Catlina Posted June 12, 2013 Posted June 12, 2013 Just watched the Beta test initation yesterday. What I really like in that episode, it shows how comfortable Sheldon is there spending his spare time with Amy. How they are doing Fun with flags and watching Doctor Who together on their couch. I believe Sheldon really enjoyed his time with Amy doing those things, so relaxed and comfortable he seems to be there sitting next to her. He is not "on alert" anymore around her at that point. I noticed a little detail that I hadn't noticed before, there were pillows set against Amy's back too when they watched Doctor Who, just like Sheldon has his pillow. I think Sheldon had asked Amy would she like to have pillows to support her back? He wants to make his girlfriend feeling comfortable too at his apartment. Since I don't remember these pillows from any other episode where Amy sits next to Sheldon on their couch. I don't know if Amy would have asked for pillows by herself. And Amy is really patient with Sheldon, she is willing to spend the whole evening taking these 47 takes of Fun with Flags and later even more. She is also so comfortable around him and with his quirks. I love it so much. I can see it also in Vacation solution, how comfortable they are with each other, although it's a bit different paradigm since they are at Amy's lab and working. And it really shows how attached Sheldon is to Amy, he is willing to give a real apology to her and wanted to come back to work with her, altough they had argued last night about Sheldon's tasks in the laboratory. This apology scene is one amongst the most beautiful moments between these two, since it shows a vulnerable side of Sheldon that we so rarely see. And he is willing to show it for Amy only. koops Posted June 12, 2013 Posted June 12, 2013 I love love Beta Test for many reasons. The Dr Who bit is actually very underrated, imo. I love how L/P and S/A are just hanging out watching tv together. I'm a big sucker for the two sets of besties so that scene is so good for me. And it seems like Amy is quite appreciative of Dr Who, unlike ST and SW, whereas Penny complains that it doesn't count as a date. I also don't think she was doing FWF just for Sheldon but she always seems very much into it too, even the second time when she's directing Wil. It's one of those absurd quirky things that they both like to do.
rubyanjel Posted June 12, 2013 Posted June 12, 2013 Well relationships aren't exclusively romantic. I know. there's familial relationship, there's prefessional relationship and there's friendship. But what I meant is the term shipping is used as a term in the fandoms as of the romantic nature. Friendships are called "friendships" and bestieships are called BrOTPs. But yeah, everyone's free to call it whatever. Why did I even tried to say that in the first place.
silverangel Posted June 12, 2013 Posted June 12, 2013 You know when Penny called Amy a vixen in flaming spittoon, do you think she knew that its Sheldon's pet name for Amy or a just off the cuff remark!? I don't kow but I think that she didn't know that Sheldon call Amy..."oh Amy you vixen" .. knowing Sheldon I bet that he probably would not want anyone to know that he says to Amy, because this statement has the tone of endearment, and he is last person who would want to bragged that he says to his "not my girlfriend" vixen, but I might be wrong
rachelshamyfan Posted June 12, 2013 Posted June 12, 2013 (edited) Yeah but then he said it to Leonard as well when he asked him for advice when playing chess so maybe he doesn't mind people knowing!? silverangel Posted June 12, 2013 Posted June 12, 2013 yes you're right, I forgot about that scene when Sheldon and Leonard talking about Amy and Penny " What that vixen done to me Leonard, and how I make it stop"... yes you're right.... well, in that case I think that it is possible, that she knew that Sheldon call her his vixen..it can not be a coincidence...good point I never thought about it... If I recall correctly, I think the X-philes were the first ones to use that term, in refering to the Mulder/Scully Relationship, or MSR. The fandom was somewhat divided among "Shippers", who rooted for the romanticized aspect of their relationship, and the "NoRomos", who objected to or denied any evidence of a romantic relationship. So, it's always been understood to refer to romantic pairings, as far as I've ever heard it used. Just sayin'

