Leonard and his jackets/hoodies

I have always wondered why Leonard wears some type of jacket over his t-shirt. Each time a watch an episode, I notice this. Any reason why?

They all have a 'look'.

Leonard wears a t-shirt, a hoodie and a jacket with pockets.

Sheldon wears a t-shirt over a longer sleeved top.

Raj wears a sweater vest over a shirt and t-shirt.

Howard wear skinny jeans and a polo neck with an alien pin on his collar.

Amy wears baggy cardigans, tights and skirts.

Only Bernie and Penny vary their clothes.

Its a character quirk of this show and is quite unusual. They all have a 'uniform' and you don't normally see this unless it's a cartoon. It kind of fits the nerd theme.

Thank you so much for your reply. Sometimes my mom watches this show, and when we're talking on the phone, she will ask me why Leonard always wears a jacket and hoodie. Now I can give her an explanation!

I find it amusing that Leonard is pretty much ALWAYS wearing three layers - shirt, hoodie, jacket. You'd think it would get kind of warm at times. :D

Bernie not so much either. She mostly wears a floaty dress, a nice fitting cardigan and tights.

It's true, each character has their own 'look'.

I do think though that the outfit Leonard wears is only a t-shirt and a jacket/hoodie combo. I think those jackets are made like that so they look like their is a hoody underneath but really it's just part of the jacket.

Same for Sheldon. The long sleeves on his shirt at woven into the t-shirt.

However Raj's outfit legitimately seems like 3 pieces. The collar shirt, the vest and jacket. I always wondered why he wore that many layers! It's freakin' Southern California! lol

I always wondered if they got hot in all those layers as well.

Also if you'll notice, Sheldon isn't the only one wearing interesting tees. Leonard's shirts have some pretty cool/silly designs too. I personally like the one with the penguins wearing the sunglasses...and his recycling one. :D

God they cover that man up far too much.

I know exactly why Leonard wears multiple layers of clothing. It's because of his insecurities. He's literally 'hiding' behind a both hoodie and a jacket, in California weather, almost like a security blanket. A buffer between him and the rest of the world. It's a well established phenomenon in physchology. People cope with it differently. Some people gain weight, some people develop agoraphobia and never leave their houses. Leonard wearing at least three layers of clothing at all times is very much like some of us having to sleep under a blanket at night even when it's much too hot for it. It just makes us feel safer.

I saw this, and at first just agreed with the other comments, but also came up with my own mini-theory a little later so came back to share it, could be wrong, as it's extremely situational. But during all the seasons there are many references to Sheldon not liking Leanord's insistence on raising the temperature on the thermostat, and even banning him from doing so. So.... you could say that Leanord's just used to warmer temperatures (not sure if New Jersey is a hot place, being English) and as Sheldon has the apartment constantly colder.... he resorts to more layers?

Nah man it's because the thermostat is too low

Have you noticed, Penny is always wearing spagetti straps. Espicially the early seasons. Makes no sense.
