Ausiello just posted these little spoilers:

Question: Anything on The Big Bang Theory? —Alex

Ausiello: Hope you’re sitting down, because I have some jaw-dropping news for you: Penny is getting a job. A job as an actress. I hear she’s going to get cast in a small community theater production of A Streetcar Named Desire. Hey, it’s something. Meanwhile, Mayim Bialik told us at the SAG Awards that there are “a couple big Sheldon/Amy episodes,” coming up. “I’ve actually been surprised how much the writers and producers want to push this relationship,” she shared. “Amy wants more, and we see what Sheldon thinks."

While I love the idea of Penny doing actress work, a community theatre production probably shouldn't count as a job. Community theatres don't pay the actors (I will note that occasionally an Equity (the equivalent of the SAG0-AFTRA for theatre) member will do a community theatre production. But that actor will usually sign over the check to the theatre. Most community theatres run on tight budgets and simply can't afford to cast someone who has to be paid.

Does it have to be a paying gig to count as a job?  Volunteer work is still called work.

Yeah, pretty much.

Volunteer work is still called work.

Community theatres have full-time paid positions. It's those people's job. Most of the volunteer work is done by people who have other, paid, full time jobs, if they are working. In the case of Penny doing a show there, she would still have to keep her waitressing job at the Cheesecake Factory.

Fair enough.  It may not count as a job, then, but it's still a part and I could see it being a big deal to an aspiring actor.  (Female thespians are called actors rather than actresses now, right?)

Either term, as far as I've seen, can be used.

Whether or not she gets paid, it's still a gig that she can list on her resume, which could help her get an audition for something more prominent.

I agree Phantagrae. They can't all of a sudden give her this big acting role after not even mentioning her career for so long. This could be the start of them reestablishing her dream. This part could be a stepping stone to more solid parts in commercials or TV. Perhaps a director or producer will happen to see her perform. At the very least, as Phantagrae stated, Penny can use it on her resume and her agent can utilize it for possible shots at an audition.

Guest I'm not dead Cheryl

Penny in a Tenessee Williams play? I kinda feel she will suck at it, specially if they make her play Blanche, that's a HARD role to play. Stella could be more of her range though, but she would still be bad. I kinda imagine her going through her lines with Leonard's help. And Leonard yelling "STELAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA" LOL I wanna see it now!

btw: Streetcar Named Desire is my favorite play ever next to" Forbiddent to Commit Suicide in the Spring", so it will be cool.

I see your logic but for some reason that seems too obvious. I have a feeling that she will be good and the rest of the cast will be awful. We'll see.

Have we ever been shown how good or bad Penny is at acting ? I can only recall three parts she's had over the past five and a half years : one was in the play about Anne Frank (the one above the bowling alley), one was in Rent I think, and the last one was in the commercial.

From the Rent episode, we know that Penny cannot sing (I don't remember if they mentioned anything about her dancing). But I do not think that we were ever told if she can or cannot act. Though I could see why the writers would choose to make her a bad actress (it is way funnier when people fail), I sort of hope she isn't. I may be overly sentimental but I'd like her to have something she CAN do better than the others, a talent that is hers... Other than being very beautiful and very badass.

Though I have to say the choice of A Streetcar Named Desire is quite strange : it is one of the most intelligent but depressing plays ever written. It is so very dark (admitedly, the Anne Frank reference was pretty tough too but it was immediately "defused" by the whole bowling alley thing and turned into a joke). The female roles are so tragic and the end so hopeless. A Cat on a Hot Tin Roof would have been less of a challenge to include/refer to in a comedy : it ends well-ish and there are funny moments. But A Streetcar... Whether Penny plays Blanche or Stella, it is not a happy adventure. She might have some loose connections with Blanche (she enjoys her drink, has proven she can have very questionable taste in men, can be quite lonely and depressed. And she once depended on the kindness of strangers... to get her TV back !) and it could be a weird/funny experience to portray pregnant Stella but still.

Wait and see I suppose.

Though I imagine I could obsess over what Leonard will probably obsess over : Who's going to play Stanley (and how good-looking is he exactely) ?

Interesting, so the girl from the V-day ep will be back in other episodes. Mmmm. But how is Raj going to be able to talk to her? Is he going to be drunk all the time? I'm not sure whether I prefer this or Alex though... I kind of thought Alex could have worked.

Maybe meeting this girl will be the thing that makes Raj look into some kind of therapy--or Amy tries some kind of monkey-brain experiment on him, or Bernie tries experimental pharmaceuticals (although theyve kind of done that sort of thing before...)

At least it will give Kunal something to work with.  I hope!

I really have mixed fellings about Raj finding a girlfriend. They are introducing more new characters along with Stuart having a larger roll in the show. There is only 22 +/- minutes to work with. We are seeing less and less of the main 3 to begin with add another relationship and you just cut down that even more.

Thanks for the link!  I just missed Simon last night.  I was on a bus coming from an out-of-town gig and the bus had TV on it, so I saw the beginning of Craig (with no sound), but then I must have been driving from the bus to my apt while he was on, because when I got home it was the comedian girl they had at the end.

I'm digging Simon's "winkle-picker" shoes! :D

I love love love Kate Micucci.  Never watched Raising Hope but she played Gooch on Scrubs.  Also, she's half of the comedy team Garfunkel and Oates.  The other half of the duo is Riki Lindhome, who you'll recognize.  JP said in an interview that he liked having her on the show.  (Warning:  there's profanity in the video.)
