The Shamy Thread! (Season 6 Edition-Spoilers)

I think bostrich (where you at, bostrich?!?!) hit the nail on the head several months ago when he said that it seems that Sheldon doesn't get it when it's out of context, if he doesn't know that sex is what everyone is talking about.  Like at the end of the Dead Hooker episode, where they hear the girl's bed squeaking upstairs and his first thought, primarily because he's thinking in terms of noise, as he was throughout the episode, was that she was jumping on the bed, not that she and her producer hook-up were having sex, which is, of course, what everyone else thought.

But when he knows the conversation is about sex, or if he himself were to initiate the conversation, then he's more likely to pick up on innuendo or slang.  But not always--in Herb Garden when he and Amy are talking about their pretend sexual exploits and she says "penetration", he catches the potential pun (perhaps because "penetration" is a pretty clinical term in sexual parlance) but when he says "blow-by-blow" and Amy asks him, "Pun intended?" it goes right over his head.

He seems to have a pretty narrow vein of sexual awareness.  Most of the time he's not thinking about sex, and so his mind doesn't go there unless something very explicit or direct is mentioned.  Just as you can say the word "balls" in front of most children and they think about a round bouncy toy, not a slang word for a part of the male anatomy.

I'm sure Sheldon heard such terms at various points when he was growing up, but for a number of reasons, his mind never got fully into that sexualized mode.

As for the characters falling back on their quirks, to me it's that part of series TV that will always be both a blessing and a curse--the more things change, the more they stay the same.  You can't change too much too fast without growing out of your original premise.

As it is, they've grown considerably, but they can't outgrow their flaws without leaving their nerdvana behind.  If they were to get past those things we wouldn't have the "nerd struggles", etc., that the show was built upon.

I'm all about characters having quirks. That's what makes the show. Quirks are those things that make you who you are and, even though you may be made aware of them and how they annoy others, it is not something you can really change. (Person example: I have a quirk where the more nervous I get, the more jokes I crack. It doesn't matter what is going on. I could be on a date, in a job interview, on trial for murder--I am still going to be the chick cracking jokes. I am aware of this and how much I shouldn't do it, but I will do it until I am dead. I, likewise, have an issue with being unable to stop correcting spelling and grammar mistakes. I also have a problem digressing when I talk--but I digress.) Show example: Sheldon--no matter what happens to him--is always going to love order, cleanliness, and be more than a little neurotic. But Penny's intelligence--or lack thereof--doesn't fall into this category. She is remarkably more educated than she was at the beginning of the series just by hanging out with these guys all the time. But, during the Professor Proton episode, they dumbed her down again for the sake of the joke. THIS is what annoys me.

But I don't think that any of that qualifies as them "flanderizing" anyone on the show.

They may fall back on some aspect of a character to bolster the humor, but I think it still falls within the scope of the characters.  Even with Penny, she is more savvy about certain kinds of science-y stuff--like she knows about Shroedinger's Cat, and she knows more about Star Trek than she ever wanted to know, but that doesn't mean she understands things like the potato clock or the principles behind it.

I've got a masters degree and I'd never heard of the potato clock thing and wouldn't have been able to guess how to make it.  Now, I wouldn't have suggested hooking up Proton's pacemaker to it, but in that she was actually trying to make some kind of logical/mechanical connection.

So I didn't see her being suddenly dumber than usual.  It's just that she was pretty much completely out of her element as far as what the guys know about that kind of science and what they know specifically about Professor Proton and the kinds of experiments he would do.

She was still her normal self as far as empathy and concern were involved.

Also during hiatus, we will be starting a week from tomorrow a hiatus fanfic chat.   I am working on details now, but will be posting them soon.  It will be during the evening, probably late in the evening for most so that we can catch overseas folks as well.   I will post more details and time of the event during the week.  Just make note on your calendars for now!

Keep an eye on the Texas Instruments website and Devry University websites because she often has speaking schedules on there when she is doing something for them.   TI had advertised about her going to Texas. I am so sorry you missed her.   I was annoyed I could not see her when she came here to Denver but I am not a teacher so I would not have been able to attend the event she was at anyway.  It just was annoying to know she was so close and yet so far...haha :icon_twisted:

Thanks for the heads up! :] It's just shocking because I live in such a boring part of the world lol. We rarely get celebrities through here, much less someone from my favorite TV show and one half of Shamy! I love Mayim, but I'm glad it was her and not Jim that visited Tech, or I would have a heart attack (IDK why Jim would come visit a college, but still). And yes it's very annoying. I saw on youtube she was doing a meet and greet... literally feet away from me. Oh well. :icon_rolleyes:

You know how in French we can translate "you" to either "tu" or "vous" (and in Spanish it's "tu" and "usted" and I don't know about any other language but I bet there are plenty that stress this difference), and I was wondering, in French, when would the Shamy go from "vous" to "tu" (for those who don't know, "tu" is much more intimate, you use it with close friends and relatives).
Like, when did they realise they were past the polite and safe "vous" to tread into the emotional territory of the "tu"? Because it always says a lot in a movie when the ~couple~ goes from "vous" to "tu"...

Is that an age thing too though? I always thought that those kind of difference also depend on the age of the person. Like, if you're the same age and young you wouldn't use the formal "you"?

Yes, definitely not. Little kids saying "vous" to each other would be so weird. :p But when they meet the Shamy is well past the age of saying "tu", even if they have the same age.

Early twenties is okay, especially if you meet like a bar or a night club. But from mid-twenties, it's "vous", unless you're introduced by a mutual friend and decide from the go that you're going to say "tu", but you have to ask the person if that's okay with them first.

Oh no, that would have been muuuuch earlier. Two years is way too long, and besides she's his gf.

And I checked - it's "vous" in the coffee shop and "tu" after that.

For a long time though, they spoke to each other in such a clinical way, at least until they were officially boyfriend/girlfriend. I may be alone in this, but I wouldn't have described them as intimate at all at least until after they were officially a couple.

Parsons' 'Favorite' Addition

Parsons says the addition of Bialik's Amy stands out as his "favorite thing that's happened in the past year and a half of the show." "The introduction of Amy as a character has brought many possibilities for Sheldon. I enjoy working with Mayim and it would be my personal preference that she never be allowed to work with anybody else," he says with a laugh. "She should do all her scenes with me! That said, it wouldn't be good for her or the show and in the end it wouldn't be good for me but that's how much I enjoy playing those scenes with her in all their different and strange forms."

While this is a while ago, I have always loved this quote.  It is one of my all time favorite quotes by any cast member.   It makes me smile every time I read it.   MaJim are so adorable.
