Leonard And Penny Shippers Thread (Possible Spoilers)

Hey Molly, it only it what it it because of Sheldon, but he is the antagonist, most of the time. It's designed that way. He has his own story but usually, because of the hermetic setup, he thwarts other people's efforts and that's where they get the humour. friends for instance rarely had internal conflict that isn't romantic or just stupidly funny. Sheldon tries to control his roommate's bowels for goodness sake. And if Sheldon doesn't hit the viewer's "excuse me I'm cute" button, his antics aren't going to fly.

He bullies people and acts without regard, and I suspect it resonates for some because they have met people who acted like that, who weren't cute or funny and whom they could not get away from. So when harmless Leonard gets the rough end of the pineapple, even though he forgives, his fans see Sheldon as the cause of their hero's woes and find it a bit harder to let go.

But I like the roommate transmogrification because of its novelty so I can't speak for others really.

Well, I didn't care about the Gorilla episode so much, the one that I found really annoying, was at the airport at the end of the season. There was NO reason for Sheldon to be there!!! He wasn't funny he just detracted from the moment.

There are times that you don't need every character in a scene. That should have been a L/P scene, none of the other characters were needed.

The airport was too much for many people. It really wasn't funny. It seems to me there must be a certain amount of scenes he has to be in. What didn't make sense to me was that he was at the airport but didn't go with Penny to see Raj. For some reason TPTB couldn't go the final three scenes of the season without Sheldon. I'm the one that mentioned that L/P/S are the main characters but Sheldon definitely has more scenes than Leonard and Penny. Would have the show have been worse without Sheldon in the car scene or in the final three scenes?

Yeah I know, I can see how people may find him, as SRAM put it, as an asshole haha I'm just saying I have never felt like that towards him and it wasn't really because he is cute as you say but more so just because he is funny. The show wouldn't be the same if Leonard could go to the toilet whenever he wanted! Sheldon is one of the most unique characters ever put into a sitcom and that uniqueness is what I love, not only in him, but within the show. It is what drew me to the show in the first place. I would see little glimpses of it here and there and would always wonder what Sheldons deal was, and thats what pulled me in. Of course once i started watching i completely fell for L/P but still, if it hadnt been for Sheldon, i dont know if i would have ever decided to watch the show from the beginning. Take Sheldon and his antics away and TBBT just isn't the same. We need Sheldon and his weirdness! Haha

I can answer the bold with one word:  NO!

I too wonder why Sheldon was inserted in the Penny/Raj scene or the Penny/Bernie/Amy/Raj scene?  Why in the heck did the writers feel it was fine to insert the character in Leonard and Penny's final scene together.  It's like the writers just couldn't let Lenny 2.0 have that moment for so strange reason.   I know they love Sheldon even at the cost of the other characters sometimes they just need to understand Sheldon in overdrive is too much!

@Eirwinrommel, I was relieved they put him there, cos flagged it wasn't going to be a crisis. But I did not like what they made him do. He's supposed to be lacking perception and that makes us laugh but there was nothing funny going on at all with him there at all.

It's a matter of degree I think, then preference. He can't leave the show. But we can observe that he is an ass. Eta You give weight to his comedic contribution, others have issues with his assholery. It's a big tent at TBBT fan forum so it's ok.

I agree, just giving my opinion. I know we cant all like the same things! In general though, i don't think he is an ass, he has his moments, but over all he isn't as bad as he can sometimes be made out to be.

In regards to the finale car scene, i'm sure you wont be surprised to hear i wasn't too bothered by Sheldon being there! Haha! Maybe i'm just too easy going about this whole thing! Anyway, I think I was just kind of over the moon about the L/P interaction that we did get in that moment, that everything else in it just didn't really bother me. I will say that when i watch it back, it can be annoying that he keeps interuppting their moment, and the only reason i wouldn't take him out of it, is because when he says 'it's okay, they just love each other' i kind of melt inside! haha that being said, i totally agree that he didn't need to be there.

