Boys whose fathers don't appear to be good role models, often look around for better ones, even TV characters. It's obvious Sheldon was drawn to a half Human,half Vulcan role model. It no doubt helped him become the character we love. Are boys looking at this show for role models? The only person Sheldon fears,intellectually, is Leslie Winkle, although they are actually quite similar, except she's knowingly wittier!

Somebody mentioned somewhere the other day about Sheldon liking monkeys and I happened to catch the episode where he tells the little girl that and also in the same episode he mentioned about attaching electrodes to brains!

Thanks, interesting comments. It's amazing where a programme like this, can take us, in terms of learning, in this case about psychology. All I need now is an actor, and a writer from the show to answer some of my other questions.

I am not sure if I like when Sheldon comes very much with his childish moments like in some points in the last episode (6x22) or when he was in Howard&B  closet and he was requesting for being there little bit more....I feel this become a little exaggerated in some point, less convincing....I don´t know. Actually I liked this a lot in the past, in previous seasons, like when Penny took him to Disneyword (or Disneyland?) and some other situations. I KNOW to be childish is part of his personality and I love it but, in few lasts scenes/episodes, I don´t know, I felt this a little artificial! Sorry, it is difficult to explain myself, what I mean.... Can someone understand me? Does someone agree? or this is only my imagination...?

Of course we understand you! I think KOOPS makes a valid point; Sheldon was precocious, and unable to live out his childhood in a normal way. So part of him is still doing that. Maybe he'll become fully adult, over next episodes! I know it's been said before on here, but that mix of naivete and super intelligence, make him appealing. And loveable! Penny loves the child in him. Wasn't that the sweetest scene, where she got him leonard Nimoys's dedication, signature, (and D.N.A.).

I've been trying to figure out this 'A-sexual' deal. I was reading people talking about Michael Jackson, elsewhere on here. And realised he and Sheldon have similar traits. You only have to look at early footage of MJ, to realise what a precocious talent he had. Again not allowed a normal childhood. Therefore a part of him stays childlike, maybe never to enter adult sexuality. Also maybe explains why MJ's perception of how he should look, didn't match reality, so he changed!

A cursory search on line would suggest he is a composite; of Chuck Lorre(claims, to have been obsessive, and took his time growing up and continued experimenting), and a computer programmer known by Bill Prady. Jim Parsons says he read John Elder Rolison's 'Look Me In The Eye', as research. Obviously Jim Parsons interprets these aspects in his own brilliant way. And the more I watch his tics,expressions(scary smiles!), and movements, the more impressed I am at his talent. Still child- like and A-sexual, though!

I've mentioned this before, but I've never considered Sheldon to be asexual, but ascetic, someone who has chosen to set sexuality aside in order to concentrate on science.

His choice was probably made easier because of that arrested development aspect of his youth and his love for science and his childhood emulation of Mr Spock, etc.

I love child-like and childish Sheldon because I think they use it to great advantage in the show, both to highlight the relationships between all the characters and to underscore that underdeveloped side of his personality. And it's just funny. (And Jim owns it!)

Sheldon seems to move easily between his adult self and his child self with little self-consciousness, partly, I think because he has a fairly safe environment among his friends. I love that one line in the Wil Wheaton ep with the bowling when he comes to Penny after they had to forfeit the first game and he says, "I'm not ashamed to admit I cried myself to sleep last night."

But I don't think his access to his child self interferes with his relationship to Amy. As others have pointed out, he usually acts more grown up with her--or at least more adolescent than childlike.

I just don't know. It is strange, because I'm learning about myself through watching Sheldon. That's why I'm obsessed by him. I get the feeling reading these threads, that alot of the people consider themselves to be 'outsiders', and I'm glad I've found this site. It seems like a haven! Most people don't understand O.C.D. I've always considered myself to be an aesthetic ascetic, so I take your point. But I also at times feel A-sexual. When people ask me, what do you believe; this or that? I often believe both. So I'm going to say Sheldon is both ascetic, and A-sexual. Maybe it's something to do with being caught between the male and female worlds. Boys are supposed to move from their mother's influence, to their father's. If the father is an inadequate role model, even Mr Spock might not be able to help! (off now to research Einstein's brain, after another thread, got me thinking!)

Does he ever mention his father? I read that Sheldon is supposed to have a 'superiority complex'. How can someone who is clearly superior, have a complex?
