Andy_90's_generation Posted March 12, 2015 Posted March 12, 2015 I've read a couple of reviews online and they make me a little sad...I think the general impression is that they don't think Home will make that much money and isn't as good as something like How To Train Your Dragon or Kung Fu Panda. One prediction said they thought it would tank as they didn't expect it to make back what it cost to produce it. One review even called Jim's performance "grating"! But I think that some industry reviews are bound to be more cynical than the reactions of normal people, especially people with kids. One thing I read said that though it may not be as profound or stunning as some of those other movies, that kids will like it and may easily pick up on certain lines or phrases. I'm waiting to see the reviews when it really comes out, though, and opens to general people. All I know is, I'm going to be standing in line on opening day. I don't have anything going on that Friday, so I'm going to see it as soon as I get off work! Opening weekend box office is really important. Do you guys think Jim pays attention to the reviews, and if they are not so good it makes him sad? I mean, i don't know how important for an actor is the eye of the critics, he has already done his job, the rest is responsibility of the studio, IMO. I remember in that wonderful interview for SAG foundation one of the questions of the audience was what does he says to himself when he has done a "bad job", and he responded something like acting was so precious and intimate to him, he would accept he did it wrong but wouldn't stop to think too much into that, like he would kinda shrug it off. I don't have anything going on that Friday, so I'm going to see it as soon as I get off work! Opening weekend box office is really important. Oh, and speaking of Home, I had an email from my boss asking me to come up with an icebreaker activity for our team meeting next week and I was wracking my brain. But then I remembered those little questions that Jim and Rhiana were asking each other--what would you take to a new planet, what would the rules be, etc. So I made up a quick little 4 question thing for our people to do. I called it "New Planet" and I don't know whether or not I'll say how I came up with it... I would not be too worried. For the past couple of years, animated films (at least in the U.S.) have been outgrossing all of the predictions made for them on a routine basis. In fact, the pattern is that the animated film comes out, makes double what it was expected to make and the other films competing with it are eclipsed by them. Unfortunately, the press then blames the other movie and the other actors for their "failure" rather than ever stating the obvious-that they were simply beaten by the animated film because movie-going patterns have changed. Normally this makes me sad but I am rooting so hard for Jim that I am hoping the trend will hold for this one.
phantagrae Posted March 12, 2015 Posted March 12, 2015 And the thing about animated movies is that they can have legs--if they don't necessarily make as big a splash at the box office as hoped, oftentimes they can continue to earn money once they go to DVD. If a family has a pack of kids, they may not want to take them all to the theater, or if their kids are on the younger side. So they can end up just waiting until the DVD comes out. I think that's probably more true for animated movies than for regular movies. At any rate, it seems like a totally charming film to me, so I can see it still doing well, despite what the jaded critics think. Whether or not it's "up there" with the highest grossing films is less important than whether or not families enjoy it.
kerrycec03 Posted March 12, 2015 Posted March 12, 2015 whether its a hit or not....I'm excited....BUT I will say as a mother of a 6 and 3 year old, my kids probably wouldn't be interested in it if it wasn't for me amping it up. I will be taking my 6 year old with me to see it and his words are "you only want to go because Sheldon is the voice"...and he is correct in that. I don't think the promos have really been geared for younger kids to want to see it. For instance my boys were DYING to see the SpongeBob movie. By no means did that have the heart that Home will, but that movie was very heavily promoted on the children's channels, which I can tell you Home is not. Also, Home is probably gearing for kids slightly older than mine. It kinda stinks that obviously Disney Channel products will promote their movies just like Nick will do the same.... JMO. I don't know whether or not he reads them or pays much attention, but I imagine that if a review singles him out personally that's gotta sting a little. No one likes to have negative things said about them. He strikes me as being pretty well-balanced, though. He's been in the business, either onstage or TV, etc., for ages now and I think he's probably seen his share of negative comments. But he doesn't seem to see his job as having to please critics, but rather to do justice to the role as he sees it and as far as he has control over it. I think that he's a thoughtful, well-prepared worker who doesn't take his work lightly and I think that if he likes a role--especially now when he can pretty much pick and choose--then he's found something in it that he feels he can do well. And in the end, you can't please everyone--especially not critics and especially not in this snarky day and age--and he seems to just take things in stride and always do his best. Stewie99 Posted March 13, 2015 Posted March 13, 2015 UK newspaper The Daily Express runs a feature on Friday where they review all upcoming releases. It will be interesting to see what they make of it as that could massively influence whether their substantial readership (500,000) see the film. I called it "New Planet" and I don't know whether or not I'll say how I came up with it... You will love it. It is adorable. Some reviewers feel they have to tear up everything or they are not doing their job. I am worried that Home is releasing a bit too close to Cinderella who is targeting the same audience. Both are beautiful and colorful and we know Disney...they market the heck out of everything, although DWA has done a great job of marketing Home so far. I will admit that Home was costly to make and that may be an issue for them. In the film industry if you spend $100M on something you have to make at least $300M to break even. I am hoping all Big Bang fans show up the first week of it being released in droves to see Home and that it does well. Even though I saw it already, I would like to go back, but perhaps to a late night showing with less kids. LOL!

stardustmelody Posted March 13, 2015 Posted March 13, 2015 (edited) It will premiere there on the 17th. It has to be in a theater that can play 3D but they haven't said which theater yet. Are there many 3D theaters in that area? My guess is it might be at one of the Cinemsrks or IMAX theaters there. phantagrae Posted March 13, 2015 Posted March 13, 2015 I'm guessing Jim will probably be able to be there--and it's nice that it's in his home state. Jim's a busy little beaver these days! So... Fallon on the 16th Premiere in Plano on the 17th Ellen on the 20th Taping on the 24th US Home premiere on the 27th Plus whatever radio/print interviews he did in the UK that will surface next weekend, and whatever other promo stuff he might do for HOME before the 27th. He may do more print or radio stuff here. I submitted a question for the snapchat thing, but it didn't get chosen. Still, he and Rhianna were very cute answering the various questions.
