This episode only showed Raj moving forward in his relationship. you saw him over at Emily's apartment. Shamy's storyline was two steps back, two steps forward. Essentially nothing happened. in reality the same goes for Lenny. While it was something fun to see it wasn't OOC. Myself and fellow Lenny fans loved it but it was way overdo. Sheldon is the one stalling the coitus issue. he is also the one stalling Lenny moving in together full time. I just think something like Raj and emily moving in together would force Shamy's relationship and to a lesser extent Lenny's relationship forward.

What does any of the other couples have to do with Shamy's pace of progress?

You really think Amy will start putting pressure on Sheldon (again), simply because Raj and Emily move in together, or any other progress one of the couples will make?

I just think there will eventually be a breaking point with Amy.

Although the actress is attractive, Amy Farafowler the character is frump woman. She looks like the weird girl at the back of the classroom in junior high who'd pick her nose or pop her zits; the girl the rest of the girls tried to avoid.

If she wants to spark Sheldon's comatose sex drive, girlfriend's gonna need to put on makeup, cut/perm her hair and go clothes shopping with her pals. :-)

Wow....how shallow are you?

It's been shown that Sheldon is attracted to mind power first, so I would hazard a guess that her brain is what gets the other drive doing.  Yes, his hormones would probably go into overdrive a bit if she dressed up and showed her stuff off, but it would be nothing more than a cherry on his Amy sundae.  Normal men and women if they see their mate dressed in a fashion that shows their body off will probably have their hormones go through the roof.  It's pretty typical, but the majority love their mates and find them attractive no matter what they are in.  Yes, Shamy are not typical, but in this instance I have no doubt that this is true for both of them.

If she has to dress up for Sheldon to get a hard on for her, well then Amy deserves better.  Thankfully, he loves her for who she is and one can see he is attracted to her AS she is.

I had a brother reading this behind my shoulder and his reaction was very fitting. "If you'll tell this to a girl, you can be sure to never, ever have a sex again...or see a daylight."

But on the serious line I would honestly never, wanted to see this. I like Amy the way she is, not every woman has to be "prom queen" type of girl. She has a troubles with social situation, have sometimes wicked sense of humor, and a lot of quirks, but it's what make her character her. And there is a lot of people who like her for who she is. And for her physical appearance, even here on the forum are some male folks who find Amy attractive, as was said countless of times, there is lock for every key and beauty is always in the eyes of beholder. Amy's appearance is again part of her character and for me, she has her own innocent, subte kind of beauty. Franky if Sheldon - the most unique character was suddenly all over Amy for wearing short skirt, put tons of makeup on or whatever, it would be only disappointing for me. Amy is comfortable with her appearance, and Sheldon either never even hinted she should change, so why should she?

I'm not talking "skimpy" or "prom queen" clothes for Amy at all. I'm suggesting casual, age appropriate clothing, not stuff that looks like it came out of her elderly aunt's closet.

And sorry, but when a guy's attracted only to your mind and/or personality ... and NOTHING else ... then you're generally gonna end up being best pals, best friends, call it what you will...but not madly in love.

Sorry to say.

Wow....how shallow are you?.

Not shallow at all ... just realistic.

Sex is not intellectual. It's a primal animal urge. And we're talking about a guy who could still play Klingon boggle while the rest of the guys were fixated on models.

So ... it's gonna take a metaphorical two-by-four smacking Sheldon in the groin to turn on his raw, primitive instincts. Having a girlfriend hiding every line and curve behind a long twill skirt and her grandma's cardigan ain't gonna do it!

What I think would be a cute episode is if Penny and Bernadette did take Amy to the beauty parlor, and the result shocked Sheldon out of his sexual coma. THAT could be a hoot!

This is Sheldon we are talking about and he is like the premise of the turtle, as slow as one when it comes to feelings and dealing with them, especially romantic ones, he had a panic attack when Amy was dressed up for prom because he didn't know what to do with those feelings

Apart from the awful mustard cardigan and her las vegas outfit, i like what Amy wears, she likes it as well

Yes, and he's still a man. If he's truly asexual ( and some people are), nothing is going to arouse him. But if he's not asexual, then something'd gotta get the wheels turning, and it won't be long, intellectual discussions (which he could easily have with his guy friends).

