They sure didn't nibble at that ratings record number. They blew by it by over three quarters of a million. That's 1990's ratings levels.

And the viewers got the big "ILY" payoff worthy of that many "eyeballs". Could not have been that many folks reading the spoiler thread. :icon_lol:

Ya know, I thought of that last week when the Live + 3 hit 20 million. Johnny was in a group interview thing (with other best actor nominees, but no Jim) a couple of years ago and was talking about how, on Rosanne (which was #1), they were disappointed if they didn't hit 30 Million. The others in the group were just shocked at that number. Well, back then, they didn't have, nor count DVR viewership. Not to mention the field is still even more fragmented than it was then. I'm expecting the Live + 3 to hit 21-22 million and the Live + 7 to get near 24 million. Which in this day and age is just astounding.

Rosanne regularly had over 30 million viewers!! Wow I would have never guessed, because I hardly watched the show because I thought it was boring most of the time. That show had more drama than TBBT. Makes me wonder about how there has been more relationship stories this season and the ratings have been going up. Also, the ILY episode has great ratings. Maybe the fans want more relationship drama?

Most people who tune in to watch the eps don't know much about what's going to happen or which characters are going to be in an ep except for what they may have seen in the CBS promo ads, etc.

Most people don't read or have access to spoilers and probably don't really keep track.

So they tune in to see what's going to happen, not necessarily because they want this or that or expect a particular story line, etc.

The ratings are what they are because people like the show in general and keep coming back for more. Whether they come back for relationship stuff, or humor, or individual characters/actors is hard to say.

The numbers that shows like Roseanne achieved would be really hard to acquire nowadays because there is more to choose from on TV than there was in those days.

I think that many people have probably stumbled across TBBT on TBS and/or their local channels (our Fox affiliate shows TBBT eps almost every night, either at 6-7pm or sometimes around 11:30pm) and then have come to check out the new eps.

I remember Jim Parsons talking back in 2010 or so about how the show's ratings have kind of grown on a steady upward climb and it seems like the show's popularity spreads from word of mouth.

Whatever the case, I think it's great that it just seems to be getting bigger each week without really having to pull any stunts.

Guest I'm not dead Cheryl

Relationship does not equal drama. I would hardly call the relationship storylines on this show as "drama" except for some LP, but even them I have a hard time labeling them as such, since the relationship stuff is played for laughs. Whether you find relationship storylines funny or not is a different story, but is not drama.

Example: Bold and The Beautiful = drama (my.mom watches that) ... TBBT = comedy.

I agree. In fact, in all these 6 seasons, TBBT has actually had very few dead-serious dramatic moments. This show specializes in treating everything - be it work mess-ups, personality quirks, relationship problems - with a breezy light-hearted touch that takes away much of the potential angst. It's one of the things I love about the show.

Yes--for all the deep analysis that may or may not go on for L/P or S/A, in the end it's still a comedy--with a sweet center and a sharp edge. :)

Eat your heart out Modern Family lol

I'd also like to say, "eat that" to the woman who was waiting in line for 2 Broke Girls while I waited for my first Big Bang taping earlier this year and she said, "...that show blows..." and she didn't think I could hear her. LOL.

I don't find the big number surprising. They really have done this well -- the show is in reruns everywhere, so people are able to catch up that have never seen it before, plus adding in the new characters brings a whole new dynamic that makes the show feel fresh. Plus, it is just so damn funny; and there's just not many shows out there that are this funny and unique, in my opinion.

I'm hoping that the big numbers will show all those tv execs out there that we want and need more good sitcoms again, like the old days. I am so sick of reality tv and game-like shows.
