In the case of the suggestion of a slap in the face being more "in character" for Sheldon I disagree. A slap in the face has a totally different connotation. While a slap in the butt could be interpreted as funny/sexual/innocent/double-meaning/cheeky a slap in the face ALWAYS has the connotation of hate and or/ betrayal. That would have been just absolutely mean and tbh I think it would be something that would make Sheldon absolutely hated, even by the people who love him most. A slap in the face, is just not acceptable. Now that I think about it, if they would have made him slap Amy in the face, not only would cry but also I would absolutely stop watching the show.

Well obviously they will not have him slap her....my question was that why would he choose a punishment that involves so much physical contact......and not something more sciency/sheldony which would suit his character

I'm not saying that they should really have him slap her...I was just kidding......I thought the Bazinga was implied :p

I agree that there's a BIG difference between a smack on the butt and a slap on the face.

First of, many kids are given a little smack on the behind as a simple punishment, but a slap to the face is usually reserved for something more serious like disrespect or whatever.

Usually on TV a slap to the face is used in a serious or dramatic moment to underscore some strong emotion or betrayal or blatant disrespect.

But usually a spanking is simpler and more innocent unless it is designed to be specifically kinky, like that movie--was it called The Secretary?

But as has been said numerous times, Sheldon is clearly drawing on a practice that was typical in his home when he was growing up and is still common in some homes. He has no sexual intent, but of course Amy is making the most of it and the audience is intended to laugh at the difference.

I disagree. It is completely in character in my opinion. Only Sheldon Cooper would come up with spanking a grown ass woman to punish her for lying to him. LOL.

Well you're right , but I'm not wrong

Your point of view - he does not see any kind of sexual thing in spanking a women's ass

My point of view - why does he even choose something that involves so much physical contact ( in the last episode R\H spied on him so he taught them a lesson...so why not spank their naughty asses lol )

First, I believe a slap on the face is a sign of absolute anger and disrespect. It shows contempt for the other person. Sheldon did not have any contempt, nor any anger for Amy and is typically a very non-violent person. He would never resort to that type of behavior because it is considered an act of violence to slap someone on the face. He did a punishment that he grew up with, one that has been given to children for centuries. It wasn't harsh and certainly not really painful because if it had been, Amy would not have been laughing. Likewise, it is something his mother has mentioned on the show, so we know it was a form of punishment in his family. It was not meant to be violent in any form.

Sheldon, I believe, wanted something where he was able to have physical contact with Amy. I think he actually was enjoying taking care of her and, while he was punishing her for lying, he was not punishing her for making him take care of her longer. As he was nursing her back to health, he was in constant physical contact with her. It was a lot of touching her over the four days (or however long it was supposed to be) that he cared for her. I believe he actually enjoyed the close contact with her and the time he got to spend with her. She gave him a very non-physical option, but he did not go there. In fact, to show you his mindset as not being harsh on punishment selection, he felt her choice was harsher than what he suggested (the spanking). He clearly knew he was not going to hurt her, but I think part of him liked the idea that it was something he was used to and something where he could still be in contact with her in a physical manner.

I believe the writers were trying to show us that Sheldon has no problem touching Amy and that he actually enjoys it. They are leading us toward a direction and this was another one of their quiet way to show us that he is maturing, and makes exceptions for Amy.

I agree. I think the writers are showing us that slowly but surely, Sheldon is changing because of his relationship with Amy. The things he's doing these days that he never would have done before are proof of that. A lot of people don't like that he's changing and want old Sheldon back and I say to them: don't hold your breath. LOL.

Well I would agree with all these things if they are actually implied in show

From what I read from the taping report he was taking care of her because it was in the relationship agreement , but I agree that he cares for her A LOT

But it never was implied that he was actually enjoying physical contact with Amy(or Penny :p)... neither in the taping report of this episode...nor in the previous episodes we have seen on the show ( she had to negotiate a lot in order to get him to cuddle with her...and her clearly was'nt that amused.....and the handholding in movie theater ..he did it because she liked it not him )

If may be in future if they have Sheldon confessing that he used to enjoy all these things , then I will agree :) ... but as of now I did not find any hints that he enjoys physical contact with her...

So at this point I disagree.

And I have no problem with Sheldon changing... and frankly who would want to see the same character without any growth after 5-6 years :):)

I really don't enjoy everyone's disappointment, because they're invested in the couples. I'll just point out for those hoping for romance with these 2 couples: has any part of this season shown romance with them; that's usually the tell...

Nice try but this show has never shown any outright traditional romance between any of the couples whether they were together romantically or not. This is one area where TBBT does infact stray from the more traditional rom-coms.

Oh wow, I missed out on a lot by going to sleep. :p

I first of all wanted to say that my "discomfort" with the spanking scene (putting that in inverted commas because I'm not REALLY in discomfort) has nothing to do with hidden fears or phobias. As I said I don't mind the scene, per-se, I just mind the way and the timing of it.

