One other thing, if they are lurking I really believe that Shamy should in counter some very real relationship issues. Issues that, I don't know, maybe break them up to really see if they are meant for each other. That should take a few seasons. Then they can be the wedding for the final episode. Sound good? :)

They probably don't lurk for the same reason that producers don't lurk in other fandoms: legal. People in forums could file lawsuits if they know that the producers are here and they think they stole their posted ideas. It's a "cover your a**" thing.

Your logic is excellent, however, reading all the posts it seems that they cover the whole spectrum of options. Therefore the writers couldn't win in your theory. Just sounds like a hard lawsuit to win.

*shrug* I go by what I see and read in other fandoms, not by what I think "sounds right". Producers usually don't read scripts not submitted by a literary agent for the same reason. True, it might be hard to win, but these days, producers don't need the hassle.

I think you are right about this. The writers are not allowed to look at ideas from outsiders at all. And there is a legal side to this. They must have focus groups or researchers who look at popular opinion but those directly involved with producing the show are forbidden. So if any one is browsing this forum I'm assuming it will be research types. I'm just guessing but I think these people might take an interest.

Well I see the issue, you should only be reading this forum, then there would be no problem! :)

well, it makes me wonder sometimes. Like in this episode, I noticed that the food they ate was more healthy -- sheldon and amy had salads when they were eating in the lab, and the guys were eating some kind of sandwich with a side salad in the apartment. It wasn't that long ago that someone on this forum made a post about, "why don't they eat more healthy?" Anyway, I wonder sometimes if someone important is lurking.

Just saw this episode.

Did I see this right? Did Penny really cheat on her assignment and then deceive Leonard about it in a mocking way? Isn't Penny supposed to like Leonard now? Are they gearing up for yet another breakup? How does cheating on an assignment have anything to do with Penny "bettering herself"?

And then on top of that, Sheldon again belittled Leonard by sincerely telling him that Pennys mocking sounded just like him. What an a$$hat.

My goodness what is going on? Not only that but they have Sheldon cheat to get the better of SH. Then to make matters worse he purposely throws the game to keep SH as his "friend". He did that even after each time he actually commented that it would either be cheating or intellectually wrong. So lets see which is worse someone asking her friends for help or someone knowingly cheated and connives just to make sure he gets what he wants no matter what?

Good point, although I have given up expecting that the writers would be in any way consistent with the characters so this kind of washed over me without much reaction. I'm also begining to doubt that Sheldon is meant to be very smart or honourable at all, contributing to my lack of reaction.

After reading some of the previous posts on this thread, I was again surprised at what some people think is funny. Sheldons comment that Penny's mocking of Leonard sounded just like Leonard was identified as being funny. Hmmmm, curiouser and curiouser.

Why is it weird that people find Sheldon's reaction to Penny's mocking of Leonard funny?

This was just Sheldon being himself. Not 'romantic Sheldon', not 'evolved Sheldon', just the same quirky, unintentionally insulting Sheldon that he always was, starting from season 1. I'm seriously wondering how you ever found the show funny, if he was always an a$$hat to you.

I love the dance routine of Howard and Raj. I would totally enjoy the same game if I had it. I didn't find Bernadette's lines at the beginning funny, but I chuckled at her and Amy's fear of Penny at the end. S. Hawking's joke incredibly hilarious and nerdy!

I found that in the earlier seasons, Sheldon would say insulting things inadvertently. His reaction after people acted insulted was alway one of surprise. As well, the things he said could be seen to be mistakes based on his worldview so one could forgive him.

Now he just seems to be mean. The writing has changed and it no longer seems that he is just mis-speaking.

That being said, this aspect of Sheldons behaviour always annoyed me. His relentless belittling of Leonards work seems to be mixed with a disrespect for experimental physics itself which leads me to think that he doesn't accept the scientific process.

However, getting back to this specific episode, there is no way that Sheldon could realistically think that Penny's mocking was a good impersonation of Leonard. Leonard has never acted like that in any episode. The implication then, is that Penny's act was in line with Sheldons opinion of Leonard which is not based on evidence, but rather a deep seated disrespect for Leonard verging on disgust.

So it looks like we agree 67%. Not 'romantic Sheldon', not 'evolved Sheldon', just a$$hat Sheldon.

The thing is that I just can't see this as funny.

While I think there is some characterization analysis that can be done, in the end it's just a sitcom, not a documentary or a drama, and some of the lines are simply throwaways to get a laugh, which is where I think this one falls because of the obvious exaggeration that Penny was doing. Her "impersonation" of Leonard wasn't really an impersonation of him per se, but just an over-the-top exaggeration--which was made funnier by Sheldon saying that it sounded just like Leonard.

I would think this falls very much in Sheldon's 'inadvertent insults' category. He had no idea that his finding Penny's (terrible) impersonation funny could be considered demeaning to Leonard. It was funny because it seemed to be very much in line with his quirkiness, like his laughing over his private Physics joke that no one else understood. He's never impressed by anything that Penny does, but suddenly found this unlikely thing entertaining.

'Your work is largely derivative. Everybody knows', you mean? :) Unfortunately this aspect of Sheldon's ribbing of Leonard, though certainly insulting to experimentalists, is firmly rooted in reality. Within the Physics world, there's a deep-rooted mutual disdain between the theorists and experimentalists. They both know quite well that each can't survive without the other - the theoretical models are as necessary as their verification - but the experimentalists insist that the theorists just work in an abstract mental space ('at least I didn't have to invent 26 dimensions to make the math come out'), while the theorists don't fail to remind the experimentalists that their work is mainly technical and their knowledge of Physics fundamentals may be weak. I've had the interesting experience of attending a few talks by experimentalists with some theoreticians in the audience and vice versa, and there can be quite a few barbs flying.

Also, Sheldon is a String Theorist; the most esoteric and far-removed from the real world of them all theories.. who knows if it will ever be verified. Such an attitude would be more likely in him than in someone in any other theoretical field, like particle theory. Add to that his natural egocentricism.

I don't think that Sheldon found Penny's mocking to be funny. His response implied to me that he thought that the impersonation was realistic.

I have also been around physicists most of my life. My degree is in physics and my father was a nuclear physicist. I'll grant that there is always a certain amount of ribbing between people of different disciplines, but nothing like what Sheldon does to Leonard.

Well, he laughed. Given how rarely Sheldon laughs, it seems he found it considerably funny, realistic or not.

Nothing that happens on this show is ever exactly of the same level as it happens in real life. Especially when it comes to Sheldon. They take the basic tendencies and features of day-to-day nerd life and play them up (in many cases wildly) for laughs. Like Sheldon and Leonard in arm-to-arm combat on the floor while disagreeing about a presentation, or Raj and Sheldon physically mocking each other when arguing over a calculation.

Well now. Lets see. I guess I could respond with either:

A: (In the true spirit of internet forums) Sorry, but you are wrong, wrong, wrong and I am right, right, right. My opinion is obviously in agreement with the majority of people on the planet and I have reasons A, B, and C to back myself up.

or:

B: Oh well, I guess different people interpret things differently.

I choose B. Have a nice day Pomita. It's always good to chat with you.

I didn't like that scene much either, it wasn't a good impression of Leonard and was a bit meaner than it needed to be. I think Sheldon was just used as a device to make it seem funny, when it wasn't. Not my favourite part of that episode.

I agree..

And Sheldon's part was like to tell the audience that what Penny actually did was an impression of Leonard
