I was just thinking about a post relating to Jim and wondering if I should start a new thread or which thread it might go under--and lo, here it is. :)

I was thinking about an article I ran across the other day that was about Texan accents and how the "traditional" Texan way of talking was kind of disappearing as urbanization and the influence of other accents through the media began to affect how Texans speak.

It's always fun to hear Jim slip into his Texan accent as Sheldon ("Let's hop in the back of mah pick-up and go skinny dippin' down at the crick, 'cause today's the day to stop making sense!") but I'm always trying to pick out little Texan flavors in his regular speech, both at Sheldon and when he does interviews, etc.

One thing I've found kind of funny is the way he says words with an "oo" sound and I wondered where it came from--like in that one ep where he has to pee, but Priya is in the shower with Leonard, so he goes over to Penny's and at the door he's desperately saying, "Move! Move! Move!".  He almost says something like mew-ve, because his "oo" is so "tight" for lack of a better word.  I've noticed that a lot with his "oo" sounds.

Well, it turns out that that very thing was adressed in this article.  Apparently it's some sort of newer trend in the way some Texans talk.  I'm going to dig around and see if I can find the article again.  It was pretty interesting.

To me, anyway. :)

Ah, this thread was needed.

He's my screen muse. So proud to be a fan of someone not only exceptionally talented and charming but also, from all accounts, a genuinely lovely person.

Phanta - I noticed that too. Also, there's something about the way he roles his 'l'. Is that also a Texas thing, or is it a slight lisp? It's adorable either way.

He does have a bit of a lisp--like he puts his tongue right up behind his teeth when he says his "s" sounds--like Bazinga, for instance.  It's really noticable in the Electric Can-Opener when they're in the cafeteria and he says he's sitting alone because he is without "friends".

I don't know about is "L", though--can you give me an example?

I noticed that in Isolation Permutation, when Amy calls from the liquor store, it almost sounds like he's saying "Aye-my", like he really widens out the A in her name--a little Texan-y. :)

Bring it over here! :)

Okay, because you asked... :)

Ode to a Pea

Oh, Jimmy Joe

I'd like to know,

May I caress your roundy head?

I think I'd probably drop dead

If you would give me leave

I love your teeth

Your ears, your fingers

Upon your eyes I must needs linger

You roll your tongue

My head has sprung

A leak...

The back of your neck...

Oh, what the heck!

I want to touch your body!

Would you think of me as naughty

If I were to violate your personal space and get up close and...

Sorry...

Your thighs are strong

Your legs are long

I love your knobby, gangly knees.

You cannot know how I'd be pleased

If I could just get closer

Oh, Slimmy Jimmy

Oh, Mr. Pea

Your whole package pleases me...

So to speak...

I can't think of a specific example right now (too sleepy), I seem to notice a slight roll of his tongue every time there's an 'l' in a word. Agree with your other examples too.

Most of all, it kills me when I imagine Jim reading your priceless poem. :)

Hey phantagrae I have something for you. This is my poem about Jim, but please be gentle because it's hard to translate poetry on english, and convey well meaning.

Ode to your eyes

I’m a slave of your eyes.

These eyes  have enchained my soul and have stolen my heart.

The most innocent beauty wich fettered my dreams.

Heaven is rejoicing of their azure,

and the moon is hiding behind the clouds because of the envy,

when your look is brightening up darkness of night.

Your eyes put a spell on me,

and when its blue light touch me

your eyelashes will catch me in an amorous embrace,

and every part of me will become an oath of passionate feelings .

Thank you very much. I really appreciated this, because it wasn't easy, and I'm not talking about translate, I'm talking about the decision to put this here. :icon_redface::blush:  You never know how people will react. So thanks.

That sounds like an interesting article. I'd like to read it. :)
