Things I'd Like To See Penny Do

Recommended Posts

It's entirely up to Chuck Lorre; he owns the show whatever he says goes. I'd like to see them do a dream sequence with Shenny & check the ratings vs. Shamy, now that would give us an objective standard. As right now no one knows if it's just Sheldon with a girlfriend that fans want or a specific pairing.

I think you're living in dream land.

It's preposterous to imagine that they'd do such a thing--for one thing, there's no real way to tell if the ratings for a particular episode had to do with what happened in that episode or other external factors, such as what else was on TV at that time or various other issues. Plus, if there was a one-time rating spike, that wouldn't mean that whoever watched the episode liked what they saw. Lots of people watch the final episode of a series, for example, but that doesn't mean that many of them don't end up being disappointed with what they see.

And of course it's up to Chuck Lorre and Bill Prady and I think they've made it abundantly clear that they're not going down any such road, no matter what the Shenny minority wants. I think that you and your fellow Shenny shippers are the only ones harboring a fantasy that the world wants to see Sheldon and Penny together.

Most show-runners don't try to write their shows according to audience whims. If they did, they'd be constantly chasing their tails and trying to live by opinion polls and that would make for a very disjointed process.

What they're going to do is tell the story they want to tell and apparently that story is that Leonard and Penny love each other but have to figure out how that works in their lives; Howard and Bernadette love each other but have to figure out how to deal with cutting his apron strings from his mom; Raj needs desperately to find someone to love; and last, but apparently pretty importantly, Sheldon and Amy like and probably love each other but it's just a matter of helping Sheldon grow into it.

There is no Shenny, no matter how hard you hope for it, dream about it, campaign for it, etc. TPTB have already decided and I think that while perhaps at one time, before Amy came along, the audience may have had a general desire to see Sheldon get a girl, the vast majority of the audience seems to be happy with the girl that TPTB have come up with, and it sure as heck ain't Penny.

The problem is that dreams, especially ones of that kind of nature are often interpreted as an subconscious desires or fears that are trying to make their way to the conscious surface. Given that there's been no hint that Penny harbors any kind of sexual or emotional attraction to Sheldon or vise versa it would make no sense for either character to have that kind of dream.

The writers should only be focusing there efforts on the relationships for which they've laid the foundations for. Throwing every ship a bone will only cause unnecessary strife and would only serve to undermine what they are trying to do with both Sheldon/Amy and Leoanrd/Penny. I remember the shipper wars of Smallville yore where the writers were throwing every ship a bone. It was knightmare navagating various fan forums for that show without pissing contests erupting between the Clana's, Chlarkers, and Cloisers. As obnoxious as the Shenny shippers are now, what do you thinik would happen were the writers to actually give them something of substance, even if it completely went against what the show has established?

I say let the Shenny shippers have their fan fic and lets keep it at that.

I use to watch Smallville, but was never that interested the ships on that show, but I know all about shipping wars on other shows and non ship canons invading the reality of a show it happens all the time on my favorite show Supernatural. As for Shenny fans, yes they will have their fanfiction always so I don't mind leaving it at that because I am a total Shamy Shipper all the way, but no matter what the Shenny fans will find ways to read into the story what they want between Sheldon and Penny.

Personally I think Sheldon and Penny would make a terrible real couple for like a million different reasons, but dreams don't always have to be about subconcious desires. They could be like you said about subconscious fears too like Leonard could be afraid of Penny getting to close to Sheldon or Raj so he has a nightmare about the two of them together. Frankly I wish the whole stupid Raj/Penny thiing had all just been a nightmare in Leonard's head instead of real at least then it wouldn't have impacted their real friendships on the show. Well same could be said for Sheldon, if for example Leonard caught Sheldon being extra nice to Penny or caught them in bed together, he might have a nightmare about them together as a couple, but it wouldn't be real because Sheldon would never betray Leonard or Amy like that. Its not in his nature.

Or Amy could be the one to have the dream about them together because she becomes jealous of their friendship or if she had a dream about Sheldon and Penny it could be taken as her subconscious desire to have both of them together like a threesome type thing by some or perhaps it would be her fear of losing Sheldon to someone else and Penny being her BFF would make that all the more upsetting for her.

But, more than likely if they ever did do a dream type episode like that the writers would find a way to play it all just for laughs and not take it seriously at all because dreams aren't always about secret desires or fears sometimes they're just random and silly. The dream could involve all couples on show being mixed up what if Sheldon was with Penny, Leonard was with Bernadette, Amy was with Raj, etc...