Biology is what it is...even for Sheldon Cooper.

Some "thing" already has his wheels turning, and that "thing" is Amy.

Not the Amy you think she should be, but the Amy she is right now, because that's the only Amy that exists.

If she would let herself get talked into the outfits you described, she wouldn't be herself anymore.

But you probably will come up with a response that make sense in your universe ;)

But the problem is, you're judging Amy's appearance through your own preferences and view of how woman should look like. But that doesn't have to be the same  for everyone. Every one person is attracted to different things, and what If someone's preference would be eldery aunt's closet? Would be still miles away from the weirdest one, believe me... hundred people, hundred different tastes, would be boring if we were all the same. Plus she's made up character, and her appearance is part of her character and sometimes exaggerated on purpose , as much as Howard's turtlenecks or belts, or Sheldon's two layers childish superhero shirts. It's just another thing that makes their character easily recognizable and unique.

Based on your theory Sheldon is attracted to Amy for more than her mind and personality, because their relationship moved from best friends three years ago, now they are in relationship, holding hands, hugging, kissing, talking about themselves openly as couple and people in love.

My view is, that Sheldon is such a psychologically interesting and complex character, than him discovering his libido though Amy's new wardrobe would be like the most superficial, unpremeditated plot, and I would expect better of writers, but you have of course every right to have your own idea. I will just hope writers will take another direction ...

[snip].

Totally shifting gears ... are Bernadette and Penny ever going to get around to giving Amy a real makeover? THAT could be a truly delightful episode.

You shifted gears completely off topic!

I was not going to participate but since there is already pages of back and forth on this I guess it could not hurt to respond.

One of the delights of Sheldon and Amy is they are drawn to each other because of something other than stereotypical external beauty. A makeover would make no difference to Sheldon or it perhaps might even make him uncomfortable. The prom episode is as made-over as Amy is likely to ever get.

The makeover nonsense has been overdone too many times in Hollywood. As for Sheldon, he just needs to overcome some phobias. The moment they talked about having Martian children we warmed up to the possibility of children. The Martian concept must have diverted him from whatever he is afraid of.

Keep in mind that as Raj's wing man he had no interest at all in the girls (The Psychic Vortex s3e12). It has nothing to do with with looks.

It just baffles me how we constantly hear about Amy having to get a makeover to look more attractive because Mayim is better looking IRL (although, I mean, honestly, some of Mayim's own fashion choices in her every day life are even worse than Amy's!), but you never hear anyone say about how much more attractive the guys are in RL: Kunal, Jim, Johnny, Simon. All of them. The whole point of dressing the characters up in a certain way is because they're just that: characters with their own personality. But oh no. The nerdy girl needs to dress better, but the guys can do whatever they like. Happy International Women's Day indeed.

eta: Oh, sorry. I forgot Penny's haircut. It's not just the nerdy girl. My bad.

Biology is what it is... but what it is not, is perfectly uniform. Specifically, the libido is not perfectly uniform. Even more specifically, the libido of heterosexual males is not perfectly uniform. Not all straight men like the same thing, and the tastes of any one straight man can change over time. No evolutionary psychologist has ever insisted that there is one guaranteed master-key to male desire; no 'One Ring to Spring Them All'.

Thank goodness the writers are not even close as shallow as you. Also, you made me very angry with your comments about Amy and that she needs to put on some makeup to get him to bed.

Why on earth would a comment about a fictional character make you "very angry"? That's a little extreme, don't you think?

And there was no need for the personal insult, thank you.

And here we go.... Lionne I actually find what penny wore in last week episode to be very cute but that just my opinion on it.... make up wouldn't hurt for Amy she beautiful in her own quirky way but I would like to see her come out of her shell a bit more and try something risky and fun.

So happy someone here "gets it".

Amy's frumpy wardrobe is her turtle shell. It protects her from rejection. She's been hurt a lot by life. Her clothing screams "I'm insure! Don't look at me!"