Really?  You can't just enjoy the humor?  It wasn't as if Leonard ran off to his bedroom to cry his eyes out or anything.

It wasn't just about Sheldon--it was about the juxtaposition of what Penny wanted and how it turned out.  Sheldon wasn't so much an incompetent teacher, but thinking and working on a different plane because he and Penny are on different planets in that regard.

Yeah, he taught Penny his opinion on Leonard's work, but in the end it's just humor, not a death sentence.

I thought it was hysterical.

No, for me the ending wasn't funny at all, and I very much believe that Sheldon ended up using Penny to belittle Leonard's work, without her even knowing that she was doing so, so double slimy IMO and not funny at all.

Okay so, i popped over to the Shamy thread and saw this thing they were doing so i sort of stole it and changed a few bits for over here. Really it's just something to get us moving past that whole thing we got into a little earlier on and bring the thread back to being about Leonard and Penny :) I think this will be a cool thing to do and i really want to see the different answers everyone will give, so yeah, i hope you all participate. :)

1: The moment you shipped them and why

2: Favorite Episode

3: Favorite touching moment (kiss, hug, hand-holding, etc.)

4: A moment that made you happy/surprised (your choice)

5: Most underrated moment

6: Favorite moment, during a time when they weren’t a couple

7: Best quote

8: Overall Appreciation

I will put mines up soon, i'm trying to write a chapter so want to try and get some of that finished before i wrack my mind to think of the answers for all of them! haha :)

For me, in S6 Sheldon had some rude awakenings for him. Krypke is smarter, equal to the others for tenure, and Leonard being recognized by Stephen Hawking for his work while he has a boner arithmetic mistake with Hawking.  He just kept getting more and more cruel with his comments and with no other purpose than to prop up his on ego.

As far as the airport scene, I looked at it a little differently.  Lenny is together with I love yous despite Sheldon.

As far as the airport scene, I looked at it a little differently.  Lenny is together with I love yous despite Sheldon.

I still don't understand where people get the idea that Kripke is suddenly smarter than Sheldon.  Sheldon had a moment of panic where the assumed Kripke was smarter than him just because of the difference in their work on one project, but Leonard's comments are the truth of this situation--that Kripke is not smarter than Sheldon, but just that Sheldon got stuck on a wrong path.

Sheldon loves to panic over such things--like in the episode with that Dennis Kim kid, he assumes the kid is smarter than him (and he may or may not be), and then when he momentarily forgets the name of the composer Salieri and Howard provides it, he says that now even Howard is smarter than him, or in this Kripke episode, when Leonard figures out Sheldon's trick with the thermometer, Sheldon says the same thing--oh great, even you're smarter than me.

In reality, none of these things is true.  Just because Sheldon has a momentary set-back doesn't mean that he's suddenly lost IQ points and that Kripke (or Howard or Leonard) have suddenly gained them.

And I don't think Sheldon's comments are any crueler than they were in the early seasons of the show.  He has always looked down on the others--just as they have always regarded him as a crazy person.

They all have their strengths and weaknesses.  The other guys have all had their selfish, rude moments toward each other, have made fun of Sheldon to his face, and so forth.

None of them takes Sheldon and his jibes seriously and they are all still friends and care about each other.

Homework. Lol.

1. At Hi

2. The Roommate Transmogrification, because they transcended this

3. When Penny offers to take of all her clothes while assembling Ikea furniture (so moving).

4. The lab scene with the holograph. (Though I think it was special effects)

5. When they both took Sheldon outside and hit him with sticks like he was a piñata.

6. The tuna boat hat scene.

7. Leonard: It’s a snowflake. From the North Pole.

Penny: Are you serious?

Leonard: Uh-huh. It’ll last forever. I preserved it in a one percent solution of polyvinyl acetal resin.

