Penny Finally Says I Love You To Leonard But Is It A Game Changer?

Recommended Posts

I personally do not find Penny and Raj upsetting because of a double standard, if Penny had slept with some other random guy it wouldn't have been nearly as upsetting. It's the idea of Raj, one of Leonard's best friends, sleeping with Leonard's ex girlfriend, in his own bed. And viceversa, Penny going along with it because of a little alcohol. And what lacked good taste for me, wasn't the act itself but the fact that in 5x01 we are meant to somehow feel better about it when we are told they didn't go through with it not because they realized it was a mistake but because Raj finished too soon. Really? That makes things better?  :icon_rolleyes:

Yeah. I can defend Penny but I got nothing for Raj since he was the only one conscious enough to remember what was going on. The hold thing was a massive mistake by the show's drivers. And the way they tried to salvage the mess at the start of season 5 was an embarrassment in damage control. After the firestorm from the fans it was like "Let throw something against the wall to calm these people down"

I think that this ILY from penny is exactly what both characters really needed to hear and will hopefully be the glue that keeps them together for a long time. On one hand we have penny who has long

Going back to the question about the ILY being a game changer. Yes and no. Yes, the fans wanted and even needed it, so in that sense It was very big. But to the writers, no it wasn't, it was just another baby step to improve Penny, because they made a big point about it being no big deal and we have seen this in the following episodes. I really think they are still keeping the option to break them up in the future, if helps the show. I really hope I am wrong.

Anything is possible but there is no upside to a break-up now. Besides ticking off millions of fans after all the positive progress in Season 6 that is helping bring in blockbuster ratings, there is no reason to reset their relationship back to near zero when there are all these couples issues to explore before they are married. They will most likely try living together, have Penny decide on her future career (we hope) and resolve the blending of families (Cue the face-off between Penny and Dr. Beverly Hofstadter).

The other reason they are not likely to break-up again is the growing dependance of Penny on Leonard. More and more Penny now orbits Leonard rather then the other way around. She now takes interest in his world, she has none of her own. She is going to school for him not for herself (she put little effort in her paper for history class). His friends are now her friends. She appears to either hate her job or has become disinterested. She has little initiative now and is very dependent on Leonard for validation. Leonard dares not give her anything but affirmation even for her crunchy spaghetti.

The ILY is a bright point on the L/P story arc this season and the next episode will be another. There is little sign that they are heading for anything but couple-hood. The "Relationship Drama" is most likely going to come from the Shamy.

I agree with those who say it's another baby step.  L/P will continue to have ups and downs but I think are on an overall trajectory to being OK.  I don't foresee a S/A breakup either; they're getting to a pretty stable place.  There are some interesting parallels between the two relationships, which the writers can use.  Sheldon and Penny are both struggling to grow up and not take their partners for granted, and shockingly Sheldon is doing better at that right now.  It would be pretty cool to have an episode in which Sheldon helps Penny learn to be a better girlfriend and Amy helps Leonard assert himself more.

My prediction is that the L/P relationship will move a bit into the background while Penny's education and career develop.

I always thought these 4 have a lot to learn from each other. I totally agree it'd be very interesting to have some dynamic develop along those lines. The parallels are particularly obvious for Penny and Sheldon. Penny is scared of commitment but great at displays of affection, Sheldon is great at commitment but scared of displays of affection. I think Sheldon would be more than happy to show off and distribute advice if he can make himself look superior, but it'd be hilarious to see him trying to reject Penny's advice even though he often seeks it when he's in trouble. Leonard always needs affirmation and Amy doesn't take any nonsense, so she could teach him that he doesn't have to bend over backwards just because he's scared Penny will dump him and that he can be secure in the relationship without needing constant affirmation and that he needs to learn to trust her because she's trying her best.

when you start talking too yourself like that, its a sign of going crazy. please get help. :icon_eek:

Actually, since he quoted you in the post you are referencing, it's quite obvious that he is quoting you. You either need to see an ophthalmologist(to recognize that there was writing preceding your comment), or look at one of the fine tutorials offered on the quoting function(to understand he wasn't talking to himself).

So, the most important thing a woman brings to a marriage is domestic servitude?!

Well Penny does not even have a professional career. She brings zilch except for a smart mouth and smoking body!!

She didn't SAY I love you. She let it slip out. Ofc I can see she is slowly developing stronger feelings for Leonard, which is more than expected - it's been SIX seasons now! But I seriously do not see their relationship working, she is too critical of him, she does not show feelings for him... Anyone else would've given up already!

Which is actually a more honest reaction.

And, so?

But I seriously do not see their relationship working, she is too critical of him,

Examples? I can provide refutations for your contentions.

You want to explain how that works to me? I waited around for my wife for almost as long. She even broke up with me at one point. So, tell me exactly how we've managed to stay married for more than thirty years, when according to you I should have given up.

Maybe you should've ;)

That's it?  I asked for an explanation and that's all you have?  No wonder you haven't presented any examples for your statements.  With this kind of statement, it's obvious you really don't have any support for your statements.   You just don't like Penny, for some reason, but you can't provide any cognizant reason for not liking her.

When american says I love you, it really does not mean anything.

It's like their other empty sayings, like

-Let's have lunch someday

-Let's do business

-I'll pray for you

Funny people, these americans. You can never know when they are being sincere...

I really hope that's a bazinga, because if not, it's really offensive.  I'm sure there are some Americans for whom "I love you" is insincere, but I've never heard it.  In fact, sometimes I think we don't say it nearly enough.  It becomes such a big deal that some people can hardly say it even when they feel it.  Your claim is a condescending incrediby rude blanket statement that is by the way completely untrue.  Your statement reflects badly on you.

Does he or she need a reason?  Who appointed you the opinion police around here anyway?

Well, they stated anyone else would have given up. I simply asked for an explanation of how that worked, cause I gave an actual example of someone who didn't give up. I was just wondering how they came to that conclusion. If you actually read the exchange, you may have understood that.
