I can relate, to some degree, to what you all are saying.

It's hard when you are enthusiastic about something and others around you just don't get it.

While I don't remember ever being bullied and I was never truly an outsider, as an adult I've found it harder to find people to share my interests with than I did while I was in school (back when dinosaurs roamed the earth.)

When I was a kid I always seemed to have a friend or two who liked the things I liked and with whom I could talk about such things.  I remember in 4th grade or so, a girl named Anita was into horses, like I was (like a lot of girls are at that age, oddly) and we used to talk about them, read about them, pretend to be horses... (dang, that's embarrassing...)  It was just the two of us, but we had a great time.

At the same time, though, I had lots of other interests and various friends that I shared those interests with.

Being in band and getting good grades (but not the highest grades, necessarily) put me in a pretty good social position, though I was never "popular".  In junior high and high school I always had a solid group of friends and we always had a good time.  Even in college I had a pretty tight bunch, at least for the first 3 years.  AND we played D&D (<--nerd cred.)

But once I moved out here to join the symphony, I found it harder to find people I clicked with.  I have some friends at church whom I know I can count on if I need help, but there's no one there who really shared my taste in movies or music or books or whatever.  There's some overlap, but no real shared obsessions, you know?

Same thing with friends I have had at work over the years.  I can maybe do a few things with some of them, but there's no "hanging out" and certainly no talking about The X-Files or now, TBBT, and so on.

As a matter of fact, it's hard for me to get most of them to bother going to hear a symphony concert.  I know a few people from churck or work who go to the concerts, and I love that they do.  But most of them aren't really interested.

Even my younger sister, who is probably my closest friend on the planet, doesn't quite get my obsessions--though she should understand, since she gets obsessed over things, herself! :p

Like she doesn't get why I like to write fanfic--she tells me I should use my powers for good rather than evil.  WHATEVER!  I still make her beta-read my stories! :p

And she doesn't understand why I go to message boards, so I have to keep reminding her that this is a place where I can talk about all this stuff that I love, TXF, TBBT, etc., and there are other people who love to talk about it, too.

Over the years on the TXF boards I feel like I have actually formed some decent "friendships" and that there are people out there who understand at least some aspect of who I really am. :D

This thread, at this moment, is giving me an inordinate amount of warm fuzzies - I love how therapeutic it's gotten - and if I hadn't already run out of likes (as usual), I would want to give as many as possible to MJ, Tensor, Spook, Kyzzx and everyone else who shared their  personal stories here. I can so relate and identify.. have been the 'outsider' all my life, in real life. Geeky, science nerd girl, great at studies and zero at sports back in school, quiet and socially awkward, unconventional views, lunch breaks spent alone, super-fixated on one offbeat passion or the other which I hardly ever found anyone to share with. (Thank the Geek Gods for the internet and y'all).

It took me the last 20 years to figure out that it's okay to be me, even if it restricts the number of people around me who could like me; because then at least the few who do will like the real me. But even now,  I admit to reading 'why can't I make friends' articles online, sometimes.. life on the outskirts is never completely easy!

2 of what I would consider close friends of mine I met on an XF chat room 12 years ago. I've only seen them in person twice and even so they're two of the people I'm most comfortable speaking to. It's unbelievable what the internet can do. I feel for you Tensor, I can't imagine how hard it must have been to only have to rely on those around you to share your passions.

Jeanalice, the quote about the trains: totally relate. Just for me it's XF, tornadoes and snowboards. lol.

I think the only non-geek trait I have is that I'm fairly athletic, always loved sports. I was lucky enough to end up at a uni where being a geek and a jock is not mutually exclusive :p

The quote about the trains occured to me a little while ago while texting with my younger sister.

I mentioned in another thread that I was gushing a little much over THanksgiving (it turns out there's a BBT scene or quote for almost every occasion...) and she kept teasing me about it.

So, today I was telling her about how long I was going to be visiting her and said she was going to be sick of me and she teased me that she would only get sick of me if I kept talking about TBBT... :(

That quote about the trains instantly popped into my head.

However...she also told me that she had started recording BBT episodes...  So there! :p

There's no way in my mind they're not going to be renewed. Or are they waiting for next year to confirm renewals? It must be hard to write a story when you don't know when you're meant to wrap it up by...

Oh, goodie, goodie, goodie! Thanks for the taping report, Kyzzx and Monique. It sounds brilliant.

I agree with what has been already said here. :D

I daresay that what will end up turning Sheldon on (physically) might have something to do with Amy's newly found comic book/sci-fi interest and knowledge... :p

You know what, if Amy gets herself an avatar on WoW we might even get some Sheldor virtual coitus; she'd make a super hot troll! Nice safe way to awaken Sheldon's interest too.

Oh they will renew.  Mostlikely they will decide or announce in March.  Usually if a show has fabulous ratings and the network wants them for sure they do the renewals a year in advance.  I imagine CBS will buy s8 and s9.

I hope we get a Valentine episode and I hope it is romantic and funny instead of dark and weird like the Sheldon and Santa Claus thing this last episode. Also after seeing this last episode and the mean thing that girl did to Raj, I want him to have someone for Valentines day too. I think he could hook up with Alex on Valentines day and could be off and on with her the rest of the season. Then they could get rid of her by saying she graduated and got a great job with NASA in Florida so her and Raj split up on good terms. The next season they could make reference that Raj and her keep in touch by email in case they ever want to bring her back for a future episode.

I can't explain why I found this quip incredibly hilarious. Oh, and I love that idea.
