Pretty much wonderful...A sample of the reviews: AMNY - Parsons, in a superb performance that tracks the self-deprecating character’s heightened vulnerability and recklessness Broadway News - Parsons presides over the festivities with consummate skill, neatly delineating Michael’s growing anxiety and its grim consequences. Deadline - Judging from the reviewed performance, I can’t disagree. And the likability of the cast – Mantello didn’t specify Parsons, but I will – plays out in other ways. The gut-punch when TV’s beloved Sheldon Cooper spits out the N-word isn’t softened, it’s made lethal. Hollywood Reporter - Parsons walks a tricky line with great assurance from playful Southern charm and cashmere-clad piss-elegance through neurotic agitation to barely contained rage, NY Magazine - Parsons gives an inexhaustible, zingy performance as Michael, full of roiling nastiness and sadness (and on a recovering foot, too). Variety - in Jim Parsons’ endearing performance as the heart and soul of the play’s rambunctious birthday gathering.

smellypooper73 Posted June 4, 2018 Posted June 4, 2018 Nearly every tweet I've seen from average folks who watched "A Kid Like Jake" has been positive, yet it has annoyingly low scores on all three major review sites (Rotten Tomatoes, IMDb, and Metacritic).Sent from my SM-G960U using Tapatalk

Sent from my SM-G960U using Tapatalk when it comes to make a critic on something, specific views on the topic at hand always play a part. And usually those who disagree are the ones who take to this sites to make their opinion. Take the NYT critic on TBITB for example, everybody else liked it, but this guy hated it... you start to wonder, well... what's wrong with this guy, right? All the LGBTA+ sites loved the movie, yet, other sites maybe didn't appreciated it that much... well... why must that be, i wonder. Ultimatelly, I think the movie team knows they did an excelent job regardless. Because, they did. No doubt about it.

Metacritic is based on audience reaction and not that many people have actually seen it yet. On Rotten Tomatoes it actually has a "Fresh" score of 69% with 18 positive reviews out of 26 total. I think for a little indy film, it's doing fine.

Just wondering what the MPAA rating is for A Kid Like Jake is because I know it’s about a touchy subject matter...I still want to see Jim in it so bad.:( I want to see him in that “dad” type role. It will be interesting to see!:) I know they said it will be released in select theaters June 1st but what about digitally(specifically iTunes)? I know when Octavia Spencer was on Live with Kelly and Ryan, they mentioned a digital release. I didn’t see it when I searched it on iTunes. I guess there’s no preorder for it.:( At this point, it appears to be unrated. The only place I’ve seen it as available is Vudu. PatsyR Posted June 9, 2018 Posted June 9, 2018 I rented the video of A KID LIKE JAKE yesterday and agree that Jim's performance is amazing (along with Claire Dane's). Since watching it, I have been pondering why the ratings have been a bit low. My theory is that as it was originally a play where probably the "Jake" character never appeared on stage due to his age, that when it was rewritten for film, they simply added some visuals with a young boy but never really expanded his role. I felt at the end that I wanted to have seen more and found out more about "Jake" as he was the title character. I would have loved some scenes with dialogue between Jake and his mother and between Jake and his father. I understand how difficult something like that would be to do on stage, but it seems that a clever film maker could possibly improvise such scenes, and I'm sure Jim and Claire would be able to elicit believable performances from the very young actor without "scarring" him. Just my thoughts. Even so, it's a lovely movie and no matter what your position is on the issues involved, it is very moving and thought-provoking.