This apology scene is one amongst the most beautiful moments between these two, since it shows a vulnerable side of Sheldon that we so rarely see. And he is willing to show it for Amy only. There has usually been a random extra cushion on the other end of the couch. I think it kind of comes and goes and may be used in a scene in order to put the actor or actress in the right position. That couch seems kind of deep--there's one scene where Howard is sitting on the couch, without a cushion behind him, and I guess he's kind of sunken down and back in the couch, but he looks tiny, especially compared to Sheldon sitting next to him. Jim looks like a giant compared to Simon in that scene. I think it's one where he's had some kind of big fight with Bernie and I think Sheldon brings him a hot beverage??? Anyway, I think the cushion is often there. But I do love their ease and comfort with each other, just hanging out. And I absolutely LOVE the Vacation Solution apology scene. That's Sheldon with his "shields down", making a choice in that moment to let go of his pride and arrogance, which is usually all but impossible for him, in order to be able to rejoin his girlfriend. I think it's interesting that in the Spoiler Alert Segmentation, he has a second where he almost apologizes to Leonard--right as Leonard is leaving, when he says, "Leonard, wait!", but then he can't bring himself to apologize, even to his best friend, so he instead says the line about Dobby the elf dying in book seven. Sheldon obviously didn't want Leonard to leave--you can tell by the little bit of surprised and vulnerability in his voice when he asks where he's going and in his reaction to Leonard calling him a "crazy bastard"--but in the end, he couldn't let go of his pride long enough to apologize, whether or not he thinks he did anything wrong. But with Amy, he could have walked out of there and spent the rest of his vacation at home, playing video games or watching scifi DVDs or whatever, if he didn't want to apologize. And when she wouldn't let him get away with the sort of half-assed apologies he might get away with in dealing with the guys, he swallowed his pride, "lowered his shields", and apologized in the most real way. LOVE IT! :D

About that apology... we can see that he thinks about Leonard all the time, that he left, and what he says. I think that when Amy says that she wants to be Sheldon's roommate it was great opportunity for him to persuade his little buddy to move back, and go there to Penny's and says let's forget about it, I will do what you want, my little buddy. Coming to Leonard and asking him to come back he really wanted to Leonard came back, and he really was afraid of the fact that Amy wants to be his roommate, because of the level of intimacy, and he was not ready for it. He just couldn't say: yes please come back, and I'm sorry, he was to proud. He has a lot of feelings for those two, but Amy is the most important. We can see changes in him, that he has a lot of feelings in him, growning, that he cares about people who are dear to him. All this makes him more mature in emotional side of his life. Leonard is special to him, he is his best friend. Amy is the woman who he loves, only for her he can say real apology, without any hesitation, because he knows that she always will challenge him. She will not accept just anything, he knows that she is not satisfied with just any answer, she wants real apology, something that he did not tell anyone, because it is difficult for him to admit his mistakes, he is too proud. He cares so much about Amy and he loves her so much, that he is ready to throw pride out the window and apologize, with her he is a real Sheldon, he can show his vulnerable side, because she does not judge him, and she shows him more feelings than anyone, and she is herself with him. silverangel Posted June 13, 2013 Posted June 13, 2013 (edited) I watched Flaming spittoon and when I think about that scene in Steward's comic books store when Del says that Steward is on a date with Amy, Sheldon says: "nah... I guess I was wrong"... and that sad look in eyes. Leonard asked Sheldon is he okay, and that what he said to Leonard was just an excuse, because he couldn't say that it just hurts him, and that he must do something wrong, that maybe Amy wants something more. He thinks about her all the time, he wants to do something, because he knows that he may loose her, and when Leonard says : "Sheldon, why don’t you just acknowledge that you have feelings for Amy and you don’t want her going out with other men?" he denies it. Leonard knows Sheldon so well, that he knows exactly what's going on( and that proves how strong their friendship is), but Sheldon can not admit a mistake, because then he would have to admit that he isn't so perfect. When he asked Penny to go on a date with him, Penny, that he is too proud to say that he is wrong, that he has feelings for her, even to himself, that he wants to make Amy jealous. This story