8. Never in my years have I shipped any couple. I've enjoyed but never shipped.

Is this pass/fail?

Eta. This is just the first draft. Maybe one or two I'd change on reflection.

To multiple prior postings on Sheldon:

1.  Sheldon is essential to the show - always has been, always will have to be.  And he has to be Sheldon.

2.  I'd have preferred Leonard and Penny have their own moment at the airport without Sheldon.  Leonard could have asked him to step outside on the sidewalk for a minute - then Sheldon wouldn't have to worry about being arrested or something.  But that's my romantic side, and we know this show is a comedy and I think the writers were faced with a bit of a dilemma.  I thank them for giving us L&P fans the ILY from Penny that we've been waiting for (and Kaley really did it nicely, no?).  So how, they wondered, were they going to keep that scene from becoming an overemotional Kleenex moment?  Insert Sheldon.  And, as developed over the series, he's sometimes been Leonard & Penny's precocious child, as he acted in the backseat of Penny's car.  Could the writers have tempered the emotion with other comedy in a better way?  Maybe.  And for all L&P fans, we know they had 2 weeks before he left to talk stuff over and get closer as he prepared to leave, so if we give the characters life, then we have to believe that those few minutes in the car weren't the sum total of their goodbye.

Overall, Sheldon is funny - sometimes hysterical.  I love watching his reaction to Howard's impersonations in that episode near the end of Season 6.  Just look at his face and how he laughs (I did too - Howard can really do Al Pacino well).  Looking at it from "real life" we can, a lot us, wish Sheldon would just go away.  But we have to admit that he is a core ingredient to the show.  Which is why I have previously said that, as the characters mature and grow, they have to be careful how much maturing they give Sheldon.

Oh, I agree Sheldon in essential to the show, I think all the actors are essential to the show now too, I would really feel something is missing if one of them left.  He just gets on my nerves sometimes so much, I wish someone would bitch-slap him.  I really got a kick of that one scene when Leonard left his bed and then you hear a smack afterwards and you know Leonard smacked him, it was great.

I wish Sheldon would have just shut up when they were saying their ILY's, it was really touching and Kaley's ILY, then that hug she did, were really perfect, she nailed it.

Howard's impression were awesome, I hope he does more of them in season 7.

Fail.  :p You didn't write why you ship them and the 'touching' moment was supposed to be like an intimte moment you liked. For example, mines would be the hug they shared before Leonard went to the North Pole. The one that lasted 'at least 5 mississippis' haha It was stolen from the Shamy thread so the 'touching' part was probably put in because of Sheldon haha Anyway, take this back home and rethink your answers!

(I'm just kidding by the way. Glad you participated :) )

7.  Penny: You think he’ll notice?

     Leonard: There’s a chance.

Penny: Oh, what are we gonna do?

Leonard: We? No, no, no, you had your chance to be we for, like, a year and a half now. Right now, you are you, and you are screwed.

Not cool dude... Not cool... <_<

I've never been cool. That's why I'm here. But I do find the unlikely match between Penny and Leonard attractive and my inclinations run that way, supporting the underdog against the cool. I went to Supernova in costume as Leonard. But no one noticed cos it just meant I wore the recycled t shirt. I already have the glasses and height. And my hot wife is brunette, but would have been out of my league when I was a teenager. However she is the studious one, she has a BA, MA and is doing her Ed D. She also a post cert qualified nurse and now a university lecturer. She did all her education as an adult and has three kids and has worked full time. So when people scoff at Penny for her education I think well its about opportunity.

and that's why I like the couple. They resonate.

ETA. I'm closer to Penny than Leonard in many regards. But i can be annoyingly pedantic and drop factoids like Leonard used do. And I'm sure i'd rock an lbd. Lol. (that's just not true)

2. 43 Peculiarity

6. When Leonard was Telling Penny to stay away because of Priya and he walks into the door.

Every joke is not funny for everyone...it's a shame that such simple fact escapes you

It's simple that the writes ignored the Leonard-Penny issue of that story......and this is not about shipping or shamy or lenny or shenny.........would'nt Leonard want to know what she why she did....and how Penny feels after her trying to impress Leonard...

