Episodes 6.22 The Proton Resurgence (May 2)

Thank you @phantagrae for capsulizing this old forum debate with a basic truth. There has been no real shift to the show being a rom-com from its "geeky" origin. The title of the show is a clever double meaning giving the central premise.

 

Those who argue that it has changed radically sometimes forget that the Leonard quest for Penny was part of central premise of TBBT. That premise, as seen in the pilot, was the tug of war between the nerd / geek world and the so called normal life. The "rope" was personified by Leonard and the "tuggers" were Penny on one side and Sheldon on the other. All the producers have done is clone this struggle from Leonard and Penny, to Howard and Bernadette, to Sheldon and Amy, to Raj and possibly, Lucy.

 

The basic premise has not changed at all.

So we've gone from Leonard/Penny to  ALL the characters being in romantic relationships. Yet you insist it hasn't shifted to a rom-com? OK.

Sorry to barge in like this (as I've said previously in post (#108) I was myself out with the thread...beside I didn't even manage to watch this TBBT episode)

I feel not to be part of any clear cut group as such, infact I like to join whenever I feel I want to speak my mind anywhere.

The argument about children it's a matter of likes or dislikes.

If they dislike children maybe a bit odd but I do not judge anyone on that basis (Maybe there is a delicate matter or personal reason that can't be explained here)

Full stop.

Moon, I didn't say practiced. Relatively effective contraception wasn't widely available nor widely used until the late 1800s( that's why I gave the England example). That's when modern(well post Industrial Age) methods made it possible to produce enough (mostly condoms)to make it an option. Much knowledge has ways been lost when modern methods and standards are applied. The reaction of religion, in the late 1800s, was mostly a reaction to contraception being more widely available

 

 

Moonbase is correct and you're just plain wrong Tensor, I suggest you read  John Riddle's "Eve's Herbs: A history of contraception and abortion in the west " Harvard University Press.  From Ancient Egypt until the 15th Century women had extensive and reliable herbal pharmacopoeia. As Moonbase said; it's religion that tried to stamp out this knowledge via the witchcraft burnings.

I didn't say it wasn't working. The show was still great. But I think they were running out of fresh material so they decided to boldly go where everyone has already been. Thanks for acknowledging that the relationship developments now outweigh the geek/science-focused stories. That's been my whole complaint about the show. And I know that's a minority opinion.

 

Ah yes, I can just see the future: episodes where pregnant Bernadette has cravings & Howard has to go out in the middle of the night to get her pickles and ice cream, and then she's stuck in an elevator giving birth with Sheldon who has to help. Har, har.

Because they needed an actor, maybe. Dr Smoot did a great job but he wasn't convincing. Acting is a skill. But I want Dr Brian May from Queen to do a gig at the Cheesecake Factory. He'd have to do it for love cos I'm sure they don't have enough money.

Lissie, I don't know why you felt that my post was directed at you specifically. I came into this thread 5 pages down and I can't even exactly remember who said what. It just feels sad to me that EVERY thread becomes a debate between 'show is still doing great' and 'show is becoming a romcom and the writers are lazy' - especially when it's a thread about an episode in which 'relationship issues' weren't even a focus, by any stretch.

 

I very much doubt whether H/B's offhand comments in this episode mean that they're going the kids way any time soon. If they do, I'll share your concerns, but not till then. Please remember that even Sheldon and Amy were talking about test-tube babies in early season 4!

This does not belong in this thread but read my comment about the central PREMISE of TBBT and the meaning of the title of the show.

What is the focus of an episode doesn´t matter me, If  something disgust me about a specific episode I think the place for saying it is the threat about that episode. Even if others spend their time writing long speechs about "the principal part" of that episode but, I think we all have the right to say what we feel in that episode and not to follow others speechs and nothing more. Some of us will feel something different and we have the right to express ourselves. If that disturb others, bad luck for them. We don´t need another place for saying the things that "bore them" Sometimes I feel boring too with some topics they are writing in their post. But I never insult/shout/stop them for that. If I am not interested then I don´t read/reply and nothing more. Everybody has the right to say what they want.

Someone said we are the minority. I don´t know if we are the minority or dissenters. I am sure all of us love TBBT otherwise we will stop to watch it and post here. If we are here is because we too are fan of this show. This is our site too.

 

And I am not telling only you specificaly. I am saying this to everybody. I never saw you Pomita being agressive with others. I am sure you are a kind person. But some here are not.

Actually, Annie, as is your's and Moonbase's answers, mine is also incomplete. Remember, I'm not saying there wasn't any, it was just not widely available. I'll be more than happy to provide references for the economic and secular forces, in addition to medicinal factors, that prevented the widespread use of contraception, but it's a bit OT for the thread. Would you want to move this to chit chat or PM?

Again, no problem with your expressing your feelings about a particular plot point in the episode. My crib was with the direction the conversation invariably takes after that, with the same arguments being repeated by the same people on the same issue every time. (including those who I agree with!)

 

Also, when I say that I don't see a big risk of H/B going the family way yet, only from their comments in this episode, I'm not saying your feelings aren't valid. I'm just trying to reassure you. For the record, I really appreciate when someone does that to me (tries to convince me that my fears/concerns are unfounded, about something).

 

And for anyone who thinks that the Shamy thread is all about 'OMG everything is perfect', they've obviously never been there. On the contrary, I don't think I've seen that amount of in-depth and diverse arguing anywhere else. What makes it seem okay for me is that at least there are different and specific issues being argued about.

Nice, presuming that it was a "personal attack" based on someone else's opinion.

For me, people in the 'Neverland' of this forum are those who think that characters shouldn't "grow up" if that means they're no longer funny in their opinion.

As Pomita said, anyone who has read posts in the Shamy thread (or any couple thread for that matter) knows that there is almost as much disagreement in those group as in the US congress.

But it looks like some people pull opinions out of air. Anything works when it comes to making others look like non-thinking drones, right?

Maybe this problem is coming again and again in the same way because some here don´t allow others to say what they want to say and they stop them in a very aggresive way. In this way, the people who is stopped to express themselves has that feeling stuck in their throat...who knows? Maybe that people only want to discuss something bore them? I like, as you,  when someone try to reassure me. I appreciate that! But dear, I must remember you that this situation didn´t start with you. I only answered you because YOU asked me. Only one thing I would like to tell you: please read first carefully the post you will "like this" otherwise you can involve yourself in a bad situation caused for others and not you. If you click a "like this" in a post were  someone is being rude with someone else then you too are part of this

Sorry for this my advice, I know that probably I am crossing a line I don´t have the right to cross, but I am saying this because I can see you are concern about all this. When I told you I am sure you are nice person, I said the truth from my heart.

I've noticed that repetition is perfectly acceptable if you agree with what is being repeated. Otherwise it's condemned.

You know Arthur asked a good question when he asked Leonard what he and penny talked about, the same thing that Sheldon asked back in season 3, if penny wanted to learn more like she did in his lab earlier this season she could always go and watch Leonard and ask questions
