Leonard Hofstadter

Recommended Posts

One thing I loved about Johnny's portrayal of Leonard was in the early days when he's be going into some nerdy over-explanation he would get this weird kind of breathiness to his voice.  I can't quite describe it.

But two prime examples are in the one where he and Sheldon argue about presenting their joint paper.

When he and Penny are looking through his closet and she asks him about his tie and he explains how it's reversible, he has that weird nervous voice.  And then it's there again when he's outside the conference room practicing his spherical chicken joke on Penny and the guys.

Love it!  And I also love the wonderfully nerdy picture of him on that poster. :D

I really like how Leonard has developed though the series and his friendship with Sheldon.

My only bug bear is that he doesn't seem so "positive" in the sixth series, I don't know of this is on purpose or what though?

Besides Sheldon my favourite male character is Leonard. There is just something about him. The way he puts up with Sheldon (and loves him despite his "quirky" behavior) and the manner with which all the other characters revolve around him make him one of the best characters on the show for me.

... (Not to mention Johnny is quite HOT!)

Favourite character in the show by a country mile.

For me, the Leonard character IS the show. He is the most believable and the one I see traits of myself and others in. With the possible exception of an early Penny the other characters are a bit too extreme - but that's the comedy.

My favorite character, Lenard really is the center for the group.

He also is the most believable, yes he is a nerd, but he out of the four guys has the easiest time relating to society as a whole.

Does Lenard have issues, you bet (who wouldn’t with his mother), but he is the easiest out of all the characters for me to relate too.

Even Penny who started out as the “normal” has morphed starting in season four into something extreme.

I find he's highly relatable and I envy that mop of hair, gel or no gel. I'm interested in how they will keep the balance between confidence and cluelessness in his personal relationship with his love. My partner found his early puppyness (?) a bit of a hook, more so than Sheldon or the other boys. I enjoyed the quixoticism of his attempts at romantic attachment. And that he is crazy smart and still a slave to his biology.

Leonard is the 'nucleus of the group', as Sheldon had to admit. Although Sheldon is my favourite character, the scenes between Leonard and him are very good.

Leonard is the character I relate to most, though Amy is close (and they're similar in some ways). I also absolutely love his scenes with Sheldon, and the odd bond they share. The show would be just as lost without Leonard as without Sheldon, I feel.

Leonard is by far my favorite character (despite my Sheldon avatar) and I think Johnny is under rated in his performance.  While Jim does a great job with Sheldon's quirky facial tics, all in all Sheldon looks and sounds like Jim Parsons.  On the other hand, when I see Johnny Galecki on a talk show I can't "see" or "hear" Leonard in him at all.  I don't know if it is the way he holds his head and body, squints, or speaks when playing Leonard that is such a great disguise, but even when he's dressed in Leonard's clothes you can tell whether or not he's in character.

I see so much of myself in Leonard is scary at times, I share all his quirks, hang-ups, his realism.

He's the best character on this show imo in terms of a REAL PERSON. That's why I despise Penny so much of the time.

He needs to be loved, unconditionally and openly.

Bless him.

Leonard is also my favorite he is easy to understand. His motivations are straight forward. I think some story lines made him a little selfish, but that is sitcom.  Leonard is the guy you want to root for, but because the series is already in its 6th season and may go for 10 there will be set backs again. I do get frustrated that his character seems to get bullied at times by Sheldon or Penny, but that is the chemistry of the show.

Unlike others I was more like Howard when I was in college in Engineering until I met my wife LOL.

Leonard is my favorite character. It used to be a toss-up between him and Sheldon but I don't like the changes they've made to Sheldon. Leonard is the anchor of the show. His mannerisms remind me of Jack Benny.

I was watching the one with the garbage chair last night and I loved the way Leonard got all squirmy when Sheldon came and asked him to check his scalp for chair lice and he said he'd already done it the night before and Howard says, "Just his head, right?" and Leonard kind of shudders and says, "I don't want to talk about it."  :D

Makes you wonder exactly what he's done for Sheldon over the years... :p

Leonard is a good guy. Love his humor. Definetly one of my favourite characters. (after Sheldon)

Yeah...Leonard's a stud, he has become somehow a chick magnet. :p

We haven't met Leonard's father on the show, and I'm wondering who would/should play him.  My husband suggested that Jerry Stiller would look the part, but we agree John Laroquette would be amazing in that role.  Kelsey Grammer would be a natural fit.  What do you guys think?

I think John de Lancie would be great as his father.  Star Trek tie-in bonus!

No real tie-ins, but I think John Larroquette would be a great choice.

You've got me wondering just who would work as the guy who married that nutjob Beverly, then was so trapped that be borrowed his son's hugging machine(!), then decided to dump Beverly for a waitress. Leonard is in his thirties now, and his siblings are all older, so we're talking about being married to Bev for almost forty years. We'd also have to cast the new wife. Given the show's popularity, they could get pretty much anybody for an episode. Actually, given Lorre's small casting field, Jon Cryer and Courtney Thorne-Smith would work. Cryer could do the downbeaten guy thing easily, convincing as someone that would have suffered under Beverly, and Thorne-Smith could do the waitress thing easily. Plus she could mirror Penny pretty well. Even at her age, she still has the cute, gorgeous cheerleader look going.

I have always been struck by how odd Leonard and Sheldon's relationship has been. Sheldon is clearly Leonard's friend, and Leonard is often cited as being Sheldon's best friend, yet it isn't a buddy comedy. Sheldon has little or no respect for anyone's intelligence but his own, and often fills the ambiguous role as trickster at times. Sometimes he's doing his best to help Leonard, as when he asked Penny not to hurt his friend (one of the most excellent moments in the whole show, in my opinion). Other times he will throw him under the bus without a thought, as in "The Spoiler Alert". He is also jealous of the fact that the group is centered on Leonard. I think Leonard believes that Sheldon is his friend, and when it looks like he's screwing him over, it is because Sheldon isn't aware that he's doing it. The only real problem in their friendship is the Roommate Agreement. The latest version was signed under duress, as well. I'm sure if Penny started sleeping over Sheldon would insist on adding the Penny-specific addenda to the Agreement, and that will lose him a roommate.
