Chaliceinnana Posted February 18, 2013 Posted February 18, 2013 I actually think she was conceived via artificial insemination, or that her other told her that to cover up some crazy sexual adventure. Which would explain a lot about her mom's virginity priortization. Howard already has parental abandonment covered... Even if her mom was a widow, Amy would have mentioned her father... Just guessing, of course.
koops Posted February 18, 2013 Posted February 18, 2013 Interesting. That could be a pretty big reveal. I was thinking more along the lines of her mother getting pregnant and her father not wanting to have any part in it, unlike Howard who was abandoned when he was older. So she would have never met her dad. But that's an interesting take too.

I think it would be interesting for Amy to state the sperm donor lie, then reveal she is just playing along because she doesn't want to know the truth. Once again, just totally making things up in my brain.
Kiru Breezy Posted February 18, 2013 Posted February 18, 2013 Or she just grew up without a father. Father abandoned them young or her mother wasn't interested in making her father a part of her life.
koops Posted February 18, 2013 Posted February 18, 2013 When did we first find out about Howard's father? Since we were just talking in the other thread about Mayim having scenes with Simon, that might be a good bonding plot.
The God Particle Posted February 20, 2013 Posted February 20, 2013 Always imagined that Amy's father is dead, her mum remarried and her stepfather did not not how to treat her so basically was kind but distant. Her step-sister reminds her of Penny is a way and was not raised around her. That way if they want to later introduce her they could but if not no big deal. The same with her step father. Her mum we have seen once and they could bring her back in they wish but there seems to be no reason to do so at this point. Basically:Amy is without Family unless they need her to be for the Plot. DigginTheShamy Posted February 26, 2013 Posted February 26, 2013 I think Amy's distance from her family in the show is a really interesting contrast to Sheldon. He's so reliant on his mother and often talks about his twin, yet Amy is so independent. It shows Sheldon's child-like attitude and how he's really still just a kid because he's never HAD to grow up. Amy, on the other hand, is not SOCIALIZED but she's extremely independent. I kinda like it! Especially now that Sheldon is starting to rely on Amy more and more... SHAMY <3 Yes, it is indeed very interesting. She's very strong as a person, considering how lonely she seems to have been prior to meeting Sheldon. She definitely had all sorts of defense mechanisms in place for a while still when we first met her, coupled with her lack of social skills because she never had a chance to develop any. I think reminding him of what she has put up with in life would be a great way to get Sheldon to appreciate how lucky he's been in his life, having a caring mother and grandma and meeting Leonard which allowed him to have a group of friends that put up with him. She's just so strong and cheerful all the time that it's easy to forget she must have been pretty lonely before we met her. And I think it's easy for many to forget she is far from a "normal" girl given all of that. Edited February 26, 2013 by koops
ShamyFTW Posted March 1, 2013 Posted March 1, 2013 I actually think she was conceived via artificial insemination, or that her other told her that to cover up some crazy sexual adventure. Which would explain a lot about her mom's virginity priortization. Howard already has parental abandonment covered... Even if her mom was a widow, Amy would have mentioned her father... Just guessing, of course. Yeah I don't like the idea of Amy's father abandonment. The show has that with Howard. Why cant Amy be just an only child growing up with both her parents. Amy is smart...and socially awkward, didn't have friends. She did try, but didn't end well. Being in "girlie girl world" is tough. So maybe...to protect Amy, her mother started building her self-esteem up in an area that she would shine/feel proud of. Her intelligence. Amy could have decided to be totally opposite of what normally goes on in "girl world", shaving, trendy clothes, makeup, dating. She committed to it and Mom reinforced. However, her Mom also wanted her to have the "traditional" life, school, job, marriage, which could have prompt her to make the dating once a year rule. Amy is stunted socially because although she wanted the friends, social life, she was rejected, causing her to build the wall or aloof personality that was displayed when her character was first introduced. Remember how she zeroed in when Bernadette mentioned that she and Penny were having girls night, she immediately wanted to be a part of it. Anyway I think I went off on a tangent, my point is that the guys have issues with their parents(maybe not Raj so much), the girls don't need to have family issue. Though Amy and Sheldon are very similar, they have some notable differences. She does not, for example, share his love of Star Trek, considering it "cheap science fiction", and also does not share Sheldon's other love of comic books. Also, she does not believe in wearing costumes for unspecified reasons, though she does change this resistance over time. Amy is more willing to socialize with others than Sheldon. While Sheldon generally refuses to accept the need for intimacy, Amy appears to desire the kind of friendships she was denied as a child. Spaced_up Posted March 5, 2013 Posted March 5, 2013 They could have got him someone better in the role of Amy, just don't like their choice of actress. She would be better doing her own show like she did with Blossom. She's too abasive for big bang and her and Sheldon look wrong together. I prefer her in small does and wish they would split them up. Yuck.