Then it be more like an alternate reality/universe type dream and not have to come from mind of any of main characters, but another less important character like Captain Sweatpants or Lonely Larry envision a crazy mixed up world where everybody acts the opposite of who they normally behave like Sheldon behaving more like Leonard does, still love science, but less crazy and over the top about, or Amy being the one who can't talk to women like Raj, Bernadette could behave like Penny and be the girl next door, Raj acting like Sheldon and Penny dressing like and behaving like Howard could be super funny.

It would give actors a chance to behave totally differently for the humour of it all and not because of romance or changing ships or making people jealous stuff. Then once this crazy wacko dream is over everything would still be normal again and the dream would have no real impact on the characters real lives, but would give the audience a chance to laugh at the change in all of their personalities for an episode and see characters that normally don't interact together get to interact more in a brand new way for a change. .

I want to see Penny get drunk and try to drag Sheldon into bed the way she did Leonard. Sheldon will emphatically reject her. Leonard will see the true worm eaten nature of her soul and dump her. Then, Penny will take her manipulative, user self back to Nebraska. Maybe that would drive a stake through the heart of the Shenny monster once and for all.

I have never seen worms eating her soul. You see things that are only in your imagination, because of your hate or whatever. Embrace the rainbow!!!

* A great acting gig, perhaps even just a supporting role in a bigger movie.

* Maybe move to Cheesecake Factory bar full-time, since she (tiny tiny tiny tiny 'spoiler') admits to being a bad waitress. (/end spoiler)

* Do more considerate and spontaneous things, like when she bought the Transporter collectibles for Leonard and Sheldon.

* Continue to take more of an interest in his work.

* ...and, of course, the big "I love you" from her.

I have already seen vast improvement with her character so far in season 6. Season 5 made me dislike Penny very much, so as long as they keep going in the direction they're going, I'll be fine with it.

am I the only one who really doesn't want to see Penny getting a good acting job? I think I wouldn't like it because she is not working to get it. She doesn't talk about going to auditions, we don't hear her talking about casting, and she doesn't even like reading books (she got pretty upset when Leonard put that on his list and then she just read "2 weeks for hard rock abs". I don't think she knows what it takes to be an actress, and she doesn't care either.

If they make her at least talk about any of the previous things, or probably talking about she at least taking acting lessons (I dunno, maybe she having to prepare a character for a class and having the others help her?) maybe I would be OK. But otherwise, it would just feel as she gets the acting job just for being a cute blonde and nothing else (because let's face it, she sucks at acting).

The guys and Amy & Bernie got to where they are by studying and working hard. It would be really unfair IMO for Penny to get a big break without even working for it, just for being "cute"

I agree, because lately (last couple seasons) it seems like she's not doing anything, but I thought when she got called back for the commercial she did, she had been going to auditions? I'm probably remembering incorrectly, but during her little speech where she tells the guys she's moving back to Nebraska, I thought she mentioned she had been trying and going to auditions and nothing was happening, then she got called for the commercial.

yes, I remember that, but the thing is, she has never mentioned anything again regarding it :( that was Season 5 premiere, and that was it. And previous to that, there wasn't mentions either. That commercial did feel also a bit like out of nowhere.

Another thing that put me off of that was Penny saying "I'm gonna be a STAR!" when her agent told her about it. She doesn't seem to have realistic expectations either.

I dunno. I want her to work for it. That's the only way she can get some growing and self-respect out of it. What easy comes easy goes.

I wonder what will happen if Penny becomes a STAR ... cause she already behaves like she is superior to Leonard in their relationship :icon_surprised: :icon_surprised:

I know the writers are trying to fix the Penny character but I hope they throw in some sweet stuff from her character (like the trasporters ) , so it could balance out the not so sweet stuff we have getting so far in this season

Truthfully, a lot of actors/actress get work based soley on how attractive they were/are. That is usually how it starts for many of them. I know this because I've spoken with quite few casting people in the biz. The ones who really want it will at least attempt to become better actors as they navigate the system but most of them got their careers started soley because they were considered attractive.

It really wouldn't be out of the question for Penny to land a job based on her looks.

I think that just because she doesn't talk about taking auditions doesn't mean that she's not doing it. We don't see that much of her every day life in the way that we often see the guys, so I don't know that one could infer from what we are shown of her life whether or not she is taking auditions.

I think that they really only reference such things in her life when it has something to do with something specific in the current episode.

I don't think that they'll make her an instant movie star. I thnk they've made it pretty clear that she's a struggling actress like many young people in LA. I think they're likely to make any acting gig she gets end up being funny like the commercial--a big deal to her, but not very significant in the greater scheme of showbiz.

