Lionne Posted May 29, 2013 Posted May 29, 2013 I only played D&D once or twice - due to a boyfriend, natch - although normally I would play on my computer while the rest of them table-topped the D&D. I did get more into playing White Wolf, which is another role-playing system, although they use a 10-sided die. But I can tell you that in some of the systems of White Wolf there were body parts associated with the numbers on the die, I think. I remember that one guy I was dating was playing in the Werewolf system, and he got into a major battle in which someone inflicted a war wound on him - some magical scar that would not heal. He had to roll to figure out where the scar was, and lucky him, he rolled the right number to correspond to being castrated. He was not happy - and even retired the character, and was very mad at the people who ran the game, but their defense was that it was all the numbers, and there was nothing they could do. I really would not be surprised if D&D had something in their combat system were numbers were associated to certain body parts, which means you would roll to see what you were successful in hitting, or not, in combat. Possibly, or possibly not. Sheldon could have been making it all up, or more likely, the show made it up to suit the dialogue. I have no argument with that at all - it worked, the scene was brilliant, so I'm going to mark "all fair" on the play. Anyway. I am now not only with internet where I am staying (there have been some delays with my move....trying to get new carpet installed is a nightmare) but I managed to sprain my ankle this weekend. (Wish it while doing something exciting, like playing tennis or "capture the flag," but it wasn't. I was simply out getting some new art supplies so I could do some sketching at home and....whoops, hole in the sidewalk where they decided to plant a tree. Stepped into it while trying to sidestep an oncoming hoarde of teenagers in basketball uniforms.) I am telling you all this just to note that, my apologies, but I am completely behind in the Shamy-verse and if I repeat something or other it's because I cannot hope to go back and catch up at this point. There is no possible way I could, really. So please forgive.

I'm sure you'll be very relieved to get moved in finally. Feel better soon! P.S. Would love to have seen the look on the guy's face when the dice said his character had been injured there. Catlina Posted May 29, 2013 Posted May 29, 2013 Yes, my point was never to point out that Sheldon will/could be romantic in a conventional sense, just like everybody else is. I think that is very obvious. But my question was that how they could portray him "romantic", in his ways, so in what ways in practice. Is the scientific approach the only possible? I don't think so if we consider the Dungeons & Dragons game. It's a complicated question, but to get forward in their relationship, I think some kind of romance is required for them. And, romantic feelings is another thing than romantic deeds. Sheldon is a human being (isn't he) so he must have some sort of feelings of attachment to Amy at least, if "romantic feelings" is sounds too heavy for Sheldon. But I think physical contact in context of love always includes romantic feelings too. It is a question only, how does Sheldon feel these feelings to Amy and how could he express them in deeds in the future. We haven't seen much him expressing his feelings to her, but it's an interesting question what can happen in season 7. What I think, a romantic deed for Sheldon could be to take Amy with him, not to tell where they are going and surprise - they are going to have their both brain scanned together when they are holding hands for example and see what's happening in their brains. Although we don't know yet what it will be and how how the writers want to show it, but it is interesting to puzzle it. From the beginning of series, who would have thought that mighty Sheldon Cooper would have a real girlfriend one day? And to consider getting intimate with her? If this question was asked in season 1-2, many people would have probably only laughed and said "never ever that would happen". So I try not to underestimate (or overestimate) the writers what may come for Shamy and how they will portray Sheldon "sheldon-romantic". Catlina Posted May 29, 2013 Posted May 29, 2013 Chloe made this one and it killed me a little a lot: This is way too cute and sweet. I'm melting. And that hand hold there... It is the cutest thing after their kiss in 4x21 for me. Love the exchange of looks there and and Sheldon's subtle smile to her. He clearly has deep feelings for her, more than mere cerebral crush... There is no possible way I could, really. So please forgive. Someone had posted on here (it's either in the episode thread or somewhere buried in this thread) about some role-playing game rules that do use dice to designate body parts for combat, just as your boyfriend learned, to indicate where one might be wounded, to try to make it more realistic. If you get hit for 3 points on your arm, it's going to affect you differently than if you take a 3-point hit to the head--or to the testicles... But in D&D those rules aren't generally part of the game, unless it's something that has been added in these later editions. I'm hoping to go to Arizona for my radiation treatment this summer, so I might have to make my bro-in-law pull out his D&D game so I can see how it's played nowadays. But the way I learned, there was never a designation for specfic body parts. People who are into RPG in other forms might import such rules into D&D, but I don't think it's part of the normal way one plays. I do agree, though, that it was used for laughs and to make a point, which is how they've always used any of the games they play on the show. It's a platform or a means to an end used to tell the story at hand, not the point unto itself.

rachelshamyfan Posted May 29, 2013 Posted May 29, 2013 OK I have another request though this time its a Jim thing, if you remember back in s1 the beginning of the episode where Sheldon got sick and he's trying to psych out Leonard in the chess game? Oh I want that look, pretty please, can't find anything and I know there's people who can dig deep
