phantagrae Posted November 2, 2012 Posted November 2, 2012 I'm still laughing about this ep. I love the chess clock scene--and just before, when Leonard says, "Is it possible we're having two different conversations?" And Sheldon says something like, "How should I know? I wasn't listening." :D Knock knock knock "Steven Hawking" Oh, and I love when he pets his head and says, "Thank you, brain!" And then later slaps his head and says, "Stupid brain!" LOL. phantagrae Posted November 2, 2012 Posted November 2, 2012 (edited) In reading all the reactions I think that some things are being taken a little too seriously. I remember JP doing an interview where he was addressing a question about Sheldon being a potentially unlikeable character and he said that sometimes the point of a scene or interaction was to have Sheldon annoy or irritate the others, but that the key lies in how they all react to him. Most often their attitude toward him is one of good-natured exasperation or frustration, and that's supposed to clue the audience in to what kind of person he really is. If they live with him and put up with him, then that's the audience's way in to understand him. This is true of all of the characters and for most writing in general. The reaction of others is how the writer shows us the intention of the character. While we as viewers may have individual beliefs or values that color our perception of a particular character, the way the writer communicates to the audience is through the acceptance or rejection offered by the other characters. DPK Posted November 2, 2012 Posted November 2, 2012 (edited) Leonard did screw up here. He should have for better or worse let Penny pass or fail on the merit or lack of merit of her original paper. That being said Penny was a real bitch tonight though. Her mocking of Leonard and bullying of Amy and Bernadette didn't set high marks for her character. Yes she had a right to be mad at Leonard for what he did but it isn't like he did what he did to spite her in any real way. He was genuinely trying to spare her from hitting an emotional low had her paper gotten a bad grade because he knows she isn't completly happy with where her life has gone. Had Penny's original paper gotten that B- then the storyline would have had a real pay-off but the fact that Bernadette and Amy rewrote the paper that got that grade it just makes her look bad. As per the prediction of break up time for them because of this incident. You can keep wishing, just because issues arise doesn't mean a break up is on the horizon. Especially when you consider that something like this would have broken these two up a couple of years ago. One thing the writers are doing that is despite given L/P bumps in the round they are having them work through them instead of having them cause a complete hault to the relationship. Superlovelexi Posted November 2, 2012 Posted November 2, 2012 (edited) They just need to stop making Penny act like a Mean Girl Bully type character who is way too insecure about being a dumb blonde and they need to stop making Leonard so overly needy and always doing exactly what we all know will piss Penny off. I know relationships on tv need conflicts, but can't they find a newer issues for them to harp on instead of repeating the same problem. I mean look at Howard and Bernadette in the beginning of their relationship the issue was whether or not Howard even wanted to be with Bernie long term because he thought he wanted a hotter chick like Megan Fox, he was even more shallow than Penny was back then, but now he loves his wife and tells her so all time. Why can't they grow Penny's character up some more like they did with Howard. Sure he's still a whiny mama's boy at times, but he's matured enough to recognize true love when he found it and marry that girl. Penny isn't any closer to that happening with Leonard than she was in season one. That is becoming just painfully annoying. I do still believe L/P will end up together, but I wish it was a more likeable relationship with a much better steadier growth pattern happening. And as a Shamy shipper I must say sometimes I do worry the writers will start doing same with Shamy only Amy will be Leonard and Sheldon will be Penny and they will make Amy beg for his love and sex all the time and have Sheldon treat her like Penny treats Leonard like he's not that sure he really wants this relationship and has to keep being reminded over and over why he likes Amy so that their relationship doesn't keep moving forward but remains in an endless cycle of sitcom drama for drama sake. I like it better when Sheldon is making steps towards compromise and true partnership with Amy like last week's Halloween episode. Are the writers that afraid to let their characters develop and actually turn into decent caring loving people who have good funny relationships with each other along with their love for all things geeky and science-y as if somehow making them act like screwed up insecure, whiny, selfish characters that get stuck repeating the same mistakes over and over again is funnier. THAT IS CRAZY AND SO NOT TRUE! Too many sitcoms get stuck in ruts like that and start to repeat the same mistakes over and over with their characters expecting different results until audience gets tired of it. BBT is too good and too funny, I don't want it to go down that rutty road. Edited November 2, 2012 by Superlovelexi
