Nogravitasatall Posted July 2, 2013 Posted July 2, 2013 Hey Molly, it only it what it it because of Sheldon, but he is the antagonist, most of the time. It's designed that way. He has his own story but usually, because of the hermetic setup, he thwarts other people's efforts and that's where they get the humour. friends for instance rarely had internal conflict that isn't romantic or just stupidly funny. Sheldon tries to control his roommate's bowels for goodness sake. And if Sheldon doesn't hit the viewer's "excuse me I'm cute" button, his antics aren't going to fly. He bullies people and acts without regard, and I suspect it resonates for some because they have met people who acted like that, who weren't cute or funny and whom they could not get away from. So when harmless Leonard gets the rough end of the pineapple, even though he forgives, his fans see Sheldon as the cause of their hero's woes and find it a bit harder to let go. But I like the roommate transmogrification because of its novelty so I can't speak for others really.
