Guest DroneInTheSun Posted April 6, 2013 Posted April 6, 2013 I love Sheldon's little touch of Amy's arm to get her attention. It's sweet the way he sort of sweeps her arm with his fingers so gently. In any case, one of the places I started in terms of forums that talk about the TV shows I like and all was Television Without PIty, which right now has a list of character who they used to love but now hate, and to my surprise, Bernadette is on it. I still love Bernadette, but one of the things they mentioned about her temper going overboard was when she took her Cinderella rant out on the girls. Which was interesting to me, because that particular instance of her temper couldn't be put down to defending Howard on the parking spot issue, nor fighting with Howard because he's done something immature and stupid. It was just her own selfish desire to be Cinderella and not let the other girls be here too if they wanted to be. As with Raj's comment towards Amy, or Penny's looks of superiority over being the hotter girl, or Sheldon's generally dismissive comments in this episode, or even Howard deliberately enjoying riling his friends up to fight amongst each other (I don't recall Howard ever trying to pit all of his friends against each other in a fight for him to enjoy before), I do have to admit that I feel everyone seems a little meaner at the end of this season. For a show which has always gotten by on it's sweetness and charm, I think I'm still just a little thrown by all of this. Nevertheless, one thing I would note is that it's definitely something across the board, not just with Sheldon and Amy that is making me go, "What the hell, SHOW?" So there is that. But seriously, "What the hell, SHOW?" Great point. Especially sad, coming so soon after the gorgeous ensemble episode The Closet Reconfiguration. They all were so united around Howard. Superlovelexi Posted April 6, 2013 Posted April 6, 2013 (edited) I think people's concerns for each of the couples have some valid points, but I've come to expect it that on sitcoms just like on well most tv shows there are hills and valleys. Personally overall I think this season is one big HILL in big bang theory as a show its reach some of the highest ratings ever, got more nominations than ever for awards and in my personal opinion this season has had some of the funniest and most heart warming episodes in the shows history. And some really big moments for each of the main couples as well, Penny finally saying I love you, sheldon finally say sex with AMy is a possiblity, Raj finally getting courage to ask a girl out on a date and finding ways to talk to her sober. Howard continuing to be romantic by spending hours to make a V-day present for Bernie and how quickly they make up now after bickering like an old married couple already. I know not everything is perfect or funny, or even likeable this season. Within the season there have still been moments of bad dialogue, failed jokes and periodic regression of thecharacters back to being more selfish and acting immature in ways that make me and I'm sure lot of people here go or worst even and But, each season I've felt has been that way. There are episodes I love and still find super hilarious and heartwarming from each season and replay constantly either on my DVR or check out clips of them on Youtube all the time. And then there are episodes from each season that when i pass by and see them on TBS I keep right on channel surfing because I saw them already and didn't find them that funny so I feel no desire to rewatch often. The ones that irritate me the most are the ones when Sheldon is being way too over the top selfish and mean in opinion, like the Physics Bowl episode with Leslie Winkle or one from this season would be when he played Word with Friends with Stephen Hawking and was really rude to his real friends especially to Leonard. I consider Sheldon my favorite character with Amy a close second and so it doesn't make feel good to see Sheldon be mean to her at all or when he acts like he has no interest in her besides making her into a girl verison of Leonard in his life who he keeps around to worship his genius and drive him places. I want characters I like the most to be most likeable I think everyone feels that way about the characters they enjoy on TV. But, then other times I come on message boards and read how some one else really enjoyed an episode I didn't think was all that great and although it doesn't make me necessarily start liking that episode, at least it makes me think okay well if someone liked it then I guess it can't suck that much! lol i mean everyone has different opinions and different ideas they'd like to see happen or not happen on show and there is no way writers can please all of us all the time, but I try to focus on what I do like in an episode more than what I don't and if show ever got so bad that I stopped laughing all together or characters were so mean to each other I stopped liking them altogether I wouldn't keep bitching about it on message boards forever I'd just quit watching the show. Because i personally don't see point in making other people who still like it feel bad because I don't like it anymore. People who do that just come off looking like jerks in my opinion. So its totally fine to vent our frustrations/annoyances about an episode, character, scene etc...but I also realize we can't go back and erase it either or unwatch it. We can't get what we want all the time and if we bitch and whine about it all time then it really makes us no better than bitchy and whiny characters on show that we are complaining about now does it? Its like when Leonard ask Howard and Sheldon to help him come up with a way to get more women in science at first they bitched and whined but then shortly after they got over it and helped him and it was really funny to see them all go talk to those students at the end. Sheldon even managed to throw in a nice compliment about Amy and Bernadette when he called them two BRILLIANT, female scientists and I liked that he recognized that when they were failing to inspire these young women, that perhaps Amy and Bernadette could do a better job at it so it goes to show you right there just how much he does secretly respect women and like them. So I try to do same with the show. When something annoys me I bitch a little bit just like everyone else, just