I think it's nearly time for her to shelve that shell and let the world see how beautiful she really is. After all, Leonard learned he could wear something other than a hoodie, and Howard eventually toned down his goofy disco pants, so why shouldn't there be hope for Amy's fashions to evolve too?

The Magic Makeover trope. *sigh*

As ATOB pointed out, Sheldon has never been affected by appearance or the typical "triggers" that are supposed to flip a guy's switch and the writers have often made a point of underscoring that issue. When the girls got the princess makeovers at Disneyland, Leonard and Howard reacted immediately (though I'm not sure most guys would have a princess fetish...). Sheldon, however, was pointedly not affected, even though Amy looked just as attractive in her makeover as Penny and Bernie. And when Bernie told Amy about the sexy Catholic schoolgirl costume, she tried to use that to turn Sheldon on, but he was more interested in whether or not she had a certain DVD as a way to make it up to him. He didn't even understand what the schoolgirl costume was supposed to represent.

The way to Sheldon's heart is through his brain. Amy's quirkiness a d lack of sexual motivation on their first meeting is part if what attracted him to her as a friend, IMO, and then his affection for her grew as they found more common intellectual ground (like in Herb Garden). Without realizing it, he got to the point where his in er caveman demanded he stake a claim to her, first by telling Leonard "she's not for you!", then by asking her to be his girlfriend.

But none of that grew from seeing her in some "sexy" outfit, or with more makeup, etc. What I think is fantastic is that these two unconventional people have found one who loves them for who they are. I think that's essentially true for all the couples.

His desire to kiss her grew from him actually experiencing it (as more than a quick ambush peck from Amy) and that did not come about because he was suddenly turned on by her appearance, but because he was arguing with her and bent to kiss her in order to mock the idea of romance. As Jim said, once their lips met Sheldon found that it was not bad, and then he took that step forward and began to enjoy it, so much so that kissing goodnight was quickly added to their relationship agreement.

The main reason Sheldon and Amy are not going to have sex for all the reasons that "most people" in real life would do it (age, libido, "being turned on") is that these two characters are not really like anyone in real life. You can't apply the reasons or motivations of others--even the other characters on the show--to these two. Though Amy says she would happily have sex with Sheldon, she's not after sex for it's own sake, otherwise she could have sought it out anywhere, like with Stuart. She didn't have to say yes to Sheldon that night if all she was looking for was a hookup. Her motivation for being with Sheldon is about love.

And Sheldon is just now figuring it all out. His age or typical male turn-ons are not a factor. How he reads people and interprets motivations are different from most people. He's just beginning to understand his own heart when it comes to Amy.

And there's no law that says that people have to jump in the sack just because they're in love. That may be the post-modernist, post-sexual-revolutionary way to think about it, but it's not the only way to think about it.

It wasn't even that serious to begin with people are way too caught up in their feelings about this make-over....... BigBangWeary yes I agree with you I hate those hands me downs clothes that looked like it came out of her grandma closet I want to see her come out of her shell more and try something on that doesn't make her frumpy and dowdy.

Ooo, ooo, let's not stop there.

I mean have you seen how hot Johnny Galecki is in real life?

Let's get rid of Leonard's nasal tone and short-sighted squint and sex him up.  Ooooo it'd be like the end of Grease but with the sexes reversed. Penny could sing You're The One That I Want and then the gang could all take off in a flying car, ooo shooby dooby doo, do woop, do woop, do woop!

If she shortened up her hair a little (or pulled it back more ... that's a good look for her), and traded in those sad little cardigans for some blazers, I bet she'd look terrific. She needs to streamline that lumpy oatmeal look she's got goin' on.

And Big Bang Theory.....hmmm, bit boring eh?  Got to be a better name for this programme now we've sexed it up.  Hey, I know, they're all friends right?  How 'bout "Friends" as the new name.

Frieeeends. Frieeends. Friends. Yeah, that's catchy!

Amy doesn't need to change and tptb are not going to change her just to suit a tiny minority

Sometimes Mystery rose, sometimes? That's not good enough. Leonard's a hot hot hottie, he's gotta stop hiding that sexiness behind those frumpy clothes and shake that thang. 24/7, not just sometimes! How else is Penny gonna realise he's The One That She Wants, ooh ooh ooh honey!
