Anomaly Posted September 20, 2012 Posted September 20, 2012 I picked up the season 5 Blu-ray/DVD combo pack on release day at Best Buy. Normally, when I go to bed, I put in a disc & hit repeat in case I fall asleep. Anyway, after realizing the Blu-rays will not repeat the entire disc (only episodes), I switched, and put the DVD versions in the player. Anyway, disc 2 always freezes at the 6:03 mark, when Leonard & Penny are discussing what movie to see. I returned the set to Best Buy, and the replacement did the exact same thing at the exact same time. I returned it once more, and again, the same thing. Unfortunately, the last time I returned it, the store was out of the combo pack, so now I only have the DVD set. Has anyone else had this problem, as it seems odd that three different sets have had the same issue?
netmouse Posted September 20, 2012 Posted September 20, 2012 Sounds like you've stumbled across a bad batch of burns from the manufacturer and by sheer coincidence, that same batch has ended up at the one store. I would suggest asking the store to order you a new copy from their supplier and cross fingers your new dvd isn't from the same, buggy batch. Or get a refund and source a new copy from elsewhere. Tripper Posted September 20, 2012 Posted September 20, 2012 It seems a fairly common occurrence for a bad batch to end up at one store. We don't get too many reports of problems with DVDs, but when we do people often seem to return the product and then get another bad copy. I suppose production faults are likely to happen in quick succession. I don't think the problems are widespread as we haven't had lots of reports of bad discs. A site like Amazon would be filled with reports if it was widespread.

Yeah, that's pretty much the conclusion I'd come to, as well. Scanning through the forums, I haven't seen any talk about this issue, so (like you said), it's probaly one small, bad batch that probably all ended up together, in my area. I'll give best Buy a call & see if they can either order a new copy or if I can wait for a new shipment without worrying about going past the return date. Actually, I'll just return it to a different Best Buy. There's three very close to me. Edited September 20, 2012 by Anomaly
Anomaly Posted September 21, 2012 Posted September 21, 2012 (edited) Just an update for anyone interested... We have three Blu-ray players in our home, and I have since realized this happens on only one of them, so it very well may be a compatibility issue. The player this occurs on is a Sony BDP-S300 (with the latest firmware). However, there is another completely different issue with the same disc, when played on one of our other players. When the second episode on the disc starts, it automatically fast forwards through 15-20 seconds of material, then slows to normal speed with the voice severely out of sync. If I skip back to the beginning of the episode, it will play normally. This issue occurs on LG model BD690 (also with the latest updates). Anyway, I contacted Warner Brothers, and they have offered to replace the entire set. I am going to try returning the set one more time, to a different Best Buy, in hopes that I'll get a different batch. I'm also hoping that a different Best Buy will have the BD combo pack in-stock, so I can switch back to it. netmouse Posted September 21, 2012 Posted September 21, 2012 Thanks for the update. I have a similar issue with my 1st disc of my season 2 set sticking during the opening of a scene. It only does it when I play it on a particular dvd player. Whereas it runs fine on my XBOX. Gotta love the glitch gremlins.
Anomaly Posted September 21, 2012 Posted September 21, 2012 Yeah, I had another issue with one other disc (forgot which season) when played on the LG. As each new epsiode would start, the sound would completely go away. I would have to rewind to the beginning of the episode, and (just like with the season 5 issue), it would play normally after that. The funny thing is that TBBT is the only series I've had any disc playback issues with on any of our players.
netmouse Posted September 21, 2012 Posted September 21, 2012 It's a shame you've experienced issues with an LG player. I've personally found LG to be very reliable when it comes to DVDs, especially their players with DivX/avi playback. SONY have finally started releasing their players with avi playback which is nice. I've recently upgraded to the Western Digital box. If the video format exists, this little black beauty will play it. <3 WD

On one hand, the Sony is older, has less features and loads a lot slower, but is a much better player. On the other hand, the LG is newer, has many features and loads extremely quickly, but is buggy. The Sony is definitely a more solid machine. Either way, my next player will be an Oppo.
netmouse Posted October 5, 2012 Posted October 5, 2012 I'd take a SONY over an LG so long as it has avi playback.
Anomaly Posted October 5, 2012 Posted October 5, 2012 (edited) I'd take a SONY over an LG so long as it has avi playback. Yes, the Sony is a much better & sturdier player than the LG. To be honest, I was extremely hesitant to buy the LG in the first place. As a home theater geek, I still look at LG as the company formerly known as Lucky Goldstar, who sold $10 VCRs at grocery stores. In the end, I'll much more than likely replace the LG first. My only reservation will be that it's newer and loads much faster. All that said, I want to eventually replace the both of them with Oppo players. But back on-topic, I still haven't had the chance to replace this set at a different location. I think I still have a week or two left to do so. I'll report back in if/when I get another set.
