Nervous Fingers...

I've noticed that Simon Helberg does this nervous finger-fussling in almost every scene, it seems. I think if you're looking at the big picture, most of the time you don't notice it, but as I've been rewatching episodes I've been noticing it more and more. He will either use one hand to grab and pinch and twist the fingertips of his other hand, or else he'll rub his thumb over and around his other fingers--almost CONSTANTLY! :p

I noticed that even in once scene with Melissa/Bernie--I think in the Re-Entry ep--he's got his left hand touching her arm, and his fingers are fidgeting!!! It's funny, but a little distracting.

Then I noticed that sometimes JP does something similar, kind of pulling and tugging at his fingertips in some scenes. I don't think he does anything like that all that often, but I've seen it a few times. I think Johnny Galecki has done this sort of thing as well a few times.

I don't think I've seen Kunal or any of the girls do anything similar.

Thoughts?

maybe its a reassurance thing? Simon does it to his wedding ring finger mainly

When he's doing it with one hand, it's a lot of thumb rubbing, like rubbing his first finger over this thumb, or rubbing his thumb over his nails or the tips of his fingers. And when he's doing it two-handing, it seems to focus mainly on the tips of his fingers.

I don't know if it's nervous energy or what.

And speaking of nervous energy, in one ep I was watching Simon is bouncing his leg like crazy while they're sitting at the cafeteria table. And JP tends to wiggle his legs a bit now and then, especially when sitting at a table.

I've noticed that Jim wiggles his fingers sometimes, in the middle of dialogues, or his legs twitch a little.

Come to think of it, I've only noticed Jim's fingers and legs. I'll have to go back and check what Simon does. :p

I noticed it the first time I watched the show, do you mean where he twiddle his fingers together or holders his thumb and first finger all the time? I find myself asking all the time... is it part of the character, nerdy nervous maybe.. :)

Yeah, Simon is always fussling his fingertips around. I was looking at some BTS pics from an old EW article, I think, that were from the scene in the tuxedo shop and in the still of Simon, he's got his thumb kind of pressed up into his fingertips. I thought, "he was doing it right there, the thing with his fingers!" :D

Oh, and it's not a Wolowitz thing. If you watch the ComicCon panels, he does it then, too.

I think its Johnny/Leonard who does most of this nervous fingers things....It looks like his hands cannot leave each other :p

This. Johnny definitely added a hand-figgety quirk to Leonard. He almost always has his hands together, doing something with his fingers, which bugs me in a good way because I do it too. A lot.

Oh, my God! Leonard's constant, and I cannot overemphasize the word "constant" finger-fussling drives me absolutely bananas. It is the one and only thing about this show that I would change in a heartbeat if I could. I'd like to walk up to him and scream in his ear "PUT YOUR HANDS DOWN ! ! !"  And to this day I am honestly not sure whether it's Simon or Leonard doing it, although I strongly suspect that it's Simon. One other lesser issue is his constant, or nearly constant "Huh? Seriously?" look with furrowed forehead. That's a bit overdone.

Mayim has wiggly finger, at time, also. When she is sitting and has her hands on her knees, it looks like she is tapping her fingers. She also likes to shift her weight, moving her feet when she does so. Watch the tiara episode, when she gets to Penny's apartment when Sheldon is there. For her fingers, see Zazzy for a good example of this.

Yes I've notice that sometimes they are doing that. As someone mentioned that could be their way to remember their lines or somethink. I think once JP said that for him it is all about the rythm with which the lines are delivered so it could have to do with that. Either way I don't mind it. It is natural for people to have some movement or something that they do all the time without even thinking so it's fine for me.

In S11 E15 Howard is at the cafeteria and his hand is tremoring and in another cafeteria scene from the same episode he uses his other hand to keep his right arm still to use his fork. I only noticed this becasue I'm on a med that is causing me to tremor! Hope he is ok.

I've just watched it and it  looks to me as if he's not forking up his 'food because he's speaking. There are several eating scenes and he varies the gestures.

I think if he'd got Parkisons or something we'd have heard by now.