Convict13 Posted November 2, 2012 Posted November 2, 2012 (edited) OK, I enjoyed this episode but there was one scene I really did not like. Can you guess which one? Penny bullying Bernadette and Amy. Why oh why? Actually I enjoyed Kaley's delivery of the lines very much, but I hated what she was saying, I really did not like that scene, it put me off the episode. I liked that it was mainly the 5 again too, and it is so wonderful to see Raj back again, oh I missed him last season. I get the conflict between Leonard and Penny re the studying, I think it would have been better if Penny let Leonard help they could have built up a wonderful storyline and growth for their characters. I just didn't feel the chemistry between Leonard and Penny tonight This one felt like an "old time" episode in parts, I just wished they would stop mucking about with Penny. Funny then the Bill Prady tweeted that this is one of his favourite episodes ever, I thought it was the weakest one this season so far. BlackWhiteRose Posted November 2, 2012 Posted November 2, 2012 Here´s my opinion: That episode had some amusing scenes. I really cracked up about Pennys imimtaion of Leonard´s voice and then Sheldons comment that she just sounded like him (Leonard) And I loved that chess-clock scene with Sheldon and Leonard. That was so funny. Oh and the beginning was great where Howard and Raj danced to the Village People Song "YMCA" haha and the game was in the Star Wars version very cool! I really loved it that Howard and Raj where hanging out again and do things together! Yay the bromance is back! The end was funny with Penny, Amy and Bernadette. Penny, Penny you cheky bugger And Amy and Bernadette helped her yeah right Oh I can`t wait until Leonard finds that out And poor Bernadette had to shower twice `cause of the underwear of Howards mother On a scale from one to ten I`ll give the episode a 7/10. (Reason: I couldn`t laugh about everything and Penny annyoed me a little bit ´cause she was mad with Leonard that he wrote her paper but allowed the girls to write it.... I felt sorry for Leonard...but anyway...at the end it was all good more or less but I have to say : That they booth didn`t talk for days after that little conflict was really immature ...I thought they booth are adults and no children...they have to learn a lot. But anyway: Everything is better than a break up! So I won`t complain too much...I try ) Oh and I loved it that Stephen Hawking played with Sheldon and then his joke at the end *haha* Now I understand why Leonard was so amused at the promopic
BazingaFan Posted November 2, 2012 Posted November 2, 2012 (edited) To the comment above about sheldon, I disagree and feel that in perspective this is a comedy, and sheldon is going to be sheldon. Yes, it's great to see him making developments, but sometimes you just have to see the old sheldon and laugh. I absolutely loved jim's portrayal of him in this episode. It really brought me back to the earlier seasons, but there is still more of a softness to him now than before. He let steve hawking win. that is a big deal for sheldon. The comment about amy was completely in his character. Sheldon says things like that sometimes and it just shows that he is still getting used to being in a relationship. I don't see this as any different than him complaining about the hand holding in the movie. That is just sheldon. I enjoyed this episode so much more than the one they did in season 5 about hawking. Thank goodness they are not putting sheldon in maid's costume and making him look stupid (including having the guys making fun of him all the time), like last season. And, I agree with the post above that it was so great seeing raj and howard being buddies again. Raj really looked good when he took his shirt off in the early scene! Regarding penny -- the last scene was a little over the top for her. I don't know whey they are making her like a bully this season, but maybe it's there way of getting her character to confront her faults/feelings that have always been under the surface? Not sure what they are doing but she seems very out of character this season so far. My only criticism for the episode. I thought she was great in the earlier scenes. netmouse Posted November 2, 2012 Posted November 2, 2012 @annie: sry for late PM but looks like you got to see the episode anyways the swedish bay of pirates is your friend, people.... remember this !! lol Anyhoo, I enjoyed this episode a lot. Sheldon was brilliant. Penny's impersonation of Leonard made me giggle. The Leonard/Penny stuff is getting a little on the serious side for my liking. I'm over it. Leonard really deserves better imo. My fiance spends way too much time on that stupid word game, so I could relate to this a lot in tonight's ep. Solid ep. Just the Lenny thing is getting a little redundant. It's becoming kinda annoying like 'Raj holding a beer bottle through the entire 5th season' annoying.
