He did generally not go so high up in his inflections in the earliest episodes, but he's often used that upper end of his voice. And it's more natural for Jim, I think. When he's on talk shows he often will use that high inflection in certain situations. Probably not as often as he does for Sheldon, though, I guess. But I'm pretty sure he started going higher long before the 5th season. I'm watching a 4th season ep right now and he pops up there in certain moments. He's shown up this season, especially with alex. Even though it's different, I like it, and I think it's part of what having a girlfriend is doing for him. I don't wish to start anything nasty, but his treatment of Alex was straight out of the Madmen days IMO and we have had a few changes in the status of women since the 60s. I love him so much (no homo) he is my favorite chararcter on the show and you know i think he is just trying to fit in the present society he tries hard very hard to be kind to those around him....and that is all that matters..... But "slaves to your hormones" doesn't imply any deference to intellect or respect for difference. And Einstein was one instance of a man. Sheldon has dissed 51% or so of the population on the basis of an intrinsic characteristic. Women may choose to shop, but people can't easily self regulate their hormone levels. I think it's not a good look for the show on principle. You can argue distinctions, but for me it's disappointing because its so pervasive and Sheldon could amplify existing attitudes. I just hope they are going through a phase. Just sayin'. PS and it never came up on BSG, and Im guessin' Trek either.