I think it could be interesting (and eventually funny) if she were to encounter the old "casting couch" kind of situation where a director or producer is trying to put the moves on her, or pressure her into sex in order to get a part. Maybe she turns to Leonard and he tries to confront the guy, but Penny, being the more aggressive one, ends up beng the one to kick the guy in the nuts, the way she did with Zarnecki.

This could be funny and finally make her see sense over her whole acting thing. I might be wrong, but I think we are supposed to believe Penny has little talent for acting and doesn't realise her limitations. (This is not directed at Kaley BTW who I think is really good). The hemorrhoid commercial was meant to be seen as funny and awful at the same time. And it's true that she doesn't read or show any interest in the arts whatsoever. I would be very surprised if they gave Penny an acting role, she might be going to college for lessons but I really hope it's something else. I think she is learning as much from the nerds, as they are from her. It's a two way street.

I think Penny's character is supposed to be representative of the nameless thousands of pretty young kids who go to Hollywood wanting to become a famous actor/actress. 99% of them aren't good enough to make it and it would be true to reality if nothing ever comes of her efforts. I'd like to see her realize that - maybe not totally give up on her dream, but come to terms with reality - and seek out something else to do with her life.

That, and of course come to terms with her feelings for Leonard once and for all. The question of their relationship needs to be resolved this season. So far it looks like that's the intention. :)

I thought I had read somewhere that they're planning on having her move forward with her career (maybe in a magazine somewhere?) so I don't think they're planning to have her abandon her dream of being an actress.

I think she can have some success in getting some acting jobs without becoming any kind of star. There are tons of actors out there who do small roles on TV or in movies but never get any kind of really big break like a lead role. She could have a bit of money from acting jobs, but still have to have at least a part time "day job".

The problem with Penny having a day job and acting is she is running out of hours in the day, especially if she goes to college. Penny also does not do preparation work for anything, read, study, receive mentoring or do her homework. Even if her great beauty gets her a small role I doubt if she would do the "work" needed to follow up.

I can see her giving up waitressing and being supported by Leonard allowing her the time to presue her career or education. She is not nearly organized or motivated enough to do all the things needed to succeed in a profession with out his help.

Well, she supposedly takes acting lessons, and as I said before, we don't see every minute of her day or every day of the week, so there's no way to say she never does this or never does that. We have never seen Raj in the shower, so does that mean he never takes a shower?

We don't see them buying groceries, putting gas in their cars, etc.

If Penny is taking acting lessons, it's probably a class she attends once a week or maybe a couple of days a week. If she's taking a class or two at the community college, again, it might take only a couple of hours 2 or 3 days a week, depending on the class. She apparently doesn't work every day at the Cheesecake Factory and sometimes she works during the day and sometimes at night, etc.

It seems to me that she could easily take an acting class one evening a week, take a college class 2 days a week (during the day or at night, really) and still work at the Cheesecake Factory and take auditions now and then. Her job schedule is probably pretty flexible, with day and evening shifts, so she can probably work around any time she needs to take off for an audition, etc.

I work full time, play in the symphony, teach a private student, and participate in my church choir and I also have occasional additional music gigs, so it's very possible to juggle all kinds of activities.

Again, they only show or talk about her activities when it pertains to the episode somehow, so you can't infer from not seeing a particular activity that she never does it.

You are obviously educated, motivated, organized and thoughtful. Penny is none of these thing. She has been shown to be invested in none of the things in her life including the man she loves. She seems completely oblivious of this as she is so self unaware.

These are not the characteristics of someone who can handle several challenges at the same time.

If they write that she can, then she can. SHe doesn't have to be educated to be an actress, she just has to be able to learn her lines and access whatever emotions are appropriate, etc. And if she got a call-back for the commercial she did, she obviously was convincing enough in her line-reading to get hired.

There are all kinds of bit parts she could get and work her way up to doing all kinds of random commercial work, which could be hilarious for the show--she could end up dressed in all kinds of weird costumes or doing all kinds of weird lines or whatever.

Most actors in smaller parts aren't educated or even sophisticated. I would argue it's more important to be instinctive.

I think you're judging the character by some strange real-life standard, but even that judgement is based on your personal extrapolation of the limited amount of her life that we see. By the same extrapolation we could argue that the guys don't work very hard at being geniuses, etc.

She will be whatever the writers make her out to be and if that means that she starts to succeed at her acting career, then that's how it will be--and that doesn't mean that she'll only be able to get parts based on her looks or whatever. It will depend on whatever the writers do.

The show hasn't shown Penny doing enough to "earn" a starring acting role, and giving her one might just fan the flamers. I would wait for the Penny fix to settle in first but expanding on Penny's acting classes, auditions, standing in line, etc. could be funny, and a means of introducing actors to the show.  They have to be careful not to do a Joey from Friends redux.