which Penny says..."There was a guy I liked, and I never told him how I felt. Eventually, he started going out with someone else, and I always regretted it. Do you see where I’m going with this?" She said go and talk to her, and that story was reference to him like "hey if you will not do something you will loose her, and you will be regret it, because you know you love her. " He says "I know, I'm the guy", it's like first thought in his mind was yes I have feelings for her, and if I won't do something I will loose her", but then he says loud: "Are you sure? That would explain so much. Your constant presence in my apartment, that baffling dalliance with Leonard just to be near me, the way you call me sweetie all the time." It was like he couldn't say what he thought, because again, he was to proud, but we can see a struggle within him, logic v heart, and heart wins, he asked her to be his girlfriend... I know that we talked about it thousands of times, but I just love that ep. so much. Edited June 13, 2013 by silverangel
Misophonia Posted June 13, 2013 Posted June 13, 2013 There is such a complex beauty that is Sheldon. He can be so utterly sweet in one scene and so bitterly mean in the next. Sometimes, I honestly don't know how to take him. But, I do know this. Just when he has angered me to the point of no return when I am like "what a jerk," he will pull something out that just makes my heart melt. Believe me, I know why Amy is patient with him. When he's bad, he's bad, But, when he's good, he's sooooooo good. Sigh. This has nothing to do with anything really. Apparently, I am just in an over-sharing mood. Pemberley Posted June 13, 2013 Posted June 13, 2013 I think, to liven things up on this thread, we should have a contest of some kind. You know, like a fanfic contest or something? That would be cool. Everyone could vote for a few weeks and knock off one author and so on until we unleash the leading Shamy Queen (or King) of fanfiction. Who is with me? koops Posted June 13, 2013 Posted June 13, 2013 I think Sheldon and Amy are more similar than they are different. Sheldon isn't mean, he is just brutally honest, just like Amy is. It's just that it's a fine line between honesty and cruelty, and I think the writers have crossed it a bit too often recently, for the sake of laughs. Because there's this idea that he can get away with anything. But usually even when he says something that appears mean on the surface, if you actually stop to think about it you realize it isn't really all that mean. It's just that most people would lie or omit information in those same situations, but he has no filter. Same with Amy.

It's just that most people would lie or omit information in those same situations, but he has no filter. Same with Amy. And in many ways, his reactions or statements are just kind of childish in their meanness or seeming cruelty. Like all of his talk about sonic deathrays, or killing stupid people. I don't think he would really kill anyone (certainly not by his own hands), but he has in his head an idealized version of reality that is kind of based on comic books and scifi and a childish view of the world where he always gets his way and no one stands in his way. But in the end, he loves the people in his small circle and he can generally function in society when he wants to, he can be generous when he wants to, but like many children, he also likes to win all the time, get his way all the time, and be "first" or best at everything he does. He knows he's smarter than everyone around him and his ego often has to be checked by those around him, whether it's Leonard and the gang or his mother or someone like Kripke. He often chooses to disregard or dismiss the criticism of others, but in certain circumstances he will heed advice. In a way, we all have an inner Sheldon, but most of us have learned our manners and, like you say, we filter our responses where Sheldon does not. koops Posted June 13, 2013 Posted June 13, 2013 (edited) I don't even think it's even a matter of manners, to be honest, as much as society teaching you to lie to please people. I always find it funny that people would rather be lied to (or not being told something) than to hear the truth so they can feel happy. In a way, it's like Mayim said about their relationship, there's a level of comfort and security in knowing that the other person is always 100% honest with you and you know where they are coming from at all times. There's so much deception and omission in romantic relationships in particular, especially in the early stages. The great thing about Shamy is that they never tried to impress the other, they are just always themselves and accept each other as such.
