Their relationship seems to be based on sex and I am NOT an idiot   I'm sure you will find many others who agree.  Leonard is insecure about his relationship and when Penny categorizes Leonard she tends to judge him on his sex 'he really tries'.  She barely can say ILY on purpose.  She slipped that out but had that been in front of others she'd be pressured to say so and we've seen proof of that with Raj, Leonard and Penny.  The Lenny just doesn't work as well as it did in s1-s3.

Penny's solution to everything is sex. And Leonard has admitted that he has pretended to like something to get sex with Penny. It is a very physical relationship. It seems to be how they solve their problems. I don't think sex is all they have but it's not that difficult to see why people would make that assumption.

Penny did not allow Leonard to have sex with her (or anyone else) for four months. The writers wanted to put this argument away for good by doing this:

 

Penny: That was a really nice dinner. I’m glad you asked me out again.

Penny: You see me all the time. You sure you just don’t miss the sex?

Leonard: Well, yeah, sex with you is pretty great. Have you ever tried it?

Penny: I have. You are not wrong. I just think if we’re gonna try dating again, we should take things slow.

 

Leonard passed the test so well that Penny started bragging that he would never leave her. When she did allow sex to resume he proposed and that started another sex drought for Leonard that ended on the second episode of this season.

 

If Leonard just wants sex he has been given other options in the past and in the present (Alex). What Leonard has wanted from the Pilot show to now is to be married, with children, to Penny.

The first time they dated in Season 3 there wasn't a lot of substance to the relationship. A lot of fans complaining that they just didn't make sense together. Prady has said Penny wasn't ready or something like that. This time round they have taken a different approach and the relationship seems stronger. Still, I'm not sure I would stick around if a girl had that much reluctance telling me she loved me. Leonard has been very patient.

Umm what??? You think their relationship was better in S3???  That seems highly illogical.  Do you remember how immature Penny was? Everything was about her, she was always right, it was her way or leave... think about the guitarist episode and you'll see my point.  They have both matured greatly over the past few seasons and i think they are at a much better place emotinally than they've ever been.  Think about the holographic excitation, the 43 peculiarity, or the next two episodes that are coming up.  Sure they have bumps, and they enjoy having sex but why is that a bad thing?  A healthy relationship includes both emotional stability and a physical relationship.

 

Not only that but you say Leonard is insecure but I think that is changing as the season goes on.  A big part of his insecurities came from a lack of closure within his relationship with Penny.  But after hearing heer express her love for him th9ings are starting to look up.  They are emotionally stable and i think in a good place.

Season 3 Penny was a 23 year old woman who seemed to think with her hormones. Her motto was "don't over think things", which she has told Leonard several times. She was immature and impetuous and enjoyed the fact that she had this successful man who was safe and controllable. She panicked when he asked her to think about the future.

 

Season 6 (and a half) Penny is a 27 year old woman who the writers have made think a lot about the future. As Prady and Malero said in May of this year, Penny had to grow up "chronologically". She is thinking like a woman in her late 20s would do:

 

Where am I in my career goals?

What friends do I associate with that will help me?

What do I have to do to make myself better?

...and who will be a true life partner?

 

Penny has been going through this introspection this season and is slowly answering the questions.

 

In the real world, I doubt that Leonard would be around this long. Even Penny does not feel that she is worth it from comments she has made in the past. But they have made Leonard wait for her to see the light and his reward is now almost here.

Yeah, I'm not sure what the problem there is either.  Back in the dark ages (I am a bit older than many of you), right after my then girlfriend and I got back together, we were in a relationship, cared about each other rather deeply, were in our early mid 20s, and, yeah, we had a lot of sex.  That lasted for quite a few years for us, so even considering Leonard is supposed to be in his early thirties, lots of sex can be the norm.  Even up to the point where it appears to be the only basis for the relationship.

I meant the chemistry between Johnny and Kaley was much stronger when they actually were together and when it was public that they actually DID date it changed their whole chemistry balance. I cant explain it.  But I just dont see the same bond and their relationship on the show doesnt look as real, it looks forced and odd.

It think their relationship is sort of classic in that Leonard has always been in the love at first sight relationship and Penny is the classic falling in love with you best friend after being around each other for years. The just mixed the two so that is why their timing was off. I am beginning to believe the writers are putting them in sync now in season 6 because they seem to be getting more and more on the same page in each L/P episode scene. The sex seems just as a way to make things funny, not a way to define their relationship.

I think the sex will become more incidental and less a driver of the comedy. Totally plausible. However I do want the show to imply that that they are having a good time in the sack because it is as good measure of the health of the relationship. And also for the verisimilitude of the show, of course. Nothing creepy to see here. Just healthy vicariousness.

It's not like a tween show on Disney or Nickelodeon where all the characters in relationships are going to be virgins till marriage. So when it comes to a show like The Big Bang Theory...For one of the criticisms being the main couple is all about sex just blows my mind.

 

The characters obviously are not the waiting till marriage type. The only Virgin character to our knowledge is Sheldon right? I don't know about Amy. But it's safe to say all the other characters are not virigins. And that included Howard and Bernedette before they were married. So people acting like a couple that has sex is a bad thing are watching the wrong show. These characters have sex! Deal with it. haha.