As for Sheldon taking care of Amy, I think there's a reason they made Sheldon look like he was leaving and then come back and added that line at the beginning "Additionally, you're my girlfriend and I care about your well being". If you think about it, it's like an evolution from the Weekend Vortex (I think it was that one) where he just did not pick up on Amy being upset and just got up and left to go play videogames all weekend. They're deliberately trying to show that he is doing it because he wants to/knows that it's the right thing to do, not just because he's forced by the agreement. And he seems really enthusiastic about it. That's a big deal in that sense.

Also, I do not really think he is changing per se. I subscribe to the idea that the writers had about the season that he will stay the same but he's capable of things we've never seen before. I think this is one of them.

edit: Oh I forgot to add that I personally found the Penny gay innuendos hilarious and not uncomfortable at all. I didn't mind that it was making Penny uncomfortable, that was the whole point (I love when her eyes start blinking really fast when she's uncomfortable with something, that's probably one of my favorite parts of Kaley's physical acting, lol). I think it had all to do with Amy having no filter, which is just funny in my opinion. Of course it's one of those things that get old after a while though, so I'm glad they stopped it.

The only reason I am not bothered by the spanking is because when I was seeing it in person, it was Jim and Mayim, not Sheldon and Amy. It's so different than the end product that's shown on TV and going to every episode in a row has caused me to see the show a tiny bit differently and I am not as critical of certain things.

I don't know how showing that scene will blow over. I think most people will think it's funny and just not care after that.

On a totally unrelated note, I find it quite ironic that if you go on Tumblr right now, the first post in the Shamy tag is chickens pecking for corn. And that it is completely involuntary because it's not meant to have anything to do with the actual Shamy. lol.

IMHO both the naked revenge and the spanking are rating related (jumping the shark Type tricks) when BBT doesn't need it. I feel the writers are not staying true to the Original plot and are scared they may lose their Number One rating.

.

I believe it is closer to what BangerMain stated in their post yesterday. Lorre is pushing the envelope for his own agenda. He sees Shamy as the perfect couple to do that with. So if he doesn't get a lot of backlash from these episodes it will be just a foreshadowing of even more to come. From what I read in the forums it seems the majority of Shamy followers love it. So if that is any indication then it will just get more and more explicit. If the Shamy followers like it then personally it doesn't bother me. However, it will bother me if he starts messing with L/P and H/B. Let Lorre have his test couple. Ultimately the fans will decide one way or the other IMO.

As a Shamy follower, I can only say that this is going to be my reaction if you're right:

I hope that scene is a one-off. It would totally ruin the Shamy for me if Lorre really has some kind of agenda like the one that has been suggested. But I do believe it's too soon to tell, so I'll reserve my judgement for a later time.

But that's exactly the point. Money and ratings. Let's face it, Sheldon is arguably the most popular character on the show. Would they really use HIM as a "test character" for a cheap in-your-face sexual comedy agenda ala 2 2/1 men? That would ruin the character as he would just become a caricature of himself. It would get old real fast and a lot of people would stop watching. I really hope they're not *that* stupid. In a sense, Fruit Loop is right, it would be a jump-the-shark strategy that could make sense 4 years down the line, but not now when the ratings keep going up.

Anyway, that's just talking hypothetically. I do think it's a bit of a stretch to assume that because of one scene they have an "agenda". Let's wait and see (and hope for the best, lol).

Personally I like the changes sheldon seems to be undergoing. He has always been one of the funniest characters on the show this is true but in reality he has been the same character for basically the entire series. Its nice to see him evolving and changing into someone a little more mature. I'm all for the spanking scene and hope they continue to add little things like this to show how sheldon is becoming both more comfortable around amy but also more comfortable with physical contact

What I'm not getting is....what EXACTLY do you have a problem with....Sheldon eventually exploring his sexuality through non-conventional means OR Amy benefitting from said exploration.

In relationships, things start moving out of the realm of the mind to more physical things...

And as for the general population : THEY WILL LOVE IT!

If GetGlue, Twitter and other social media is ANYTHING to go by, the general populous want to see Sheldon and Amy have sex. So they will lap this up.

Just because of the reputation he has made for himself with 2 1/2 Men I guess.

Seriously though, there's no need to get so aggressive if someone does not like that scene. We're all allowed to like different things, right? I've noticed you've been getting quite angry at people discussing that scene. It's not like everyone is under contractual obligation to love everything that has Shamy in it unconditionally.

And there you go. WHEN did I ever say I have a problem with the Shamy having sex??? I am ALL for Sheldon hitting puberty and sleeping with her at some point! I just don't have to like every single thing that they do because of that, that's all. Yes, I love the Vaporub scene. I love the bathing. I don't like the spanking. So, sue me! :icon_rolleyes:

Lorre carefully crafted this couple and he's not going to pour strange chemicals all over them and give the result to the fans to see if it kills them. Lorre loves this couple because it breaks his agenda and he knows he has to treat them differently. He drops these events in for humor and he's smart enough to realize that it shouldn't define them. Fans enjoy it because it's funny and rare, making it happen too regulary will be like pouring too much salt into the recipe. I know for a fact that I would struggle to carry on buying it.

I just disagree with almost everything you say about Sheldon or Shamy.