Yuck. Too abrasive? As opposed to Bernadette who yells? Mayim has done a great job with the AFF character and has brought a lot of new viewers to the show. Also this thread is about Amy Farrah Fowler, not the actress in the role. Edited March 5, 2013 by ShamyFTW

Pomita Posted March 5, 2013 Posted March 5, 2013 Aww I love that duck. I agree that Amy's apparent independence from her family is an interesting contrast with Sheldon's close, immature relationship with his mother. We've heard mentions of how Amy's mother signed her yearbook, or made a deal with her to date, and we've seen her once, but in the absence of any further interaction or on-screen appearances, this comes across as a rather distant, detached relationship. I'm curious to know more about her father and siblings, if any. Her other relatives don't sound like pleasant folks (at least not pleasant to her), from what we heard about them in Weekend Vortex. Her relatives sound a lot like Sheldon's extended family to be honest, they don't sound like the brightest folk. I can see Amy sticking out like a sore thumb in her family. I think her mom might have been very protective/worrying given the mentions we've had: the yearbook, the insistence she dates, the fact that she paid her cousin to go to the prom with her. It sounds like she was aware that Amy was having trouble with social interactions and tried to make things better for her (and failed). But it doesn't sound like a close relationship now that she's a grown-up, that is true. Spaced_up Posted March 7, 2013 Posted March 7, 2013 How can anyone else be too abrasive for TBBT with Sheldon in the show? Sheldon's not creepy. He made the show what it is and then they give him HER as a girlfriend. I lurk on this forum all the time but rarely post because anyone would think the entire world thinks shamy is the best thing ever, if you go by whats here. I have a few friends who like her but I have never met anyone who actually likes them as a couple. I don't get it.
koops Posted March 7, 2013 Posted March 7, 2013 A forum is hardly an accurate representation of the audience. I'm sure there's people who hate her and love her just as there are people who hate and love other characters/couples. It's personal preference. I wasn't into the show as much before she was introduced and it's because of her that I started re-watching it all in order. I became a Shamy fan as a consequence of Amy, rather than an Amy fan as a consequence of Shamy. Even though I relate to Sheldon more I think she's still my favorite character. There are also people that hate Sheldon and would disagree with you that he made the show what it is and get annoyed when it becomes "The Sheldon Show". I disagree with them, but hey. To each their own.

There are also plenty of people who don't like what Amy, or this relationship with Amy, has done to Sheldon. I'm not a Shamy shipper or hater, but I hope that on a discussion board there is room for all opinions. The writers have definitely given Amy some odd things to do and say. During the slumber party, when she followed Penny into the bedroom to experiment with lesbianism, it was creepy. It was also inconsistent with telling Penny when they met in the restaurant not to touch her breast. Stupid lines meant for laughs. Like Sheldon, she doesn't know any better. Unlike Sheldon, she seems to be a fast learner.
vasu Posted March 7, 2013 Posted March 7, 2013 Like Sheldon, she doesn't know any better. Unlike Sheldon, she seems to be a fast learner. I agree... And the fact that she is so desperate to be loved and accepted by a group of people IMO is one of the major contrasts between how Sheldon and Amy are portrayed in this show.... Sheldon thinks his isolation is his superiority where as Amy clearly knows the genuine sadness loneliness can bring... .. I also agree that the writers have made her do some very creepy things...the entire crush thing on Penny was just too weird .... there was no explanation of why she was crushing on her...neither was any explanation given on how her crush disappeared... But her character who initially was more often or not super strong has been recently reduced to mostly a sympathetic character....
