart people doing stupid things.

Woo hoo - ratings!

I've seen no real growth in their relationship at all, I hope that there is evidence of this before the writers "force" these two together. I even think the 100th episode was really a let down, and why would Leonard ask her to marry him, really why did he? Show more of the geek culture and more about their work and let Penny and Leonard slowly come together over the next two years, don't force it.

I agree 100%, This is a TV show not real life.

Does this mean you don't want them to have good ratings? If they don't they get cancelled.

Exactly. People complain "oh it isn't about geeks and science anymore". Um, it really never was. Go back and watch the first season. You can't want it all about science stuff and geek stuff all the time and expect it to survive television.

It was 59th in the ratings in season 1 and 42nd in season 2. It was heading to the scrap heap. And those are the years that the Science and Geek lovers think of as the "glory" days.

Even then it was only light in relationships because they only had one permanent female cast member. There were always women that were there only not continuous.

"4ofN" has every right to complain about the now unneeded conflict being pumped into the L/P relationship. That is getting sillier each season. And from what a producer has said, Penny will start to deeply analyse her relationship with Leonard. Here is a girl whose thoughts on relationships are going from three tequila shooters and a condom to Charlotte Brontë. Oh, My!

Do they stay together for a long time or do they split up again and is there going to be more series?

If Penny and Leonard DO get married I predict it will be the beginning of the end. In the past, sitcoms that have the main couple get married (I don't think Howard or Raj as the the stars {DON'T SHOOT}). Just look at the past. I Dream Of Jeannie, Mork And Mindy, just to name a couple, ended after they got married.

L/P have been replaced by the Shamy as the couple that moves the needle now.

They can allow the original twosome to march toward the alter with only a few bumps and few would be upset now. In fact, it would most likely be welcomed as merciful.

But Sheldon and Amy, that has to last as the weird wonders until the series ends

Leonard and Penny are not in any place to be getting married. If they did any time soon, their decision would be way too rushed and definitely not believable.

That's for sure. And I don't expect them to be made ready very quickly this season. I just wish they would let them start to work on their issues because these false starts then stops are making them irritating as the prime couple.

I can not see them getting married this season, period. Unless they go every single episode of this season without a fight (which is doubtful, considering how they left off season 5 and being at the first taping of season 6 today), I would not be on board at all.

I can't see their relationship getting to the point where they are ready for marriage. I think both of them have some personal growing to do first. As far as that goes, I don't think that Howard and Bernadette were really ready for marriage either.

Yeah, I have to agree with you on both counts. Howard moved in with Bernadette, at one point but she sent him back to his mother when he expected her to take him to the dentist and do everything his mother does. That didn't get sorted out at all, next minute they are getting married.

Leonard and Penny are not ready for marriage, not sure where these two are going. Next season will be the clincher I think.
