goldenorb
Bob Newhart had it in his contract that his character in "The Bob Newhart Show" would never have children, which was a smart move. It was a show by and for adults, and children would have been a distraction, and detracted from the show's premise. Re: Sheldon's Memaw. She's never been seen, and Jim Parsons has stated that he would like Betty White in the role, but I keep seeing actress Elmarie Wendel in the role. She's probably best known as Mrs. Dubcek in Third Rock from the Sun. She's the right age (early 80s), and she and Laurie Metcalf could sorta pass for mother and daughter. What do you think? Chaliceinnana
I would be extremely upset if anyone decided to breed on this show. Okay, last episode all three ladies (4 if Raj gets his act together) admit they are knocked up... That will be fine.

Tensor
A Bernadette pregnancy that plays out in the final season would be awesome. Or if Melissa got pregnant sometime in the next couple of years( I don't know if her and her husband are planning any, but just saying if they are) it could be written in. Seeing Howard at home with a kid could be rather humorous. Edited February 21, 2013 by Tensor

Wow, I don't know if I could stand them being on and off for three more years. I think it would get real old and kill the show. I hope the writers aren't thinking that way. I hope the writers aren't thinking that way. I agree...I hope the writers are not in agreement with him on that either. I think they have had plenty of turmoil and back and forth as it is. I think he was concerned they would get boring, but what he suggested can get just as old and boring to where people no longer root or care as well. Let them have different challenges...jobs, schedules, family, etc. to cause issues, but work together through them.
koops
Totally agree, I hope the writers aren't thinking that way. Yes, you can give them bump along the road but I do agree that on-again-off-again relationship stories get tiring and predictable. Everyone knows they're going to end up together in the end, it's jus so silly. And it would be such a breath of fresh air for them to find other ways of keeping L/P interesting. There have just been articles mentioning how good the show has been with long-term relationships, in a way no other show has done. I think one of the most realistic things about the show is that these are not the kind of people that would have on-off relationships and hook up with various people, they would stick to the ones they have. That's what sets them apart from characters on other shows where everyone has 30 love interests per season.

BlackWhiteRose
Thank god that the writers and producers are the big bosses and they decide whats happening. I mean TBBT is not a soap opera. And I don`t want it to turn into it. And I want the show to stay unique and not a copy from another comedyseries. Thats all.
koops
Actually, re-reading this, maybe Johnny didn't really mean that he wants them to break up and get together again over and over, maybe he simply meant that he doesn't want things to just cruise smoothly for the next 3-4 years. Like we said, there are lots of ways to drag it out, it doesn't have to be a break-up.
Chiara
Mr. Galecki is an actor; it only makes sense that he would be partial to the more drama-filled path because it is bound to be the most satisfying to play. Characters who struggle are "meatier" than their happy go-lucky, perfectly functional counterparts. But like spook pointed out, he did not actually advocate for them to break up and go back together and break up... and so on and so forth until the last episode. He merely wants the dysfunction to live on. It is after all a sitcom. But let's face it : Howard and Bernadette are now as married as can be and they're still pretty dysfunctional. Commitment/progress does not spell the end of interesting problems. I do not expect Leonard and Penny to get married/have babies together in the near or even quite-distant future. They have way too many issues to work through (Penny's career, Leonard's co-dependent relationship with Sheldon, Penny's fear everything will go sour, Leonard's jealousy, Penny's self-doubt) before any ot that can happen. But they do not need to break up to sort those out. They've managed pretty well this season so far : they've fought more than ever and yet. Still not broken up. On a side note: in the video, there is a mention to a commentator who would want Penny and Leonard to break up because they're "too functional to be believable"... I worry for this person, on a human level. Are we to infere s/he simply cannot believe that people do sometimes find themselves in happy relationships ? This makes me sad for him/her. Maybe we should organise a telethon or something.
BlackWhiteRose
Yeah spook thats a good point. As long as Leonard and Penny don`t break up I`m fine with everything. And you brought up some good points too Chiara.

That's what sets them apart from characters on other shows where everyone has 30 love interests per season. This is so true. People try and compare this with Friends but I always thought the characters in Friends would have no problem sleeping with any other character in their group, they had no real respect for each other. The characters in TBBT are real friends and actually care for each other, that is why viewers like them. Penny and Leonard don't have to break up or immediately get married for the show to be interesting. They just told each other they love each other so they could easily go for a season or two just being together, with no stupid commitment issues. Also they could be engaged for over a season because I have know several people that didn't get married till a year or two after they were engaged. The God Particle
Really think Johnny meant that as a couple they are going to be working on their various Issues and quite frankly it is About Damn Time! So much for our beloved Couple has been spent on Penny being afraid of commitment and this last episode showed how much she really had grown from her past overreactions and freak-outs to being snarky (and bitchy), ruining Leonard's evening and being called on it. When she was she admitted her hang-ups and acted like an adult about it, instead of running and hiding or throwing a big tantrum (again) about "love not working out". It is both Penny's and Leonard's growth this year that has me glued to the screen. It was time for them both to grow up! Leonard going from not standing up for himself in the Past to the Present where he not only stood up to Penny he actually told her the Truth about how her behavior is Wrong and makes him feel like shite! Never been so Proud of a character before. And Penny could have simply opened a bottle and "drank her problems away" like she has in the (most recent) past but instead she actually has a sit-down with Leonard about her fears and explains them to him without using them as an excuse to put the breaks on their Relationship. Score one for Maturity on both of their parts!

Score one for Maturity on both of their parts! Yes. There are plenty of times we don't hold this show to a real-life standard, but this is one thing I'm glad that they do realistically. Relationships usually don't have years of turmoil and then all at once there's a big revelation, they kiss, and then it's happily ever after. People have issues and it takes time to iron them out, but it doesn't mean they can't be reasonably happy (not completely angst-free but that's good) and interesting in the meantime. These writers don't need a revolving door of love interests to make 24 stories a year.
