I still don't see how or what he is doing to be a jerk and Amy is nothing like a surrogate mum, if people are going to talk about that then they need to question the reasons Howard married Bernadette when she treats him more like a child than a husband. Sheldon Is dealing with his feelings towards Amy in a way that he is comfortable with.

The start of this discussion on the recent actions of Sheldon exemplified by this episode centers on his relationship with everyone around him now, not just Amy. Sheldon has treated all the female characters with a disrespect that borders on misogyny. Reading back through this threads you will see the list of examples given this year alone that is disturbing hard core Sheldon fans. This episode and the one where he gets called in to HR about this behavior give the most glaring points. The fact that the writers had him brought up on charges and then have him offend the female HR head indicate that this is purposely being emphasized.

You are right that the writers have him dealing with Amy in a way that he is comfortable with. That way seems to bother the other characters on the show and some of us fans as well.

Its nice to see that Sheldon's real character is finally being discussed.

I've noticed him changing from being a socially inept science nerd to a real jerk over the past few seasons, but very few people seem to see it.

His attitude towards women is disgusting, his attitude towards his friends is disgusting, his attitude towards Amy is disgusting (I don't care much about this as I really don't like her character).

Of course, they have also been working hard to ruin the other characters as well, but what they have done to Sheldon is astonishing.

Ruin is subjective, but the show is not that what it was. It's different.

I think Sheldon is committed to his relationship with Amy, but more as an intellectual companion and surrogate mom. I believe part of the attraction of the Sheldon character is that he is a large child. He's been coddled all his life, but for some reason never evolved past being a pre-adolescent. Amy as surrogate mom works, but don't touch me because you have cooties (germophobe, or eight-year old?), except when I'm sad and I need a hug. Fix my ouchies and boo boos, but don't expect me to kiss you. He acted more grownup when Penny inadvertantly got him drunk on Long Island Ice Teas. This behavior was part of the character from the start. What's going on with the character now is hard to figure, unless he's actually growing up and getting some hormones. He's acting like a snotty twelve year old, but in a responsible adult world. Part of the whole nerd thing is that nerds mature out of sync. Their emotional-social development progresses much more slowly than their intellectual-maturity development. Sheldon can be thought of as an extreme example, amplified by the fact that he is so smart people would put up with almost anything because of it. Since he's a theoretician, no one really has to work with him, so he could have his way at work too.

I wonder if they are suggesting the character wants to change (he has a girlfriend that wants sex, what's the problem? Usually getting to that point IS the problem), but is afraid of change. He has stated repeatedly he doesn't like change, but could it be he doesn't want to admit that things need to change? That means that things aren't perfect now, e.g. wrong in some respects. He's having trouble coping (the hacky sack time), he admits it is possible he would have sex with Amy at some point in the future, but can't right now since he has trouble dealing with things that involve touch (a clear sign of definite mental problems). We have a character primed for a change in direction. Right now he's become such a jerk that he will be ostracized by the group. Remember, the omly reason Sheldon was tolerated in the first place is that they like Leonard enough to put up with him.

Wonderfully said.

It seems that the writers have Sheldon in crisis because he wants to be an adult but can't figure out how to do it. It probably parallels the dilemma that the writers are in.

Thank you for responding to rachygd's post. I wasn't quite sure what to say. I ventured over to the Shamy thread, and realized that things are seen over there quite a bit differently than I view the show. They are entitled to that view, as I am mine. I was disturbed to see that one opinion expressed by several posters was that comments discussed in this thread should be edited out by the moderators. I have seen opinions I've agreed with, or disagreed with, but nothing that I thought was outside of the general tone, range and politeness of the discussion. Am I missing something?

I think all the characters have a place in the worldview of the show. I think it would be interesting to see how a plot device that was used on Leonard and Penny, and Howard and Bernadette would work on Sheldon and Amy. Nothing more.

All the characters have good and bad points. My favorite characters, Leonard and Penny, have disappointed me many times, as has my third favorite character, Sheldon. They've also entertained me almost every week they've been on, from the beginning. I have been a hard core fan since the beginning, but only recently come to the forum. I don't want to offend anybody, or get into any flame wars.

Moving the discussion forward, it will be interesting to see if the writers have the group hang out without Sheldon again. I remember in "The Toast Derivation" they did come to the point where they missed him. I particularly liked the reference to Beetlejuice.

I think we all have our own opinions on the characters and their good and not so good traits and we are never all going to agree or get the other to see our point of view and that's OK because the world would be a boring place if we all agreed on the same thing. But there is too many threads slating certain characters and people trying to undermine others for being hardcore shippers and others complaining about characters changing completely and wanting things to go back to seasons 1-3 which is never gonna happen