rickfromillinois Posted November 2, 2012 Posted November 2, 2012 I like this episode but not as much as last weeks. Although his intentions were good, I thought that Leonard made a big mistake trying to hekp Penny after she told him not to. Sheldon was Sheldon. His hero woship of Hawkins it a big rock, although the "what does Sheldon and a black hole have in common" joke was funny. I was disapointed in the final scene where instead of doing her own work, Penny had Bernadette and Amy do her work for her, and was because she was less then gracious with them about the situation. I was disapointed in the final scene where instead of doing her own work, Penny had Bernadette and Amy do her work for her, and was because she was less then gracious with them about the situation. I do think that the end would have been "softer" if Penny had been less sure of herself in talking about the girls doing her paper. If it had ended with the girls telling her they'd down played it so it would be more realistic and her be kind of crestfallen, I think that fewer people would be objecting. But they went with the prom queen joke, which was kind of a valid parallel if you're looking at what they might have experienced back in school. Since I'm pretty sure they're not intending to really follow through in this vein, as they often drop such things, I see it as a tossed off joke that will have no real bearing in the big picture. I think that's obvious in how Amy reacts. The thing about this show that one must keep in mind is that certain jokes are always going to be throw-always, like Sheldon's "cut her loose" comment, or that one line in one episode where he said that some kid had once stuffed a Mexican peso up his nose and that it takes him 45 minutes to get through airport security. They put in a funny line or scene, and you are supposed to take it with a big ol' grain of salt, not as true character development or deep consequence. I think that's the case with this scene. When they want to underscore a big development, they usually get a little more serious--like way back at the end of S2 when Penny made her quiet comment behind her closed door wishing that Leonard wasn't going to the North Pole. And I think that most importantly, you have to keep in mind that they're never going to make any of these characters out to be a truly terrible person. Each character has done something mean or rude or selfish or inconsiderate, etc., at some point and will probably do so again as the show proceeds. BazingaFan Posted November 2, 2012 Posted November 2, 2012 Just watched it again... a few more observations... -- the scene in the beginning with the girls was the best one of them together in my opinion this season. when amy said that penny's relationship was weird, and the look penny gave her, was priceless. and, bernie was really good when talking about the shower. -- loved, loved raj in this episode. his american accent was awesome. -- of course as i said before, the scene with sheldon and leonard was the best part. -- anyone else think penny's imitation of leonard didn't sound anything like him? but, loved sheldon's reaction and his laughter afterwards -- sheldon did a great job being both the old and new sheldon in this episode
DPK Posted November 2, 2012 Posted November 2, 2012 Penny's imitation of Leonard was prettty bad actually, but I think that was intentional. Everything we've seen and been told regarding Penny's acting abilities are that they're lacking.

phantagrae Posted November 2, 2012 Posted November 2, 2012 (edited) I love that Amy got a look at Sheldon's tightie-whitie stash (and maybe his Batman undies, too... ) Oh, and I loved Sheldon's line when Leonard left the kitchen, "Come back! SodidIwin? Posted November 2, 2012 Posted November 2, 2012 Penny's imitation of Leonard was intentionally exaggerated to be funnier with Sheldon laughing and stating it was Leonard perfectly. Penny needed to make a point to Leonard and she did. Does Penny need to work on issues, of course, but so does Leonard. She came right out and told Leonard why she didn't tell him she went back to school and yet he did exactly what she specifically asked him not to. Typical Leonard. He just never gets it. So the exaggerated imitation was warranted to make her point. However, in Leonard's defense, he tried to get advice from his supposed best friend and was shot down. Typical self-centered Sheldon acting like an ass once again only caring about himself. People kept asking for the old Sheldon back. Well in this episode he was back in full force. Even wanted to dump Amy because it affected his relationship with SH or so he thought. As for the last scene, I don't know what to make of it. I've tried to go back in my mind trying to think of a previous episode where Penny acted like a bully toward her close friends and couldn't. This has to be just one of those scenes the writers add in to try and make a joke. In any event the camera went right to Amy where she was just over the moon helping and being friends with the "prom queen". So if it's all good with Amy then it must be no big deal! vasu Posted November 2, 2012 Posted November 2, 2012 What Leonard did in this episode was completely out of line.... it was highly immature and disrespectful towards her...no matter what his intentions were... Penny had complete right to get angry at him and mocking him...but boom...all the growth that I thought her character had was undone in the last scene... How nice it would have been if she had tried harder and got that B- grade... And why did he not ask anything when she got B- for the paper which according to him was terrible... I thought this was wonderful opportunity to show more individual growth for L\P and growth in their relationship...A simple story like where Leonard helps Penny to write a good paper on her own and her getting a good grade..which would have showed immense growth in both characters and also would have helped to cement their relationship..and show us WHY they are good for each other......but the writers just seemed to want to put the line "I'm just a waitress" out there... Sorry for the rant...but both L\P came across as highly immature(this is season 6 ) But anyways I am glad that they did not break-up and it looked a one-episode conflict
Ayebee Posted November 2, 2012 Posted November 2, 2012 Very weird episode I have to say... I liked it, and it was funny, but the L/P storyline continues to baffle me. How do they move on from this? Apparently Leonard and Penny didn't speak in a couple of days, so they are surely having problems in their relationship, still... And when Penny mocked him in the end, did that move their relationship into even thinner ice?

I think the mocking was an exaggerated way to tell Leonard not to make the mistake that she couldn't handle it alone again. Which is exactly what penny then says to Amy and Bernadette "he won't be making that mistake again" which I see as her saying she plans on staying with him.