like Sheldon did, but then I try to look for the postive and find alternative solution instead of just continuing to whine forever and still not be happy. I mean we can't force ourselves to like something if we don't, but we can choose to dwell on what we don't like or dwell on what we do and i personally rather do the latter especially with this show. Because the Big Bang Theory is now the number one comedy in America and I know why, because ITS FUNNY AS HELL!! Even the stupid repeat jokes are funny sometimes, and there has yet to be an episode where I didn't laugh at least once at something someone said, and so thats pretty good record they have with me. And from reaction and comments i heard from other fans at the Paleyfest panel i know I'm not the only one who feels this way so that makes me happy as well. Just like it makes me happy and lets be honest it does sometimes that when I don't like something on the show and it annoys me and I read comments that have other people saying basically same thing I didn't like it either that also makes me feel better about it cause it means I'm not alone. if bunch of us hated something, well that means it probably did kind of suck and if a lot of liked it then it means it was pretty awesome. and even this board and no other out there can truly represent what all 19 mil+ people that watch this show think, the fact that each week the rating for episodes seem to always have more Excellents or Very Good or Good then Very Bad is a good sign that people like what they see. And whatever we don't like well next time you watch the episode just skip that part you hate or don't watch it at all thats what i always do. Analyzing the show and the couples relationships is fun,and when things go downhill its okay to be upset. I don't think people have right to tell people not to be upset. But, i just think its healthier to focus on the postive over the negative and I think there was lot more postiive this season with SHAMY than negative and there still is because not only are they still together, but relationship has grown so much I mean just. Look how far they've come already! Amy use to believe dating, romance and love were ridiculous cultural constructs and only did them to please her mother and get use of her grill. Now she wants to marry Sheldon and have babies with him lol. Sheldon originally only met up with her because he was being blackmailed by Raj and he use to do super immature things like remove the number from building and put on disguises just to avoid her when he thought she wanted more of a relationship and now look he went from that to ASKING HER to be his girlfriend and then they've gone all way from that to Sheldon being willing to help Amy Bath, rub her chest and even contemplate sexual intercourse as possiblity despite his disapproval of coitus. He touches her more now and most importantly no longer just runs away when things get serious between them. Now Sheldon actually tries to talk things through with Amy and reach a compromise with her and even get her opinion on things before he makes a decision. THAT IS CALLED PROGRESS!! I mean I can't wait til season 8 or 9 when we will likely still be complaining about something stupid Sheldon has said to Amy and how mean he is being meanwhile they'll be in bed having sex in the same scene right before he says whatever stupid thing that gets him kicked out of bed and makes us all mad at him for being a jerk again LOL. He'll probably even say something rude and offensive to her on their wedding day and some will hate it while others will still be laughing at what he said because it'll still be sort of funny. Things will change and get better, but they will also stay the same and keep driving us nuts too and thats what sort of like LIFE makes the show funny. Lionne Posted April 7, 2013 Posted April 7, 2013 (edited) HAPPY 400 PAGES EVERYONE! I know that there's been a lot of discussion and some disagreement lately. And even better, there's been some bitching and, my favorite, the bitching about the bitching. Nevertheless, it's overall been a thrilling and fun discussion, and no way have I remotely given up on Pasadena's favorite power couple: THE SHAMY! They are still the best, and there's still a long road to go with those crazy kids. I look forward to it, celebrations, disagreements, WTF moments, and more. Much love to you all! Now let's put on our party hats and gab our noise makers and have a little merriment to reflect on how far we've come. 400 pages of Shamy love, baby! delsino Posted April 7, 2013 Posted April 7, 2013 (edited) ^The actors that play Ron Weasley and Draco Malfoy in Harry Potter I was re-watching Tenure Turbulance and does anyone else find it interesting that when Sheldon was smack-talking to Raj he says "Last night I was feeling in need of sexual release when I happened to come across you mother" instead of just saying "Last night I came across your mother" I like to think it was a Freudian slip of sorts Edited April 7, 2013 by delsino

tmp Posted April 7, 2013 Posted April 7, 2013 I agree with Spook about the scripts being rushed. There's a good chance they just think it's funny and aren't trying to build tension. The sharpness in the lines is a bit much, but I can't really see the writers thinking it's a big crisis. We need Tara!!
koops Posted April 7, 2013 Posted April 7, 2013 Tara is on 6x21. Speaking of scripts being rushed, I've rewatched the episode a few times, and while I can overlook most things, this exchange I just cannot bring myself to overlook. "Do they know you don't stand a chance because you're so great?" "You know, I go back and forth on this boyfriend/girlfriend thing, but these moments when you worship me really keep you in the running." Of course, the obvious one is Sheldon's line, which we have discussed at length. But what also ticks me off is the line they gave Amy. Amy has gushed over Sheldon in the past, but it's usually to others. And it was always more of a smitten kind of gushing than just flat out, cheerleader worship, right in his face. The way the line is written is also very lame. The only way I can think of that a sentence phrased like that would work and not sound like it's out of some bad fanfic is if Amy meant that sarcastically. But from the tone of voice used and the body language I'm not even sure it was meant to be like that. Or was it?