You say it was an excuse to build the sheldon-penny , I say the writers completely ignored the Leonard-Penny aspect of the story....which I don't think is such a hard thing to grasp given the premise it was built on....

And if there was no Sheldon , I don't think they would have made it this far..

I think there lies the ultimate problem. You weren't expecting much of a L/P interaction. Many others were since Leonard was going away. Especially since the Shamy had their "moment" in Love Spell and it was only interrupted temporarily by a knock on the door. What if L/P decided to go into Sheldon's room and interrupted D&D. I'm guessing people wouldn't of liked that.

It wasn't so much that i wasn't expecting much L/P interaction. Trust me i wanted a lot more than we got, but what we got was so good that i was happy with it anyway. Penny's reaction when she found out he was leaving was lovely. It was supportive yet you could still see that she didn't want him to go and the car scene was just brilliant. They way Penny sort of timidly told him she loved him and the way it was acted out by both Kaley and Johnny, made me not too bothered about Sheldon being in the back. I think Love Spell is different. That was a real pivotal moment for the Shamy, much like the 'I love you' scene was for us. Neither of those scenes got interuppted because they were too important. Our '43 peculiarity' scene and their 'Love Spell' scene were sort of on a parrallell because they both signaled a huge change in the relationships. The car scene didn't change much. Yes we got the 'I love you' from Penny again, but it has to be assumed that that had already been said plenty of times between them, it was just the first time we were getting to see it, so it wasn't a huge shifting moment in their relationship, thats why the comedy was there too. Anyway, i'm not saying people are wrong for not liking how that scene was played out because of Sheldon being there, because i can understand why some are, i'm just saying it didn't have that much of an effect on me. :)

Now on to this thing!

1: The moment you shipped them and why: I would say probably after the Halloween episode. That one really showed to me how far Leonard would go to impress Penny, by standing up to the fearsome giant! The kiss right at the end was very sweet too.

2: Favorite Episode: This is a hard one because it changes constantly! But it's a toss up between The 43 Peculiarity, The Holographic Excitation and The Recombination Hypothesis

3: Favorite touching moment (kiss, hug, hand-holding, etc.): Their hug just before he goes to the North Pole. That really long one that lasted 'at least 5 mississippis' :)

4: A moment that made you happy/surprised (your choice): When Leonard asked her out again in The Recombination Hypothesis. I was both happy and surprised because i really didn't expect Leonard to go out on a limb and ask her out again, but i was sooo happy he did, and that she said yes! :)

5: Most underrated moment: Kinda random but i love the bed scene in the episode where Sheldon goes all crazy and they get woken up in the middle of the night by Leonards joker ringtone. 'Leonard your giggling in your sleep'. Its very cute.

6: Favorite moment, during a time when they weren’t a couple: The lime kiss. Nothing else needs to be said. That was just awesome.

7: Best quote: I'm going to have to go for 'Our babies will be smart and beautiful' Oh and, Leonard: 'I promise i will never propose to you again.' Penny: 'What? Are you breaking up with me?' I love that moment, it's when they really came full circle and sort of equal in their relationship, IMO.

8: Overall Appreciation: This couple inspired me to start writing when i had never thought of it before. Thats gotta mean something right? haha They are just incredibly adorable and I know it's been said before but i really love that they aren't similar in any way really. They are two completely different people from completely different walks of life and yet now, after being with each other no one else is really good enough for them.

Molly, this is where appreciation begins. Where one sees something done that one can't do near as well. Makes me feel downright heartless and less competent. You even write a great list.

I'm going in holidays. Or maybe just to bed. Lol. Hahaha. :)

(note absence of sarcasm).