Catlina Posted April 7, 2013 Posted April 7, 2013 (edited) I have some questions I have pondered on my own, but I write them down here if someone has ideas how to approach the current paradigm of their relationship. So the question what he said to Amy in the last episode, that he finds coitus ridiculous and off-putting... I'm aware of the context of throw-away lines, but... I wonder what is exactly the root in his mind for thoughts like that? What happened in his early life that he is now so fobic of germs and touching and especially all touching in a romantic context? Why romance, sex and sexual things are so bad in his sight? Could it be the upbringing (too strict christianity?) he had as a child, the traumatic circumstances in which he grew up or is just something he invented on his own? He has seen his parents marriage as an example of marriage, and we all know that wasn't the happy one. Is it the only examply he has seen? So that's partly the reason why he is so negative about romantic relationship and all that what it includes? Could it help that he has now seen Howard and Bernadette somewhat happy in their own marriage? I hope at some point he will change his mind over having coitus with Amy. He must have seriously thought about it, since 6x14. Otherwice it wouldn't have been possible for him to say what he said then. Has he been thinking it in details or just overall thinking? Like, when it could happen, how it could happen, where it could happen, why it could happen, what could happen if it happened and so on. I don't know if his mind has went over there yet, if hasn't, it should go there for Amy's sake at some point, because they have made it really clear Amy wants deeper physical relationship with him. If they depict his mind won't go there, at least I would like to see them equally happy in their relationship where they can both rejoice being in that relationship, whatever kind it is and not Amy being somewhat repressed all the time by Sheldon. That option would have been possible if they had kept Amy more nerdy-Amy, so Sheldon could have stayed more nerdy-Sheldon, so everyone could have been happy? However, I would love to see an episode where they revealed some more about about his thinking of having coitus with Amy or just more closer physical relationship. That he would want to kiss her, touch her, an so on and not to be so reluctant all the time for her. Another question I had is, why Amy told us story that Sheldon had cancelled (or tried to cancel) their date night for trimming his q-tips in the last episode. Did it mean Sheldon had tried to cancel their date night and not to mention the real reason (the funeral) or was it an earlier case? Did they want to make a point how tedious Sheldon feels their date nights now are - he wants to cancel them for such ridiculous reasons. He really finds to trim his q-tips be better time using than to be with his girlfriend that he is supposed to love or be very fond of? And Sheldon's comparison between the funeral and their date night wasn't nice, I got the impression that his point was that he finds their date nights as tedious as the funeral or almost like it. Well I assume the writers do this on purposes we have discussed earlier, but I don't find it fascinating story telling - I just feel sad and sorry for Amy. If the writers want to make a point that Sheldon finds their date nights tedious then it seems that Sheldon probably thinks also that Amy is tedious, right? And where they want to head for with this in their relationship, is another question. To make Amy frustrated and make humour out of it? To write a big drama? To make point how hard for Sheldon is to win his childhood issues and wrong thinking of things? To write a longer story arc of how their relationship progress through more difficult times? In any case I sense and feel they cannot go this current path for very long. Amy is such an angel to stay by his side in current situation, so she must really be in love with him. And I think deep down Sheldon is also in love with her, but he is still working on his issues. How eagerly he is working on his issues, is another question. Where does he want to go now? What is his goal? If to be the man he wanted to be for Amy, the follow-up question would be, what kind of man he wanted to be for her - a man who loves her? Can be physical with her? Wants to touch her, hold her, kiss her? Would he like to be his husband one day? (Amy's reference in the episode to move further in his life...) I really wouldn't want to see him to reverting back to what he used to be - and if they take that route it would make either belittle Amys precence in the show or wonder why they brought her in the show in the first place. It isn't now for saving time - if they really plan for marriage Sheldon has still much to learn and process, and such backtracking and reverting back to previous Sheldon wouldn't help it, or what do you think? If the line by Amy was meant to be sarcastically they should have added a sarcasmus sign. Because IF that is the case it is hard to see. What keeps me thinking is Amy's bodylanguage and facial expressions in the total scene. It seems very calm and repressed. The way she looks when she puts the fork to her mouth and everything. I can't get a real grip of it. But I think it is great acting and there is a message in it.
